Going with the Grain: Making chairs in the 21st century, 2nd Edition, by Mike Abbott

About the Author

Mike Abbott spent most of his childhood playing in the woods around his home near Bristol. After graduating with a degree in combined science, he returned to the countryside with a variety of jobs in amenity horticulture. While attending a course in arboriculture in 1976, Mike discovered Herbert Edlin’s inspiring book Woodland Crafts in Britain. From this he made his first pole-lathe and set about rediscovering the skills that had been all but lost. Two years later he undertook a course in recreation management which included a study of the recreational potential of small woodlands. Here he developed the concept of the ‘Living Wood’; no longer just a haunt for pheasants and wildlife but an environment where people could re-establish their contact with the natural world. After two years landscaping in Germany’s Black Forest, Mike returned to work in his home village near Bristol, supervising a youth-training scheme on a woodland restoration project. Here he was able to incorporate his new found love of woodland crafts and could see the fulfilment that this kind of work offered to his trainees. In 1985 he set up Living Wood Training with the aim of teaching green wood skills and promoting their potential. In 1989 he wrote his first book, Green Woodwork, and a year later gathered together a small group of enthusiasts to found the Association of Pole-lathe Turners which grew from a band of six in 1990 to an association of over 500 members within ten years. Over the past two decades, Mike has taught his skills for numerous organisations throughout Britain as well as in the USA, Sweden, Denmark and Finland. In 1993, he was joined in his venture by former green-wood pupil, Tamsin Allum, a talented artist, writer and craftsperson who shares Mike's passion for woodlands. Within a year of being together, they had bought a 10-acre woodland in Herefordshire together with five other people. They subsequently renamed it Clissett Wood after Philip Clissett, a local Victorian chairmaker whose former cottage abuts the wood. For ten years this woodland was the home to Mike’s courses in a workshop that he shared with fellow green woodworker Gudrun Leitz. Mike and Tamsin married in 1996. Since then they have lived in a cottage in East Herefordshire. In their spacious garden, they have built two traditional timber framed workshops with wattle-and-daub walls. Mike runs personal tuition and makes chairs in his workshop, while Tamsin creates stained glass illustrations in hers. As well as producing two delightful children they have also published a book entitled Living Wood - From Buying a Woodland to Making a Chair, written by Mike and illustrated by Tamsin. After 10 years of sharing the woodland workshop at Clissett Wood, Mike decided that he needed more time and space for his courses. Meanwhile Tamsin was developing her business in stained-glass, so in 2005 they sold their shares in Clissett Wood. Since then, Mike has established a new base at Brookhouse Wood which he rents from a tree-loving Farmer, four miles along the lane from their home. Mike has now finally achieved his main ambition; to live and work in the countryside in tune with the seasons. Each spring Mike and a group of volunteers reassemble the workshop structures and add new improvements to the woodland facilities. From May to September he runs his woodland courses with a break in July for a family holiday plus craft fairs and some personal tuition. In autumn he wraps up the workshop again for the winter. In the run up to Christmas he spends most of his time at home catching up on administration while giving Tamsin more time in the studio during her busiest season of the year. From January to March, Mike seizes the opportunity on sunny days, to pay his rent by carrying out woodland management at Brookhouse Wood. Otherwise his winter is split between making chairs, writing, running personal tuition and harvesting enough firewood to provide warmth for the cottage, the workshop and the studio.

What a lovely book. Perfect for someone wanting a project to use that drawknife and spokeshave. I found the writing interesting and the pictures fantastic. If you would like to build a chair on your own, using more basic methods then all those power machines, then this is for you.

more then a few spring projects.. well written easy to follow

Excellent book. Printed in the U.K. and uses both metric and Imperial measurements.

I realy like this book -- you see I am in it ,or my chair seat is !! Good chair making book

There are many photos in the book, very clearly ilustrated process of making chairs. The most valuable for me that for any chair discussed is given dimension of elements and shape of jigs for bending legs. New techics to make tenons on rungs is also very practical and easy to make. The book is amazing and worth any euro!!!

In this book one finds a rare mind in a rare discussion nowadays. America suffers from an absence of moral language to diagnose some of our social ills. Not an overbearing self righteous moral vocabulary employed by the religious (or secular) zealots but a cool, calm rational voice that takes careful measure of our moral resources, opportunities and limits. This book offers the latter. Masterfully written and articulated - sentence by sentence, argument by argument.

As far as the physical product itself, this was a sturdy and well-made paperback. As for the text itself, this was my first introduction to Niebuhr, and it really blew my mind. I'm currently on an inquiry into the concerns of intellectuals and politicians regarding the future of liberalism, and indeed Western society, after World War I, so this fit right in easily. Niebuhr voices profound concerns about the weaknesses of contemporary capitalism, socialism, communism, and their proponents. His solution--which he never quite articulates in a manner clear enough for my limited comprehension--is a recommitment to individual justice, Christian love, and compassion within a societal/group context. As many others have noted, he seems to foretell the coming of fascism in Germany, and the coming conflagration of World War II. Also, he clearly laid the groundwork for Martin Luther King, Jr.'s later nonviolence movement, and that's the next place I went in my readings.

This is the foundation work of political science. Niebuhr's emphasis of selfishness in any social group is now a key tenet of realism. His critical stance on love, morality and benevolence in group thinking is provocative and still relevant. The chapters on the mentality of the privileged class and the inevitability of social inequality are highly persuasive. This book is certainly a must-read for all.

The ideas that Mr. Niebuhr discusses in this book should be presented in an educational setting for the enlightenment of students who can then grapple with the problems inherent in all societies. I can think of many things that I wasted my youth on when my time could have been put to better use by studying these issues. I heard of Reinhold Niebuhr from Chris Hedges and Andrew Bacevich, two men whose opinions I respect and I thank them.

I am shocked at how relevant this book is to our current political climate and personal angst we gave in our nation and world. In some ways the actors have changed but the story is the same. This is a challenging book in that as the problem is revealed the solution gets more and more diffused and elusive. Nevertheless this book is worth the read.

I am ashamed to admit, I had never paid attention to writings of Niebuhr. After reading this book, I find myself quoting him regularly. It has provided insight into some fundamental queries I have carried for years regarding Christianity and American’s history.

Hard to read but a good challenge for my mind. Interesting guy. Glad we have more books of his to read.

This is a good book to read, we are moral being and the society is designed in a way that we walk away from ethic. It questions everything, read it and have fun with it.

Isle of Blood and Stone (Tower of Winds), by Makiia Lucier

From School Library Journal

Gr 9 Up—At 19, Elias is a talented and adventurous royal mapmaker for the powerful island nation of St. John del Mar, traveling the world in search of new lands to fill his maps. When he returns to his home city hoping to prepare for his next journey, he instead becomes entangled in a mystery spanning 18 years. Two cryptic maps may contain the clues to find the missing princes of del Mar, as well as Elias' father, once the Royal Navigator of the land. Joined by the young king, Ulises, and the inscrutable diplomat, Lady Mercedes, Elias uses his considerable skills and a bit of luck to unwind the tragic story hidden in the maps. Although this young adult fantasy's pages are graced with ghosts and sea-serpents, the real joy in this novel exists in the intrigue that sweeps readers along. Teens will be drawn to Elias and Mercedes's slow-burning romance—thankfully unhindered by an awkward third party—but plagued by ignorant and misplaced nationalist prejudice among the people of del Mar. St. John del Mar is a diverse nation, populated by a well-rounded cast of secondary characters who help or secretly hinder Elias's quest for truth. Above all, Lucier has crafted an exciting plot of attempted murder and betrayal that simmers just below the surface, right up to the breathtaking twist in the final pages. VERDICT Highly recommended where Tamora Pierce, V.E. Schwab, and Rachel Hartman are popular.—Ashley Fetterolf, Indian Creek Upper School, Crownsville, MD

This may have become one of my favorite reads of 2018! I loved the characters, although Elias was probably my least favorite and I can't really put my finger on why. I wasn't expecting this to have such a big mystery, but it was the perfect blend of a fantasy setting with a major mystery that needed to be solved. I absolutely could NOT put this book down and I had to know who it was that kidnapped the two young princes. I had my suspicions, but I didn't really know who it was until the big reveal! The only thing that I wish had been added was a more detailed version of the map that matched the one described in the book, since maps and mapmaking is such a huge part of this book.

This book was the absolute best mix of everything I love: fantasy, mystery, adventure, and a little romance. I really enjoyed watching the mystery unravel. Elias and Mercedes were very interesting and fun to watch. Great book!

A definite yes for Tamora Pierce fans! Unexpected and delightfully welcome! Lures you in and keeps you turning page after page...Or lying in bed thinking your way through, should you reluctantly need to put the book down for something as tedious as sleep...but when you're already up half the night, what's a few more pages??!So. Good.

I enjoyed the story, world, and characters. I found myself liking the least mentioned character the most.

Excellent read. I love the characters. I really hope that there will be more books coming.

My daughter (14 years old) and I both greatly enjoyed this book. Wonderful character development and fun adventures with mystery and intrigue. I hope there are more to come.

Very interesting and I like the culture and character the author created

I went into Isle of Blood and Stone not knowing exactly what to expect. The reviews I had seen had been slightly mixed; however, the synopsis still greatly intrigued me. I wanted to know more about Elias, the newly discovered maps, and the tragedy that happened 18 years ago.The result? Isle of Blood and Stone completely WOWED me! I LOVED this book! There's so much to like about the Isle of Blood and Stone, and one of the aspects I enjoyed the most was the world building. World building within fantasy can be a huge miss-or-hit, in my opinion. It can make-or-break a book; however, here it built the book up beautifully. I appreciated the level of detail Makiia gave to the kingdom of Del Mar. I enjoyed learning about the kingdom's history: its princes, its feuds, its fights, and its mapmakers. I also liked that Makiia didn't stop just there; instead, she gave offered a picture of the kingdom's surroundings- the different islands, the deadly forest, etc.Isle of Blood and Stone's plot mainly focusses on the mystery surrounding the disappearance of the two princes and Lord Antonni. The prologue gives the first look into what happened the day, and it did a fantastic job of hooking me in. As the book continues, we're quickly thrown into a thrilling adventure, as Elias races to figure out the clues before it's too late. I thought everything contained just the perfect amount of suspense - enough to keep me interested and committed to the story but never feeling too overwhelmed or thinking that certain twists were thrown in for no real purpose but thrill. I also enjoyed that even at the end - when you thought everything large had been revealed - Makiia still had some tricks up her sleeve.Last but not least the characters! The majority of Isle of Blood and Stone is told through Elias's perspective, and I truly enjoyed seeing through his eyes. Elias is an interesting mixture between fearless and scared, brave and cautious. When the book first begins, Elias doesn't view himself as anything incredibly special. Sure, he inherited his father's mapmaking abilities, but he doesn't believe he comes close to being even a quarter of the hero his father was. This quality made Elias more human, in my opinion, and what I really appreciated was the fact that Elias didn't use this feeling to knock himself down; instead, it was more of a doubt, a feeing lurking in the distance. I think it's something that anyone can relate to - feeling as if they'll never live up to the person they're claimed to be "just like" - and Makiia truly captured this feeling perfectly here. I loved seeing Elias grow as the book progressed. He became such a kick-a$$ individual, saving the day more than once.I also liked seeing him evolve in his relationships. His friendship with Mercedes, for instance, was sweet yet spicy. I liked the bond between them, the-push-and-the-pull. Mercedes kept him on his toes that's for sure. Not to mention they were also great partners. Even though there wasn't many scenes with his family, it was easy to see what a loving, caring relationship was there as well. It was easy to see how much he valued his stepfather, his mother, and his siblings, which made the feelings he felt about finding his father even more complex. Was he willing to risk everything - his siblings' s standings, the status of his mother's marriage - for a man that may have been hiding all these years? It was a hard choice. Last but not least: Reyna, the real show stealer! Reyna, a young mapmaker-in-training, is courageous, poised yet bold. I loved seeing her assist Elias with the maps, and I loved the trouble she would get herself in. Nothing got in her way! I've heard the follow-up will be about her, and if that's true, I can't wait!Overall, Isle of Blood and Stone is a standout 2018 release! I can't suggest it highly enough to fans of YA fantasy, especially to those who love Kristin Cashore. It's the kind of book you can't help but read in one sitting. I wanted to spread it out over a few days - savor the plot, the characters, the setting - but I just couldn't, it was too hard.
