This book is quite wordy and sometimes repetitive, but I love that it approaches gender from a scientific point of view. A lot of great studies are included with helpful tables and charts to explain.

It is a beautiful book. I need it for my Psychology of Gender class. So far, an easy read.

Great book! Used in college course on gender roles.

Purchased for a Psych class. Small print, and the author made it too wordy. She could have got her point across in an easier to read format. I am ADD and it took me a lot to stay focused. Author repeated herself too many times, and made valid points spread out, so you would think this is what the study results were, when later in chapter it contradicted that point.

Very cheap, quick and useful!

The book is good, and interesting, but the author repeats herself too much. Example: the point she makes at the start of the heading is just restated every paragraph till the next heading, where the process repeats.

The book​ is a little stained but it works!

Pretty biased toward the left. Has a lot of great information, but Helgeson alienates those in her audience with traditional values.

I'm team Ezra all day, but Lex was redeemed in this book. She became a wife - in the truest sense of the word.Tragedy strikes, and then the truths about his and her past comes to light. They struggle at times. Some very real moments of despair. Lex stands by her man and uplifts him like a good wife should. She becomes so much more in this book.Quite a bit of unresolved drama trickled over from the last book, but we have all of our questions answered in 'Bonded with Ezra.'Nothing is left up in the air. We find the answers about Precious, Rasul, and the painful attack. There are some surprises and lots of heartwarming moments.And...of course the sex is off the charts! 😘Throughout the book I found myself rooting and angry at both Lex and Ezra. They each make mistakes, but their mistakes are clouded with love and what love does to you. It confounds you at times. Both are stubborn, at times missing the words and actions of love being made by the other.Anyway, this was an epic ending to an already epic story. It ends with a HEA.Love Belvin delivered in the final chapter of Ezra and Lex. She did the impossible with this series. She made me love them more.ProsWell written. I didn't observe any grammar mistakes, no I'm hard on authors.Ezra is still Ezra, but now the beast is in love.Lex is still Harlem World. Tough, sweet and gritty.Jealous lover - Ezra is hot!The sex if still off the chain! HOT!We have our questions from Books 1-2 answered.This is a true love story.Emotional journey.ConsIt comes to an end. One of the best series I've ever read.

Love delivers again in this thoughtfully paced and thorough closure to the story of Ezra and Lex.I have never wavered in my affinity for Ezra because while he may have flaws he truly is a perfect character that goes through realistic transformation for the love of a woman. You can feel his growth and the torment he goes through as he incorporates mainstream ideas of love into his unconventional ideas of covenant. The articulation of the bond between him and Lex was a true depiction of what it really feels like to be in true love even when it is imperfect.I like that the characters experienced moments of self awareness that required them to humble themselves in order to right their relationship and that they demonstrated how you can still love someone even though you may not like them in the moment, or appreciate their behavior.The evolution of the characters makes you feel more connected to them because you feel them making adaptations for the success of their relationship. Seeing and feeling in the moment with Ezra as he showed his vulnerabilities was needed so readers could finally understand that this man definitely had a heart and was capable of demonstrating love.It was great to see Ezra lose control even if it was just for a moment dealing with Rasul and to see wavering but fleeting moments of doubt related to his hope and faith. You get a back story to his ties in Kamagu which was great though Lex was slightly too controlled but again that's her growth.Lex wins in the end with the perfect mix of sin and saint with Ezra. The story was well rounded out and will remain my favorite for a long time coming.Thanks Love!

WOW, This book is just...sighsNot gonna give a summary just wanted to touch on two parts that stood out to me(although there were so many). When he was explaining his time in India and the work he was doing, he was basically telling Lex he was a sex worker. No, he was not a prostitute but that was the industry he worked in and that really blew my mind. He has such a complicated relationship with sex and it could of went so very wrong especially because of his calling in life. Instead he was honest with himself and asked God to send him a wife that he didn't have to hide it from, he could own and explore it with and that's what he got. Another one of my favorite moments is when broke down on the pulpit right before had to preach and the singer had to come and sing him out of his funk. For the first time since he'd accepted his calling to do Gods work, in that moment he was so broken because of the state of his relationship with Alexis he didn't want to perform what he was called to do.That moment maybe more than anything expressed just how deeply he loved his wife that she could get him to a point, even for just a moment, that he had no interest in heeding Gods calling for his life.Also Alexis is such a strong,resilient, incredible woman.If there was anyone who could teach Ezra how to love she was it. For her to find out her father was apart of the reason she was attacked and she still found a way to not hate him just speaks to how truly pure of heart she is.Last Also lol you always develop the secondary characters JUST enough that they enhance and not take from the main characters and story thank you for that so many writer just can't find the right balance.Love, you are truly a gifted and incredible artist please don't make us wait to long for you next book we're ready for it NOW lolSpeaking of your next book I'm gonna go ahead speak for everyone and tell you we miss Ezra and Alexis already wouldn't mind if you continue/revisited them SOON

I recently purchased two North Korean photo books, "North Korea" (which is this one) and "Inside North Korea" (Inside North Korea). Both books are excellent but the two are actually quite different."North Korea" is by far the more beautiful of the two books. The weather seems to have been good while the photographer visited the country. The photos are stunning, and the layout is clean and very nicely done. In the introduction, the authors explain why they chose not to add the usual commentary critical of the country's government. So there are no lambasting articles cluttering-up the layout, which is refreshing and works to the book's advantage. Instead, photo captions are brief and neutral, explaining the photos without going off on a tangent.Although Pyongyang is North Korea's 'showcase' city, if you look closely at the pictures, you can often see the crumbling bricks, the deteriorating roads and buildings, the vehicles that look like they've been recycled from another county, etc. Again, the typical negative comments aren't there to point all this out, but they aren't really needed because it's there in plain view.This photo book isn't the most comprehensive, since most of the photos are of Pyongyang. But instead of just focusing on the same series of monuments and buildings, this book also has plenty of photos of the landscape, the streets, and most importantly, the people. This book portrays the human side better than many other North Korean books, and it's one of the reasons why I find myself picking it up so often.

Beautiful, eery photos of a fascinating land and people. Book is substantial and laid out nicely.

Photo books about North Korea are few and far between and then two come along together (I wonder if publishers just hate that?). The other title is Inside North Korea with photos by Mark Harris. In fact they cover different aspects of the same country.Philippe Chancel's book essentially covers the capitol Pyongyang but Harris visits several places in the country. Pyongyang is stuffed with bureaucrats, civil servants and the military plus their families so it can hardly be considered truly representative of the country. Chancel's beautiful photos reflect this. You'll have to look hard to find the tell-tale signs of the typical third world city: poverty side by side with the wealthy few, falling apart infrastructure, litter and just too many people. What you will see are wide boulevards lined with apartment blocks, trees and grass covered areas, huge, solid, predictable socialist style museums, monuments and plenty of signage revealing the (wise?) political thoughts of the Great Leader and his lad. It all seems clean, tidy and nothing out of place. Even close-ups of people don't reveal inferior and tatty clothing. For the real Korea you'll have to look at the Mark Harris book.Both books rightly cover the extraordinary Arirang Massed Games (Chancel has twelve excellent photos) held in the 150,000-seat May Day Stadium where 100,000 performers parade and surrounding them 20,000 to 40,000 students create amazing human pictures by holding flip boards above their heads. How this part of the Games is organised would make a book in itself. Chancel also has several photos inside the Children's Palace showing embroidery, dancing and singing classes. I wonder if this kind of education is the norm outside of Pyongyang?'North Korea' is a fascinating book (well designed and printed with 175 dpi photos) revealing a bit of this weird, closed nation though I would have liked to see some photos of how the average person lives at home. Many a day I've fondly recalled the stunningly good Reubens, served up with potato salad and all-you-can-eat dill pickles on the side, to be had at my favorite deli. That was years ago and far away. These days, the closest I can come to a real deli is the grocery store counter or my own kitchen. About a year ago someone did open an "Italian deli" not far from the state capitol in Montpelier, but I've never seen more than a single car in the parking lot. Thus, I was delighted to come across The Deli Maven's Cookbook, stayed up late to read every word and even shared it with my friends on Facebook because it is THAT good!David Cowles is a cook after my own heart! He had my full attention the very second that he talked about buying a dozen or more corned beefs when they are on sale for St. Patrick's day. I do exactly the same and am counting the days until corned beef goes on sale again. My freezer is bare! (No worries, I'll just pick up a brisket the next time I go to town and give David's recipe for making my own corned beef a whirl.) I was further encouraged when I found that a fair number of the recipes that he provides are nearly identical to my own and that he thinks the best rye bread he ever made is the exact same one that I have ever made, found in Secrets of a Jewish Baker: Recipes for 125 Breads from Around the World, one of my Top 3 books of bread baking!This is an extensive book, full of information, stories and jokes that will keep you interested and reading from the first page to the last. Wonderfully formatted, Cowles has even been thoughtful enough to include links to sources of things like mustard & spice jars and extra information, like the debate over the origins of curry powder. If I have a quibble, it is that he has not discovered yet that the barley malt syrup so necessary for real, authentic bagels is cheaper by far here on Amazon, both Barley Malt Syrup, 16 fl. oz. and Eden Foods Organic Barley Malt.Highly recommended!

While reviewing another of Mr. Cowles' interesting cookbooks, I realized that I had neglected to rate and review this terrific one that first introduced me to his writing. I'm a serious cook and cookbook collector with hundreds of print books on food and now about 150 digital examples so far on my Kindle.I love a book that is both well written and with recipes that actually work. There are all too many alleged cookbooks that are just pirated from recipe sources or badly put together or simply don't make good food. Cowles' book is well edited and tells an interesting story as well. It is a book that I recommend highly to the curious or adventurous cook. The recipes are detailed enough that even beginners should be successful. Most of all, the food and the recipes are workable and delightful.My introduction to what is largely Jewish ethnic food came from my mother. She was raised in a Southern Baptist family whose cook for many years kept Kosher! She might be turning in her grave to see how much her liver-loathing eldest now lusts after good chopped liver, though. While she was an accomplished cook, she mangled liver badly with vulcanized liver that even the starving would have been hesitant to eat. Cowles presents recipes that just might jar her and you into trying some new and delicious things like homemade pastrami.The recipes in this book are also quite frugal compared to buying deli style food and in time of tight money, that's yet another thing to recommend the work. If you aren't quite convinced by these reviews, at least try a sample and enjoy the writing style as well as the recipes.

But it's more than a cookbook ... from the jokes to the anecdotes, Cowles brings deli alive from the first page to the last. I am fortunate to have friends who have initiated me into proper deli and Cowles clearly knows the real thing. To have these recipes is a genuine jewel. My only disappointment (and not rating the reduction of a star) was that I was really looking forward to a kippered salmon recipe as I prefer that to lox or nova, so I guess that makes me (and some of my friends) non-standard deli patrons. Regardless, great cookbook that is also an entertaining read. Thanks for that!

I rented this for an online class, and it came in very poor condition. The book had a bunch of different food/beverage stains that were so large it looked as if the book had been submerged in coffee rather than having coffee spilled on it, and it felt as if whoever did the spilling didn't even bother to wipe it off, but just let the stains absorb into the book. A bunch of the pages were stuck together and my roommate and I couldn't get them apart without tearing them. She had also rented this book off of Amazon the semester before for the same class and hers had come in great condition. Additionally, throughout my four years of undergrad, I have never had a rental textbook from Amazon come in anything less than good condition, so we were both a bit surprised by the situation. It just sat in the corner not being used because I didn't even want to touch it. Luckily for me, I didn't even end up needing to use it for the class.

Food and Culture I rented this book for a nursing class for my daughter. As a nurse myself I like to read though her books and help her with her studies. I found this book to be very informative about different cultures and their relationship to food. Very helpful to help you deal with their dietary needs in healthcare.

I rented the kindle e-book and selected the date which I wanted the rental to end August 5th (which was the last day of my class). Everything went smoothly but today July 13th three weeks before class ends suddenly my rental was expired. Wtf. Weird. So I went back onto amazon to rent it again and now it wont let me select my own return date and instead it is saying the rental has to be until October and will cost me another $36.00. So basically I selected the date my class ended for the rental expiration date and suddenly it changed. And now it has to be rented until October just so that they can rack up the price....shady..

These were exactly what was expected and were a great alternative to buying text books. The process to buy and return was easy.

It is unfortunate this book lacks some consideration for students despite ample information it offers. Like some reviewers mentioned, nothing is in bold, which forces you to waste your time looking for a term.

"The Bacchae," along with Sophocles' "Oedipus at Colonus," marks the end of the great age of Greek tragedy. The conventional wisdom about this play--at least since Friedrich Nietzsche--is that here Euripides repented his earlier rationalist debunking of the Olympian pantheon and returned to the simple faith of his ancestors. I have my doubts. "The Bacchae" resembles nothing so much as a cautionary tale of the 1960s counterculture. While Pentheus, with his mental rigidity and fear of change, bears a striking resemblance to the hero of Chinua Achebe's "Things Fall Apart," Dionysus brings to mind such charismatic--and deadly--cult leaders as Charles Manson, David Koresh, and Jim Jones. Interestingly Dionysus' entourage, like the Manson family, is almost exclusively female. The disgusting savagery of Dionysian ritual illustrates the dangers of abandoning reason, logic, and human decency to follow our dark primitive instincts. A modern treatment of the same theme is Thomas Tryon's "Harvest Home." Paul Woodruff provided the highly informative introduction (although I disagree thoroughly with his conclusions) and his translation into vigorous, straightforward contemporary English gives us a glimpse of what a shattering impact "The Bacchae" must have had on its first audience. "The Bacchae" may well be one of the most disturbing creations in the western literary canon.

Even though the circumstances aren't current - citizens running off to the countryside to worship Bacchae - and the drama is not what moderns expect - most of the action takes place offstage, there is something in this play that is moving and still speaks to the human experience - at least it did to me. Perhaps it's simply that the characters are thoroughly invested in what they believe to be right and true - and they are also deluded - and pay heavily, the heaviest possible price. Impossible not to be moved by that fundamental human experience even if circumstances are completely different now.I am not competent to judge the translation, other than it was easy to read. The notes were comprehensive, the opening introduction was very helpful.

I'm working on my degree in Ancient Greek, and I'm translating through the Bacchae in one of my classes right now. I have a really good english translation in a big book of Euripides plays, but I wanted a smaller english copy of just the Bacchae to write in/highlight/carry around while I was working on a paper. I couldn't find on the product page who did this English translation, but I figured it would be fine because I wasn't really using the English for anything but helping me find specific parts more quickly so I could look them up in the greek version.Still, this translation is really not good at all. If you're actually wanting to read the Bacchae, find a different translation that does it at least some justice. I like the translation by Stephen Esposito, or you can read it for free on the Perseus website (they use the T.A. Buckley translation).PROS: it's a lightweight and cheap version, if you just need a referenceCONS: it is NOT true to the Greek and not very artfully done. If you want to read and appreciate the Bacchae, see my suggestions above.

Medea by Euripedes was a play I chose for my 2015 reading challenge. The play, with only 47 pages took about 1/2 hour to read. My first thought was.....doesn't the woman on the cover look like Salma Hayek?The play centers around Medea, a goddess who falls madly in love, emphasis on MADLY, with Jason. She gives up everything for this man. We're talking killing, stealing, betraying her father and home, the whole kitten caboodle. She has 2 sons by him then one day, bang........homeboy hooks up with this younger chick, leaves Medea and the kids and marries this home-wrecker. Say what???? Say it isn't so........ oh, it's so!To put icing on the cake, this home-wrecker's daddy (Creon) banishes her from the land. Allowed to stay one more day she plots her revenge and baby she went for it. Unfortunately her revenge is an act that would cost a lifetime of suffering not only her husband but herself as well.Medea, although a quick read, is very powerful. You will agree with Medea and understand her pain but will hate her for her decisions. Jason is a loser who tries to convince Medea that what he was doing was for a good reason. Let me tell you something, no one (woman) in there right mind would believe it. What's interesting is the mentality of both individuals. Medea was not afraid to show her emotions, whether sadness, fear or anger but Jason remained calmed and had no hatred towards her. She screamed at him, called him names, yet he thought they could still remain friends until the end.With no idea what this play was about or how it would turn out. I'm glad I chose it.

The student should always be aware that the scholar could be wrong in his interpretation, however excellent the scholarship. Studying Greek allows the student to read this type of scholarly work and make a meaningful contribution or interpretation of the play.

I read this for the first time years ago. I read it again in preparation for writing the sequel to the Sparrow Princess, which will be told from the main antagonist's viewpoint. To say this is a story about a woman scorned doesn't even come close to describing the intensity of Medea's hate. Although I could clearly see both sides of this conflict, it occurred to me that this tragedy repeats itself over and over again to varying degrees even until today. And like the story illustrates, the children are always the ones who suffer the most.

The first 1/3rd of the book was very helpful, the 2nd became incredibly long winded as it reiterated previous talking points from earlier chapters. the final 1/3rd didnt seem to include much valuable information at all. The book is certainly on point in its strongest areas but I feel like theres more filler than anything and you can probably find the same information in a better book. All you really need to do is read the first few chapters and you get the gist of the entire book

I love this book! Patrick Hanlon deeply understands that branding and marketing is first and foremost about truly connecting on a human level with the audience. Branding is still part science, part art and a good deal of luck.The book is well written, easy to read and filled with many examples of very successful brands - from coca-cola to lego to U2. Hanlon goes behind the scenes to uncover what made the brands successful. He gives great insight into the things we must do to make our own brands successful.While we have the essential steps to brand our products or services, we still need to bring the emotional connection into the process. That of course is where the art and luck comes in.If you are responsible for marketing your services, you really need to read this book.

As a relatively new member of the marketing profession, I've been reading a lot of books to help me grasp marketing concepts and techniques. Of those, this has been the most unique. The main concept I took away from this particular tome is that more than one factor comes into play when you're establishing a brand image. Everything--from the logo to the buzz words--associates your product and brand in a consumer's mind.I really enjoyed reading about the various ways companies came into being, the way various entrepreneurs were interviewed. One story I found particularly fascinating was that of the founders of "Fast Company."Overall, this was a worthwhile read, but don't expect to come away with an outlined set of steps to follow to cause your brand to "pop." Rather, you'll find a set of guidelines that you can use toward creating your own primal brand.

I have spent quite a bit of time lately explaining to our clients the importance of story telling. Create a great story, and you will be able to create great zealots for your brand. That is the essence of this book. As the author states early on, "The creation story is the crucial first step in providing answers to why people should care about you, or your product or service."The book, like many other books on branding, reiterates a lot of common sense theories that cause the reader to say, "Well of course, that makes sense." That's okay! It is worth being reminded once in awhile why the basics work. That being said, this book does utilize current brand examples that help prove the theories correct. This is a book that I would recommend if you were looking for a good basic book on branding in theory and practice. It's worth the money.

Best marketing book so far. Makes you really think about the core of who you are as a person/ or your product. It brings you to the ground level then works you up from there instead of throwing random useless facts, and ideas at you. It does a great job pointing out how all the successful companies/ personalities are applying the principles.
