William Tell Sackett is not my favorite of the Sackett fellas. There's something about him that annoys me; maybe it's all the stupid decisions he makes, like wandering through the desert with no water and no exact idea of where water can be found. Why didn't he double back and get behind the crooks following him? It's the little things that make or break a man. I know I definitely wouldn't hire Tell to be my guide through the west.I spent three-quarters of the book wondering where Tell's gal disappeared to, even though I don't like Ange and wasn't put out by not reading about her. I thought I had messed up the chronology of the series but then, near the end of the story, L'Amour explains her absence. It would've been nice to know that information earlier. The biggest appeal (for me) about this story is that one of the antagonists is a female, the first time we've seen L'Amour break the "girls are sugar and spice" ideology (and her involvement is obvious so this isn't a spoiler). And it was a pretty good crime too, if only she'd gotten away with it.We also meet Nolan Sackett in this story and hear about him being an outlaw. What all has ol' Nolan done, to be branded an outlaw? That's a story I'd like to read.
I am glad that some of the Sackett Series focus on Tell Sackett, the oldest of the five boys in Jubal's Family; his sons are William "Tell," Orrin, Tyrel, and two younger brothers are miner characters in the series. No one has told Tell about Orrin's marriage to Laura Pritts, which this too leads big-hearted Tell into a snare much worse than the black-eyed witch woman in this book. He does get to meet one of his cousins, Nolan, who is not a good guy to run into, but keep in mind that Sackett blood runs deeper than creak water!Read and enjoy!
These Sackett novels are classic westerns. Mr. L'Amour had a knack for making you feel like you were right there on the frontier, but he also told a good story. When he was first writing western novels in the 1950s, apparently some older folks who had grown up 70 or 80 years earlier in the final days of the frontier told him he captured the feel of those times perfectly. I myself am a western writer (you can find my books on Amazon), and I find Mr. L'Amour set the bar really high. I hope to done day be able to approach his level of excellence.
When you read all his GREAT books you are taken in by the detailed descriptions and you can let your imagination put you into the situations and live it. It is a perfect escape from your reality and takes you along with the Sacketts. I would also recommend one of his last books the last of the Breed. I am only sorry that he didn't live long enough to write what would have been a logical and great sequel.
This is another in the series of Louis L'Amour novels about the Sackett family. The Sackett story starts in England, moves to the high seas, and then winds up in the West where this novel is cast. All of these stories contain undercurrents of wonderful American values, strong family ties, rugged individualism, strength of character, heroism, and even humor. And, they are a snapshot into the history of the West and into America itself.I collect all of the novels by Louis L'Amour. They are excellent to read, and many I have re-read 2-3 times. I wholeheartedly recommend them to everyone.
It's especially nice if you can read them in order but once you have, you can read them anyway you find them. I really like the bits of real history included in the stories. And also the survival tips that you'll find in many of his stories that could save your life even today. Especially if you are a hunter or camper or just enjoy hiking in wild lonely wilderness areas. But even if you aren't an outdoor person, you'll enjoy his stories.
Loved all four of these books. Louis L'Amour captures the west wonderfully in these four short novels, of course adding glamour and romance where it probably didn't exist in reality, but that just makes the story all the more interesting. I love to find the differences between a book and a movie, what they leave out, what they choose to leave in and what they just make up to fill minutes in a feature film. I highly recommend reading these novels.
Louis L'Amour is always a predictably, excellent writer, clearly encapsulating the times of the frontier development of America. I recommend him to ANYBODY. Presidents Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan also enjoyed this author. Love to read anything by Louis L'Amour!!
