Thirteen Senses: A Memoir, by Victor Villasenor

Amazon.com Review

A good story, Victor Villaseñor writes in the opening pages of this sequel to Rain of Gold, can save your life. Consider, he continues in this memorable portrait of Latino family life, the case of his grandparents, who fled from civil-war-torn Mexico to the United States in 1910. As they traveled north, his father told Villaseñor, "Cannons were blasting. People were screaming and dying. The creeks ran red with blood." But Villaseñor's grandmother's stories about "the stars, the moon, the she-fox" kept the children's minds off the terrors around them, guiding them to their new homeland and shaping family history. That history provides the grist for Villaseñor's exuberantly spinning mill, yielding a sprawling narrative shot through with touches of magical realism and homespun philosophy, and tinged occasionally with regret--as when, for instance, Villaseñor's mother confesses, "I miss your father so much ... but I'm the one who could never bring myself to tell him that I loved him." But sorrow is rare and humor plentiful as Villaseñor affectionately recounts his relatives' travails and improbable dreams, some of which, like a grandfather's quest for gold in a hidden Mexican canyon, come true. As he writes, Villaseñor underscores the importance of tradition, faith, forgiveness, and, yes, good stories in making life livable, and this good story will please many readers. --Gregory McNamee

From Publishers Weekly

Fans of Villasenor's admirable family epic, Rain of Gold (Arte Publico, 1991) will be hard-pressed to wade through this massive, workmanlike sequel. The book's humorous opening at the 50th-anniversary renewal of Villasenor's parents' wedding vows, the "bride" refuses to say "obey" as her sister catcalls from the front pew about the groom's unreliability gives way to a series of simplistic feminist diatribes followed by a nasty family squabble. The author then tracks his mother and father, Lupe and Salvador, through the passionate and turbulent first years of their marriage, always shadowed by Salvador's bootlegging and deceit, always redeemed by Lupe's fiery strength, her bottom-line common sense and a hearty helping of sex. Lupe follows Salvador around Mexico on his criminal and other exploits before putting her foot down; the book leaves them at the start of a presumably lawful, relatively calm life in California. Though the author espouses feminist views, his female characters are one-dimensional, axiom-spouting cultural stereotypes: suffering, saintly and bitter. Where the earlier book offered an enjoyable, unreconstructed representation of early 20th-century rural Mexican culture, here that culture has been infected by a feel-good mysticism that even the California setting doesn't excuse. The story meanders through linguistic anachronisms (no man in 1929 would have said "full Latina hips"), mixed metaphors, aimless digressions, countless exclamation marks and warmed-over New Age imagery like "The Father Sun was now gone, and the Mother Moon was coming up, and the Child Earth was cooling." The author's central question about his parents' relationship "Was it love?" brings a neat if superficial unity to the narrative. 8 pages b&w photos not seen by PW. I first discovered Victor Villasenor on the Charlie Rose show shortly after the publication of Rain of Gold. I still have the hardback first-edition version of this book because it was so special. I enjoyed the continuation of the family saga, but missed the mystical magic of the first book. Interesting because Victor attempts to explain the magic of his mother's system of 13 senses in this book, but I preferred it as the mystery. By the way, I'm very open to believing that it really did rain gold in the distant past in that canyon.

When I began reading Thirteen Senses, I was in awe of Victor Villasenor's wonderful family (which he has immortalized in his stories). As the story begins, the family gathers to celebrate the renewing of the marriage vows of Victor's parents, Lupe and Salvador. And, like all families, there is family drama. There are some big surprises for everyone, from the spirited and lovely Lupe. So I was surprised to find that this family is much like my own--human and full of human frailties, and bits of craziness and fun, too.And then the story goes back in time, to the beginning of Lupe and Salvador's marriage: Two young people in love start out in the world of bootlegging-- prior to the Stock Market Crash-- when Southern California was still mostly orange groves and flower fields. Daring bootlegger Salvador and the beautiful, refined Lupe discover the ups and downs of marriage in those very exciting, rocky times.Family is a guide for Salvador and Lupe, in the form of their loving, troublesome, angry, wonderful living family members; and the loving, very alive spiritual beings who are just as real. For, as their little Indian mothers teach them, there will always be the drama of Creation in every marriage. The teachings of their native American ancestors help Lupe and Salvador to find how to make miracles. These miracles will help them survive the dangers that face them--and that indeed, face all of us.

This book continues with the love story of Salvador and Lupe Villasenor and the first three years of their marriage. Where Rain of Gold left off after the marriage ceremony, Thirteen Senses opens with the renewed vows on the day of their 50th anniversary and takes the reader back to the beginning day of the wedding reception. There is so much more to learn from Dona Margarita in this book....life lessons for the newlyweds and the reader. The Spirit and Wisdom of God is on every page along with daily miracles that the reader can experience right along with Lupe, Salvador, Dona Margarita and Dona Guadalupe ! This book is worth reading over and over and over and is better than any movie produced ! I did not want it to end but yet I couldn't put it down !.....just to keep on reliving those wonderful love miracles through Dona Margarita. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED READING !!!

A look at the give and take in marriage., Mexican culture and life California. In the depression era. Characters are well drawn. Theinfluence of the spirit world is part of this book.

Great Stuff.Mr. Villasenor continues the history of his family and that of the San Diego area....where he resides on his ranch.Love it.Go to Old San Diego. Yes, I did see ghost orbs.Have been in many old cities, cemetaries etc...especially Charleston SC. Only appeared to me behind the Casa de Estudillo.Enjoy your read.

Another richly woven book by this author. He is truly one of those men who absolutely loves women and all that they are. Both he and his father know that they are not diminished by recognizing the strength and power that women posses.

An enjoyable read. Cool new perspective of prohibition life!

Not as good as the first. Not even close. Beside the excessive use of words in all caps, parts of the book can be exhausting to read. When the author sticks to telling the story about Salvador and Lupe the book is just as good as rain of gold. However going off track with the conversations his mother has with God, Jesus, Mary, and the devil, mother moon, father sun, takes away from the story of that you want. The water of the story is muddied by too much junk quite frankly

Review

Praise for Thomas Jefferson: The Art of Power “Fascinating and insightful … Many books have been written about Jefferson’s life, but few have created such a vivid portrait … Meacham immerses the reader in that period of history to explain Jefferson’s behavior during an era when the nation was as contradictory as he was … extraordinary … essential.”—The Associated Press“[A]ccomplishes something more impressive than dissecting Jefferson’s political skills by explaining his greatness, a different task from chronicling a life, though he does that too — and handsomely. Even though I know quite a lot about Jefferson, I was repeatedly surprised by the fresh information Meacham brings to his work. Surely there is not a significant detail out there, in any pertinent archive, that he has missed.”—Joyce Appleby, Washington Post“[Meacham] argues persuasively that for Jefferson the ideal of liberty was not incompatible with a strong federal government, and also that Jefferson’s service in the Congress in 1776 left him thoroughly versed in the ways and means of politics … Meacham wisely has chosen to look at Jefferson through a political lens, assessing how he balanced his ideals with pragmatism while also bending others to his will. And just as he scolded Jackson, another slaveholder and champion of individual liberty, for being a hypocrite, so Meacham gives a tough-minded account of Jefferson’s slippery recalibrations on race … Where other historians have found hypocrisy in Jefferson’s use of executive power to complete the Louisiana Purchase, Meacham is nuanced and persuasive..”—Jill Abramson, The New York Times Book Review“[Meacham] does an excellent job getting inside Jefferson's head and his world … Meacham presents Jefferson's life in a textured narrative that weaves together Jefferson's well-traveled career.”—USA Today “A big, grand, absorbing exploration of not just Jefferson and his role in history but also Jefferson the man, humanized as never before. [Grade:] A-.”—Entertainment Weekly“Impeccably researched and footnoted … a model of clarity and explanation.”—Bloomberg “[Meacham] captures who Jefferson was, not just as a statesman but as a man … By the end of the book, as the 83-year-old Founding Father struggles to survive until the Fourth of July, 1826, the 50th anniversary of his masterful Declaration, the reader is likely to feel as if he is losing a dear friend … [an] absorbing tale.”—Christian Science Monitor“Absorbing . . . Jefferson emerges in the book not merely as a lofty thinker but as the ultimate political operator, a master pragmatist who got things done in times nearly as fractious as our own.”—Chicago Tribune   “[Jefferson’s] life is a riveting story of our nation’s founding—an improbable turn of events that seems only in retrospect inevitable. Few are better suited to the telling than Jon Meacham. . . . Captivating.”—The Seattle Times “[Meacham] brings to bear his focused and sensitive scholarship, rich prose style … The Jefferson that emerges from these astute, dramatic pages is a figure worthy of continued study and appreciation … [a] very impressive book.”—Booklist (Starred Review) “An outstanding biography that reveals an overlooked steeliness at Jefferson’s core that accounts for so much of his political success.”—Kirkus Reviews “Jon Meacham understands Thomas Jefferson. With thorough and up-to-date research, elegant writing, deep insight, and an open mind, he brings Jefferson, the most talented politician of his generation—and one of the most talented in our nation’s history—into full view. It is no small task to capture so capacious a life in one volume. Meacham has succeeded, giving us a rich presentation of our third president’s life and times. This is an extraordinary work.”—Annette Gordon-Reed, author of The Hemingses of Monticello  “This terrific book allows us to see the political genius of Thomas Jefferson better than we have ever seen it before. In these endlessly fascinating pages, Jefferson emerges with such vitality that it seems as if he might still be alive today.”—Doris Kearns Goodwin, author of Team of Rivals “Jon Meacham resolves the bundle of contradictions that was Thomas Jefferson by probing his love of progress and thirst for power. Here was a man endlessly, artfully intent on making the world something it had not been before. A thrilling and affecting portrait of our first philosopher-politician.”—Stacy Schiff, author of Cleopatra: A Life"A true triumph. In addition to being a brilliant biography, this book is a guide to the use of power. Jon Meacham shows how Jefferson's deft ability to compromise and improvise made him a transformational leader. We think of Jefferson as the embodiment of noble ideals, as he was, but Meacham shows that he was a practical politician more than a moral theorist. The result is a fascinating look at how Jefferson wielded his driving desire for power and control."—Walter Isaacson, author of Steve Jobs "This is probably the best single-volume biography of Jefferson ever written; it is certainly the most readable."—Gordon Wood, author of The Radicalism of the American Revolution “This is Jon Meacham's best book yet.  Evocatively written and deeply researched, it sheds brilliant light on facets of Thomas Jefferson we haven't seen before, gives us original and unexpected new insights into his identity and character, and uses the irresistible story of this talented, manipulative, complicated man to bring us life lessons on universal subjects from family and friendship to politics and leadership.  The Sage of Monticello made a considerable effort to turn his life into a mystery, but in a splendid match of biographer with subject, Meacham has cracked the Jefferson code."—Michael Beschloss

THOMAS JEFFERSON: THE ART OF POWER, by Jon Meacham is a great read, I enjoyed it Prologue through Epilogue. It is lively, interesting and insightful. I have read quite a lot on the Revolutionary Era, including several other biographies of Thomas Jefferson, and even so I learned a lot about Jefferson in the reading of this book. However, there are elements of the book with which I take exception.Mr. Meacham states in the Author's Notes that this biography is, in part, a reaction to recent biographies of both George Washington, John Adams and Alexander Hamilton which have revised opinions of these three men, especially Hamilton. He writes, "Then came nearly two decades of highly acclaimed biographies of John Adams, Alexander Hamilton, and George Washington that understandably emphasized the virtues of their protagonist, often at Jefferson's expense"(pg. 507). He cites specifically Joseph J. Ellis's Passionate Sage: The Character and Legacy of John Adams, but I imagine he would also include in that list John Adams, by David McCullough and Ron Chernow's two most recents works: Washington: A Life and Alexander Hamilton (all of them highly readable, excellent biographies).Mr. Meacham does a good job--better than most--helping his reader understand that there was during the post-revolutionary period a real fear in certain quarters that the United States could revert to a monarchy. Not so well done in this book is separating over-heated political rhetoric from what Jefferson actually believed. The fact is, a man as unquestionably intelligent and savvy as Jefferson would have known the difference between hyperbolic political rhetoric-even his own-and reality. It is clear that by the end of Washington's second term Jefferson and the Republicans (largely whipped up by Jefferson and Madison) were frustrated and chaffing at the bit. Even then, I cannot accept, as Mr. Meacham seems to imply, that Jefferson put much store in all the monarchical conspiracy theories that had political currency at that time.On balance most historians seem to believe that it was Jefferson's actions and political maneuverings during the Washington administration which help ignite and escalate the overwrought, highly negative atmosphere that convulsed politics during Washington's second administration and beyond. However, Mr. Meacham does not see it that way. Rather he explains Jefferson's third-party maneuverings and obfuscations as a natural reaction to the situation in which he found himself and what, at his time, would have been expected of a man in his station. I did not completely accept this. Jefferson's relationship with Philip Ferneau and the National Gazette is not fully explored in this book and leaves the reader with the impression that Jefferson was only tangentially involved with the newspaper that regularly ravaged Washington and his administration. But at least Mr. Meacham does allude to the conection. What is a more egregious omission is any exploration of how duplicitous Jefferson (and especially Madison) became in dealing with Washington in his second administration.Although Washington knew and understood that he had political differences with the two men, he still considered them trustworthy confidants. He had no idea the degree to which, through indirect means, the two men were so actively working against him. Jefferson and Madison continued to allow themselves to be taken into Washington's confidence never once indicating that they were anything other that loyal friends. This I think is an essential part of Jefferson's character and should not be excluded from a biography of his life especially one whose stated thesis is to show how artful, skillful and subtle was his accumulation and use of power. The final difference I have with THOMAS JEFFERSON: THE ART OF POWER is the thesis that Mr. Meacham proposes at the beginning of the book and attempts to support throughout: that Jefferson's vision for American, which contrasted with Washington's and Hamilton's allowed him and his proteges to control the Presidency for 40 years with only one four year interruption by John Quincy Adams. It is, of course true enough that Madison, Monroe, Jackson and Van Buren were disciples of Jefferson. But Mr. Meacham's argument that Jefferson accomplished this feat by opposing and triumphing over the policies of Washington and Hamilton is not accurate. In fact, Mr. Meacham seems to believe that Jefferson was able to win the Presidency because, "He understood the country was open to--even eager for-- a government that seemed less intrusive and overbearing than the one Washington and Adams had created" (pg. 352).While it is true that Jefferson and his proteges could not wait for Washington to exit the stage, the country itself never gave that indication, not in the slightest degree. Had he run, Washington would have easily won a third term. Adams, of course, was defeated for reelection, but that was not a rejection by the voters of Washington. Adam's defeat was due more to yawning cleavage in the Federalist Party and the electoral advantage created by the 3/5 clause of the constitution giving a significant Electoral College advantage to states with large slave populations, than to any rejection of Washington, his policies or his style of governing. Moreover, what Jefferson did to consolidate his hold on power was adopted in deed, if not in word, the Hamiltonian idea that the country needed a stronger central government governed by a stronger executive. For all of Jefferson's concern over what he characterized as monarchical power grabs by Washington, Jefferson did more to increase the power of the President with the Louisiana Purchase than Washington did in his entire presidency. And that by no means was the only time Jefferson broadened and consolidated powers of the presidency. Where Washington had used restraint, Jefferson often resorted to expediency. Many such incidences are skillfully explored in this book. The inconstancy they pose to Jefferson's rhetoric are attributed by Mr. Meacham to "pragmatism." In reality, they were actions which if Washington or any other Federalist had engaged in would been haled as auguries of monarchism by the Jeffersonians. The part of this book I found most insightful and interesting is Mr. Meacham's discussion of the debt assumption crisis. I had always believed that Hamilton got the better of Jefferson in this bargain which both resolved the crisis created the debt incurred by the state during the Revolutionary War and sited the nation's capitol on the Potomac. However, Mr. Meacham does an excellent job of explaining all of the many and complicated subtleties, which seemed to be overlooked by other historians, which came in to play here. He argues persuasively how, even though Hamilton got what he wanted in the bargain, Jefferson also negotiated some meaningful concessions. The bargain struck between these two antagonists was actually much more balanced than I originally believed.Having pointed to a few differences with Mr. Meacham and his view of Thomas Jefferson, I very thoroughly enjoyed this book and will most likely read it again. It is beautifully written, meticulously researched and goes a long way to re-balance the modern image of Jefferson, reminding its readers the debt that is owed to the drafter of the Declaration of Independence and the Sage of Monticello.

Great Britain’s hold on its small colonies hugging the Atlantic shoreline was constantly being tested in the mid to late 18th century. A number of remarkable men, all at or near the height of their powers, led the separation from the British rule. Only two or three men made the difference in this intense struggle. Thomas Jefferson was certainly one of these. This superb biography of Jefferson has so many assets: it is relatively brief; it covers most of the important aspects of this complex man’s remarkable life; it leaves us with undiluted admiration for an extraordinary man; and it creates a tension, so much a part of America’s post-Revolution history, between the two major parties that struggled for early supremacy in the opening days of the American republic’s history. Many other historians have surveyed the same ground but few have captured the essence of Jefferson’s personality -- deeply thoughtful, hopeful for the future of the society that was being created, eminently fair but stubborn and occasionally searing, a marvelous friend but a relentless enemy. John Meacham makes a great contribution to understanding the nation’s early story in this history. The scope of the book is vast, covering all of Jefferson’s life, a life lived during the period of time when important events occurred back to back, crowding together from the Revolution to the early days of Washington’s presidency, the struggle between the Federalists, led by Alexander Hamilton, and the Republicans, led by Jefferson, the early expansion of the country westward across the North American continent, the arguments with Great Britain. Jefferson was on center stage for most of this. His instincts were clear and sure: liberty, personal freedom, fairness, stubborness and unyielding when under attack. In such a crowded life, the historian is faced with making choices. I would have wanted a fuller account of the election of 1800, which Jefferson barely won, defeating Aaron Burr by only two electoral votes; I would have liked to have had a more extensive discussion of his relationship with Sally Hemmings, whom he treated reasonably well but never was treated as an equal – a strange footnote to Jefferson’s life which, at least on the surface, was all about freedom and equal rights and the equality of mankind. The discussion of the country’s growing prosperity that enabled it to deal with British attempts to limit the success of the country could have been more extensive. In such a complex life, any historian, including Mr. Meacham, has to make choices. In my opinion, this is a very successful work of history in painting a full portrait of a complex and extraordinary man.

I'm not a Historian or an expert in Jeffersonian policy, but I was interested in Thomas Jefferson's life and accomplishments. This book provides an in-depth historical review that helped me to understand the political and social context during Jefferson's lifetime. Among the many historical facts presented, I was struck by the similarities between Jefferson's election in 1800 and the transition of power from John Adams' presidency, and recent events in the US during 2016-17. For example, an open supreme court position, struggle between State and Federal power, bigger vs smaller government were all in play at that time as they are now. Quoting singer Billy Joel, it's apparent after reading this book that "we didn't start the fire, it was always burning since the world's been turning!"

I began reading this book simply because, somehow, while I'd already read biographies of most of the Presidents - and many of some of them - I had somehow overlooked Mr. Jefferson. This book is not a hagiography - it acknowledges and discusses Jefferson's flaws - but it does something very valuable in how it gets across Jefferson's point of view. As someone schooled in the modern trend I popular writings about the Founding era, and who is more ideologically sympathetic to early Federalism than Republicanism, I had always bought into the caricature of Jefferson as the impractical dreamer and considered some of his antipathy towards his opponents in the 1790s and 1800s as basically irrational. This biography, by telling Jefferson's story in a plain and unadorned fashion, disabused me of such notions.

An Amazon Best Book of February 2018: In Kristin Hannah’s The Great Alone, a damaged vet named Ernt Allbright returns from Vietnam and moves his family to the wilds of Alaska to start their lives anew. Initially it's a welcome change, but as winter approaches, and Ernt's mental state deteriorates, his wife and daughter find themselves in an increasingly precarious position. Leni and Cora are the heart of what is as much a mother-daughter love story as it is a pressure cooker of a page-turner. Together they reckon not only with the elements, but with some bad decisions, born from the stubborn faith that Ernt will somehow be restored to the person he was before the war. It’s a testament to Hannah’s compassionate storytelling that you’ll be hard-pressed to call him a villain; Ernt actually shares the same Achilles heel as the rest of the Allbright clan: they do not know how to ask for, or receive, help (so much so, you just want to shake them). Fortunately the cavalry comes anyway, including a homesteader named “Large Marge” who doesn’t suffer fools (or domestic abusers). The muse of The Great Alone is clearly Alaska--in all its untamed, stunningly beautiful, dangerous glory. It provides the perfect backdrop for an equally dramatic tale, one that feels remarkably current for the 1970s setting. But Hannah’s latest also harkens to her mega bestselling The Nightingale: it highlights the heroics of everyday people, especially women. And it’s just a damn good read. --Erin Kodicek, Amazon Book Review

From School Library Journal

Set in 1974 Alaska, this sweeping tale follows a girl coping with the dangers of domestic violence. Though ill-prepared for the extreme and harsh conditions, 13-year-old Leni and her parents, Ernt and Cora, have to learn how to survive in the unforgiving wild of their new home on the Kenai Peninsula. With the help of the small-knit community of endearing fellow homesteaders, the Allbrights manage to just barely stay afloat. But Ernt, who has never recovered from the trauma of fighting in the Vietnam War, struggles with the isolation and the interminably dark days of winter. Leni grows up witnessing her father (who is increasingly unable to control his paranoia and jealousy) abuse her beloved mother. Leni's greatest comfort and escape is her schoolmate and neighbor Matthew. Over the years, their friendship evolves into a forbidden romance. Hannah highlights, with vivid description, the natural dangers of Alaska juxtaposed against incongruous violence. VERDICT Give to teens who loved the author's The Nightingale and to fans of Jodi Picoult.—Tara Kehoe, Charlotte Mecklenburg Library, Charlotte, NC

After having read and enjoyed The Nightingale and seeing this book’s star rating on Amazon, I thought it would be as good or at least comparable to The Nightingale, but unfortunately that is not the case. It almost seems as though The Great Alone was written by a different author. The plot is formulaic and full of holes, the characters flat and kitschy, and many of the details highly unlikely. The book is a clumsy and sophomoric attempt at portraying complicated and compelling subjects matter.

SO depressing. Per the usual, Kristin Hannah has created layered, fleshy characters and an engrossing story, but you really need to be in a good place emotionally to read this one. While many of her books are bittersweet and run the gamut of life’s emotions, this one is pretty bleak cover to cover. If all is stable and calm in your world and you read it from a place of peace and emotional homeostasis, or you need a catalyst for a bawl fest, go for it! It’s certainly an engrossing read and very well written. But if you have a lot on your plate, or more than a bit of emotional stress in your life at the moment, steer clear. Perhaps the fact that it has had such a strong effect on my state of mind is a testament to Ms. Hannah’s storytelling abilities, but I’d unread this, at least for the moment, if I could. I’m so exhausted and bummed out from reading this, I’m having a hard time getting out of my pjs this weekend! Additionally, there are a couple of areas where the plot line is a real stretch, but I think it’s so well-written overall that those things can be overlooked. Still a very good book, but good grief!

This can best be described as ChickLit meets Adventure with a hearty dose of Melodrama. It is a good story—the kind that keeps you turning pages to find out what happens. And if you enjoy books with riveting plots, this one is for you. But that's about all it has. The characters—and some are quite colorful—are far too one-dimensional. The bad guys are really bad. And the good guys are really good. And there is not much in between.Written by Kristin Hannah, this is the story of 13-year-old Leni who moves in 1974 (in an old VW bus of all things) to the uncivilized wilds of Alaska with her parents, Cora and Ernt. Cora is a loving mother, who thinks of Leni as her best friend. Ernt is a former Vietnam POW, who has nightmares and rages of anger that he takes out on his wife with his fists. This is the classic story of danger, and even in the middle of winter in godforsaken Alaska the real danger can be inside the cabin—not out. While most of the plot is predictable, there are a few unexpected twists and turns that save the book from being totally banal. Still, this is hardly great literature.

Rarely in my 50 years of reading have i come across a story that enfolds me into its pages as did "The Great Alone". The character of Leni takes us on a journey where we don't always want to follow. Her story is raw and honest, told through the innocence of a girl coming of age in the tumultuous 60's. Her description of Alaska is like watching a documentary about the state where we are swept from the water up to the glaciers and see a great panoramic of the wild and pristine state. Alaska herself comes alive as a character here, just as detailed and meaningful as any other. I grew to love the inhabitants of Kenaq as if I had lived there myself. The story flows in an often unpredictable way and leaves the reader wanting more. I am so glad I read this book and I can't wait to recommend it to others.

This was a novel of spousal and family abuse. The stroyline was at times laughably implausible. Too often I found myself reading and thinking “oh come on!” Not a happy tale. Not particularly an adventure. If you want to read about Alaska, read James Mitchner. Or Jack London.

I couldn't read more than 3 chapters. Shallow, too much tell not show, none of the characters were remotely interesting. It seemed to be a list of what the 70's looked like in that it mentions all kinds of things but there is no depth or showing of them. I was deeply disappointed and sorry I wasted money on this.

I’ve read many of Kristin Hannah’s books so was anxious for this one. It was not my favorite but it was good. I learned a lot about Alaska however the first half of the book I found repetitive about Alaska. Very descriptive which I like, but maybe 50pages or so too much description. The second half of the book was fantastic. A lot happened in this story -characters were well defined, the plot was twisting, sad and happy and also horrifying at times. There was a happy ending which made it worth the read and thinking back on it, I really did enjoy it. I do recommend -the author is a great writer. CH

Loved it the descriptions of Alaska, but hated the treatment of the "PTSD." This wasn't just Vietnam-vet run-of-the-mill PTSD. This man must have had problems before he ever went to Vietnam. His "PTSD" was an excuse for spousal abuse, jealousy paranoid delusions of a survivalist nature . I was also disappointed in the relationship between the mother and daughter. The mother's mothering was also poor. She failed to protect her daughter from witnessing the spousal abuse (as well as the couple's sexual relations). The mother didn't really love her husband; she was addicted to him. The "two peas in a pod" line used multiple times in the book was a way of holding her daughter close, just at a time when she should have been individuating. However, I have to say, I was in tears at the end of the book. So, VERY flawed psychology in the book, not at all up to the bar that The Nightingale had set for her, but a tearful ending.

I have thoroughly enjoyed this book and CD combo so far. It is the most informative and trustworthy system for learning Burmese that I have come across so far and I have been looking for months! This is an intensive program and is probably only suited to those who are willing to put lots of time and effort into learning Burmese properly. If you are after a system that will just teach you what you need to know to visit as a tourist I would recommend Burmese By Ear (which can be downloaded for free, just ask google;)) over this combo, but I would recommend spending the money on This Burmese for Beginners Book for anyone wanting to thoroughly learn Burmese to communicate effectively for long stays in Burma. Also I have friends in Burma who I visit every year and can say that they have taught me enough to know that other systems (I wont mention names but they are usually the first you might find if looking for how to learn Burmese on the internet) are not trustworthy and don't teach enough to be understood well in Burma. This book and CD combo works well because it teaches the grammar and sentance structure, the whys of how Burmese works and proper pronouciation, and I have found other systems to be lacking in these things. This criticism does not include Burmese By Ear, which is the only other system I trust.Hope this helps you!

This is a great learning resource if you have the time and patience to do it. I am still using it and find it to be extremely helpful. It provides tools needed to understand the language and its grammar. It really is the best I have found for learning to speak, read and write the language.

Such a helpful course. I was complimented on my Burmese and lack of Foreign accent while speaking......

I like the book, but as a beginner I like something that will explain it better. I have no language skills at all, but I like to learn, so if you have something would easy, let me know.

I bought the book and tape because I'm teaching a class of pre-literate Burmese refugees. They are charming, retirement-age folks who have never been to school. I'm hoping my difficulties with Burmese (considerable!) will show them how wonderfully well they're doing in English. They think the book is very amusing. I can now say "Thank you" and count to six on a good day. I hope they can pass the tests necessary for citizenship. and I can count to ten. Thanks for your interestMargaret

Highly recommended this book and DVD

Thorough study with useful phrases that are ready for immediate use. Nicely laid out and works for the English speaking student to grasp quickly

I do wish there were some pauses and prompts to repeat between each of the audio clips on the CD's. The book is well organized and supported by the CD's, the combination gives you a thorough structure in which to struggle with the tonal language that is Burmese. I intend to be able to cover the basics before arriving in Myanmar and hopefully master "I would like a beer please...No, make that two beers" in time for Dinner on the first day. I think I have my hands full and Burmese for Beginners is keeping me on track very nicely thank you.

Ok so this book is really awesome but it’s not for a complete beginner. I’ve been studying for 2 years at a casual pace, just recently finished the duolingo Italian course, took two short classes at a local adult school as well and this is perfect for my level. So if you have some general knowledge of the different tenses and a little bit of a foundation in vocabulary this is such an awesome book to have. I read the stories on my lunch break and they are the prefect length. They’re each about 6-8 kindle pages long but that takes me about 20-30 minutes to get through. Vocabulary lists from each story are a few pages away, just enough so you don’t always look unless you really need to. You can turn on the Italian English dictionary in kindle too and use that to look up other words as you read. I highly recommend this book if you are an advanced beginner and you are looking for a way to practice reading.

It's so difficult to find reading material to study when learning a new language. I was delighted with this book, because even though there are many words I haven't learned yet, it is easy to figure out the context of each story, and effectively "guess" the unfamiliar words. I'm really enjoying this book, and finding it very helpful.

This book serves as an excellent source of comprehensible input for advanced beginners or intermediate learners of Italian. The summaries, key vocabulary and comprehension questions for each story give readers the support needed for reading and working to understand the story, learning new words in context without providing all the answers. This enables true growth in learning naturally. The stories are varied, fun, and interesting and use several genres so that there is sure to be something engaging for any reader. The length is just long enough to be challenging but not so long as to be overwhelming. I highly recommend this book as a helpful resource for those who are serious about learning Italian and enjoying the process along the way; I truly believe that if you enjoy it, you’ll learn more effectively.

I like this book for several reasons. While I mentioned the fact that you do need an intermediate level of Italian to fully appreciate each story and understand the why's of the usage of verb conjugaison, and articles, each story is quite understandable and can be appreciated thanks to the fact that each story ends with a vocabulary list, a summary of the story in Italian and English and my favorite, a list of questions about the story. The author recommends that you use auxiliary aids such as an Italian learning book to fully appreciate the usage of verbs, articles, grammar and experience how they are being used in writing an Italian story. The author also recommends to take your time in order to fully learn what each story has to offer. And if you do it right there is a lot to learn from each story. I do recommend this very enjoyable book.

I was very happy to get hold of this book. Although I am not a beginner in Italian, I found it very fun and useful to read. It is a fantastic way to learn and practice Italian. You need to have some basic knowledge in Italian to be able to read the stories in this book because it is not really an ABC of the language. What a great idea to provide at the end of each story a summary of it in English! This helps the English-speaking readers check their reading comprehension in Italian. Even more useful is the vocabulary included for each story - a great way to learn new words and be reminded of those you already know but may have forgotten with time. I recommend this book to everyone and anyone who is learning Italian or knows it but wants to refresh vocabulary knowledge and reading comprehension. Five Stars!

As the other reviews have mentioned, this is a great book. Well formatted, great references for vocabulary but it definitely isn't a beginners book. It can help with getting the rhythm of reading Italian and repetition is the key to success. Highly recommended!

Always looking for new things to help me practice. As others said, it’s not really for absolute beginners. I am especially pleased with this book because there doesn’t seem to be much available for the intermediate level making THIS a great resource. I now have the audio version as well and that is VERY helpful. The reading is not too fast but still a challenge for the student.

The stories in this book are very helpful to take vocabulary words I’m studying and give them contextual meaning in sentences and stories. I recommend this book and it’s stories for anyone who wishes to increase their understanding and knowledge of the beautiful Italian language.
