Fun book of facts for younger baseball fans. My 6 year old grandson had no trouble reading it. He enjoyed finding out the Cleveland Spiders were the worst big league team ever.

My 8 year old grandson hasn’t been able to put this down... He loves all the facts and is learning a lot about teams, stats and players..He says it’s his favorite book

I'll admit, I don't usually like reading self-help books. They just aren't my thing. (Could this mean I'm stubborn and don't like people telling me what to do? ha!) However, I wanted to read this book, because I am familiar with the author, and I think she's an engaging writer. I do love biographies and memoirs, and this book has enough of Rachel's personal story to be interesting and engaging, even for a self-help book. :)The Brave Art of Motherhood presents a lot of ideas for getting "unstuck." Rachel uses her own stories to illustrate her ideas and to motivate and inspire the reader to move past the places where they feel stuck in life. It really does feel like a message from a motivational speaker, and if you feel stuck in life as Rachel did, you'll likely get excited at the opportunity to move past those places in your own life. It's a lot of "pull up your bootstraps and just do it" instruction, but in an empowering sort of way. While I haven’t personally dealt with some of the situations Rachel struggled to escape, still, I could see how her instruction could be applied to many areas of life.Rachel has come through a lot of difficult things, and my heart was touched on many occasions while I read. This book seems like an offering written out of compassion and understanding.Some other reviewers have mentioned their disappointment in a lack of faith-based encouragement and instruction, since Rachel is a Christian and the publisher sells Christian material. It is true, this book does not mention God's working as much as it does perseverance and personal striving, but it seemed to be a deliberate choice by the author. She made it clear that she was a Christian, but perhaps, she was hoping that writing in this format would allow women who don't share her faith to benefit from the instruction.This book was written and put together well, and I believe it will empower women to make those changes necessary to bring deliverance from unnecessary trials, stresses, burdens and other seemingly impossible situations.

With families living further and further apart and the increasing numbers of single moms (myself included), motherhood can feel very lonely. Compound that with the importance of our role as mothers and the never ending work load and you get some very exhausted and even depressed mothers. We all seem to think we're alone in this, but Rachel writes so honestly from the trenches herself! Her words have been a life-line for me and keep pointing me toward the joy of motherhood!

From the opening pages you see that the author has a big heart and love for all mothers who are struggling to just get through each day, who think they're alone, who think that they don't matter. Because of this great love, she opens up and shares the deepest, darkest times of her life to show others that no, they're not alone! She hit rock bottom multiple times, she got knocked down multiple times but "she stood back up, over and over." She'd spent so much of her life trying to be the person she thought she was supposed to be. She hid so many parts of her life because she didn't think she'd be accepted by others. She hit one of the rock bottoms and couldn't hide the truth any more. What happened? Those around her not only supported her but all of them had truths of their own that they were hiding from others! The flood gates opened! That's where the seed for this book was planted. As her journey continued there were people in her life who helped her get through the hardest of times. They helped her in different parts of her life and it helped her see a wider picture. This book brings all the pieces together to form that wider picture. In Part 1 she lays out all the things in her life that were preventing her from changing. The things she was doing to get through each day were the very things that were preventing her from breaking free. Part 2 she "Exposes Excuses." Every reader will be able to see themselves not only in areas from Part 1 that are preventing them from changing, but especially in Part 2 with all the excuses. She covers three sections in detail. Each one is very eye opening and so many wouldn't think they are excuses at all and can't see how each of them is hurting any real change! Part 3 is "Building a New Reality." She gives real steps that anyone can do! There are simple steps that build on each other. And she offers such encouragement every step of the way! She knows what it feels like to go through all this. She knows what it's like to be at the bottom and to slowly, step by step, inch by inch, crawl her way out. At the beginning of the book she spoke of herself as a mother of seven kids with the IRS coming after her and $15 to her name. The blurb at the end about the author describes her as going from poverty to "being named one of Inc. magazine's top eighteen up-and-coming women entrepreneurs. Maybe you don't have that dream, but you do have a dream. It can be a small dream, but it's YOUR dream. Or it can be a big, knock your socks off kind of dream. I was given this book as a gift from my mentor during my first year of teaching high school, and haven't stopped using it since. I teach 8th grade at the moment, and this can easily be modified and used in middle and high school as well as college. It is the definitive text for argumentative writing. It has a collection of sentence stems/starters'templates for every circumstance (e.g. agreeing with a rebuttal) as well as a section devoted to transitions, verbs for making a claim, etc. It takes much of the guesswork out of writing an argumentative essay. We know that writing at the college level is expository or argumentative. This is the one book you need to get in order to write well. That's what I SAY. And that's what THEY SAY.

I have always thought of writing as a form of unilateral communication lacking any sort of feedback mechanism. Looking at writing as some form of conversation, as Graff and Birkenstein point out in “They Say, I Say”, was therefore different yet refreshing in many respects.For some, academic writing can be no different than a “foreign language” and in that regard, the structure and templates provided in the book serve to significantly reduce the learning curve associated with academic writing. As for the criticism on whether templates serve to stifle creativity, I would argue that some forms of writing require more structure compared to others, which is why templates tend to serve well for such forms.I thoroughly enjoyed reading through the book and can definitely foresee the need of referring back to it over and over again.

This is a great book to help teach students how to frame arguments. This is my third copy. I lost one loaning it out at work (I'm an educator), another I gave to my younger brother when he went away to college. I bought it again to use with Kelly Gallagher's "Staying true to what works in the ELA classroom".The sentence frames really are the most useful aspects of this book. I have to teach argumentative writing and the frames help me to model good writing to my students. It's a great tool to have on hand. Short and sweet.

Hard to argue with the other reviewer here. The book is usefully divided into chapters by branch of service (after introductory comments in general on the uniforms). The branch of service info is all footnoted with reference to German regulations, and discusses waffenfarben, shoulder strap devices, "elite unit" insignia where it deviated from the norm, dates of issue when insignia details changed, collar tabs, cuff titles, and other misc. insignia associated with each branch. Jam packed with this information, the text is fully supported primarily by rare and unpublished wartime photographs. A colour photo section is included; the photos are a bit murky and the section is not greatly organized, but is a nice addition. There are also useful appendices and annexes giving a survey of numbered regiments of the various branches. All major branches that wore the AFV uniform (both field grey and black, as well as denim summer variants, all of which are discussed and illustrated in this book) are covered, and even the Propaganda Companies, with several rare photos of the AFV uniforms in use by an Armoured Propaganda Company. Most complete resource out there - be advised only Army formations are covered, no SS or Luftwaffe coverage - as the title very well states!

This is Volume 1 of 2. These songs are a must for anyone who wishes to better understand the musical and cultural history of the United States. These songs used to be taught in public school, but that is no longer the case. Make certain your family knows these songs! A very well written collection!

I had to buy this for my vocal class as part of my music ed degree, it's still pretty useful after graduation. Though these are simple songs, they're ones you can bust out at a party or a retirement home and everybody could sing along.Little kids love these songs as well, and since most are part of the American culture, they're important to learn from a young age. You might even surprise yourself and go down memory lane while looking through it!

Cool book, lots of Americana songs complete with lyrics and chords. I didn't realize that this one is pocket book sized, they do sell a full size version.

This is a nice supplement to the original book. All very singable songs. I like this collection.

Nausicaa of the Valley of the wind is one of my favorite movies. After seeing for the first time I was amazed that I hadn't seen it sooner. It had everything I like in a movie, a good premise, deep and emotional characters, amazing art work, a deep meaning, and an awesome soundtrack to boot. So when I heard that there was more to the story I went out and bought this book to see if it was as good as the movie. After waiting about a month for it to come in, I bought it on Amazon, I finally got it. I was not disappointed. Let's break this book down into categories.Art Work. The drawing pretty much, how do they look and how much detail is put into them. Miyazaki, I have to say, is a master in his field. All his drawings are extremely detailed and you can really get a sense of the surroundings. The characters emotions are brought out almost perfectly, especially the Nausicaa herself, who is shown as a powerful, yet fragile girl. Overall the drawings are almost perfect and I don't think anybody would disagree with that.Characters. I was already familiar with all the characters in this book, having seen the movie already. They are pretty much the same here as they are in the movie so if you've seen it, which I'm taking for granted you have, and then isn't much knew. They mostly do the same things as they did in the movie and feel the same emotions with a few fun differences, but nothing really is too different.Story. This book follows the movie almost exactly up to the point where Nausicaa and Asbel discover the underground system under the sea of corruption, or toxic jungle as it is called in the movie. There is one big difference that I must share, the Valley of the Wind is really an alley of Torumekia, and Nausicaa goes out to fight under Kushana agents the Doroke principalities, a nation not even mentioned in the movie. Other than that it follows the same story almost to the letter.Overall a very good and strong opening to the series. This entry doesn't really add a whole lot to the overall story if you've already seen the movie, but there are some important differences which mean you can't simply skip over it if you want to read the series.

You might be familiar with Hayao Miyazaki from many of the animated movies he has produced. Some of the most popular are Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Howl's Moving Castle or even Laputa: Castle in the Sky. These are wonderful productions and some of my favorite stories. Miyazaki has a talent at drawing you emotionally into his world and to enchant you with a world so completely different from our own, yet so beautiful. Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, his seven volume graphic novel series is no exception.There is something awesome about graphic novels, and that is that the author is able to show you exactly what is in or her mind. Like with a movie, you don't need to use your imagination but are able to drown yourself completely into the story. If you've never read a graphic novel before, I recommend that you do at least once. Choose a good one and see what you think. I'll guaranty that there's nothing quite like it.Nausicaa is one of those action packed stories that starts you off in a world and plot that is already very interesting, but that leads you into something that you could have never imagined. By the time you get to the end, you want to start over just to connect the dots. The characters are completely unique and Nausicaa herself, the main figure, is somebody to fall in love with. The people all around her adore her and you can't but help to feel the same way. I sometimes get annoyed with the humble, perfect do-gooder in the books that I read, but she is a gem. I wish all the authors out there were able to get me attached to a character the way Miyazaki offers us Nausicaa...I would cry at the end of every book that I finished.There is a distinct push toward 'saving the planet' in this story as well as - amazingly - some christian undertones. Not very Japanese if you ask me, but the mood and the symbolism are beautifully mastered and honestly, I got to the end of the last volume thinking that "Yes, I do want to live my life better, treating people and the world I live in with more respect." And that's the point here. It's not forceful in any way or overwhelming, but it's there and it demands the readers consideration. The question that Miyazaki poses to his audience - and you'll see this in all of his stories, in some form or another - is "What can you do to be a better person?"I don't know about you but I hate being told what I need to do. It's the universal source of annoyance and revolt to all people, I believe. It hurts my pride and tells me that I'm not doing things right or that I need to do things different. Sometimes it's called for but sometimes it's not and that depends on the situation. But it's hard for me to read something or watch or listen to something that is telling me I've got everything wrong and that I need to change my ways. It makes me feel like I'm being treated like a seven year old and am trying to learn math all over again...it's insulting. But pose a question, "What do you think about this..?" or "How would things be if..?" Ah! Now there's a different story.The way to change is for a person to feel it for himself, and that is what Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind brings to you. It's the story of a princess in a world that is so very foreign, there are giant bugs, there are manmade monsters, there are flying ships completely unlike any we have seen here, there are evil emperors and righteous warriors...everything you could ask for. And along comes the open-ended moral of the story, "We could probably do a lot better than what we are doing now. How will you choose to do your part?"Good question! Who'd have thought I'd be wondering that after finishing a book full of drawings done by some Japanese guy? I love this series, it's incredible and there's nothing else to say about it. I am fairly late to Nausicaa, having only seen the movie about 10 years ago. I find it a compelling story about what humans do to destroy their environment, even in decline. Anyway, I bought the book on a whim, thinking it would be a recap of the movie. Wrong: this is a much more detailed and different storyline. It answered some things that seemed to be missing from the movie, and creates a much richer world.I definitely like Nausicaa's impressive martial abilities, juxtaposed by her peaceful nature. The airships are almost Victorian science fiction, with lots of technology that can't be replicated anymore. The noble folks rising to meet their oppressors is something we can learn from.A bargain at ~$9 per volume, I am going to collect the whole shooting match. Great stuff.

My kid loves this movie and has loved it from the first day he saw it when he was about 10yrs old they are 16yrs old now..I finally broke down and bought the comics for him and they are amazing..the story goes way beyond the movie and tells a story that you never knew even..a must buy for fans. Worth every dollar for the whole collection.

I just wanted to note that this is volume 7 of 7 of part 1 of 5 of the 27-volume (meaning, this is #7 of 27 total). This is not #7 of the 7 consolidated volumes more commonly found on Amazon. This is a great comic, the greatest ever in my opinion, but I bought this particular item without looking at the number of pages it contained, thinking it was something that it's not! A nice edition though, a fine cover, with the manga itself printed in the original black ink (rather than brown, as in later editions), and then 5 pages of back matter -- a two-page note by Toren Smith, a 2-page ad, and the teaser for the next volume.

A former federal prosecutor, Paul Butler provides legal commentary for MSNBC and NPR and has been featured on 60 Minutes and profiled in the Washington Post. A law professor at Georgetown University, he is the author of Let’s Get Free: A Hip-Hop Theory of Justice, winner of the Harry Chapin Media Award, and Chokehold: Policing Black Men (both from The New Press). He has published numerous op-eds and book reviews, including in the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Boston Globe, and the Los Angeles Times. He lives in Washington, DC.

Paul Butler's "Chokehold: Policing Black Men" is a comprehensive study into the psychology of America's criminal justice (or injustice) system. In "Chokehold" Butler answers critical questions concerning the impact of the American criminal justice system on African American men. He provides well documented support for his conclusion that the system is designed to subjugate African Americans. Given the central role of race in the allocation of societal resources, Butler cogently argues that correcting this system is not merely a matter of clearing up misconceptions through dialogue or adopting modest reforms. Instead, he postulates that the American criminal justice structure must be restructured from the ground up. Butler effectively conveys the point that policing will not change significantly for African Americans until such comprehensive change happens. Until then, African Americans (especially African American men) will remain under a chokehold. I recommend this book.

This is an excellent book. It is essentially written for younger black males but is a useful read for anyone interested in racial/social justice IMO. Mr. Butler covers a number of issues around the criminal (in)justice system as it applies to black men but he also makes clear that black women are also victimized both from the color of their skin and their gender. In spite of being an old white male, I applaud Mr. Butler and other contemporary authors who continue to pull the cover back on the truly appalling situation we have in America regarding racial/social injustice. Given the politics of the day I fear it will get worse before it gets better. I encourage my fellow white people to read with an open mind and step up and speak out.

Chokehold is a great and necessary book to read even though the content is difficult. Anyone who doesn't understand why they kneel, whether appropriate or not, will understand after reading this well-written book. It made me angry, outraged, and very sad. It is a necessary book for anyone who cares about our failing criminal justice system

Outstanding read; an alarming honest assessment of the complicity of the U.S. judicial system, Congress, and law enforcement agencies. A startling take down of the inequalities faced by minorities,the poor, and immigrants legally exacted by the American justice system; an educational revelation. .

I was truly moved by this book. I have NEVER submitted a review for an Amazon our purhase before, this book is a must read for any person that has pondered WHY ???? For the conditions in the urban areas, for anyone that has wondered WHY at this point the condition of black people in america remains mainly unchanged even after having Mr Obama in office. This book clearly explains the Why and the How..

A devastating description of what it's like to be policed while black in the US. I couldn't help wondering whether some of the grander claims were overstated but then considered the evidence presented and found it difficult to dispute.

Imagine what things could potentially be like, or the much-needed changes that could be made if every black person, especially the prominent ones, exercised this sort of courage, ingenuity, and altruism. Props to Mr. Butler, and to this extraordinary Book!

Excellent and thorough anaylsis of an unjust criminal justice system towards/against black men but also take an introspective detailed look into the violent culture among black men. Highly recommended for anyone interested in a honest and forward think solution to the problems facing the criminalization of black men in America.
