As a celibate gay Christ-follower, I’ve been bumping up against this societal romantic zeitgeist in the evangelical church for years. I felt it but I never knew quite how to articulate the confusion I’ve experienced because of it. Reading this book was so tremendously encouraging. I wish it’d been written sooner. Callaway gave a prolific, relevant and concise explanation of the problem as well as a hopeful Kingdom response to this problem. It didn’t leave me discouraged about the lack of Christ-like community in the Western Church. On the contrary I finished it quite excited about how the Spirit is moving! I’ve purchased three copies so far just so that I can share them. And... I’m likely to purchase more! Thank you, Kutter Callaway!

This book uses multiple different perspectives to cover a touchy, pivotol subject in society for both religious folks and non-religious folks alike.

In Breaking the Marriage Idol, Kutter Callaway deftly exposes unbiblical and problematic assumptions about marriage (and thus also singleness) woven into the fabric of current American Evangelicalism. He first offers solid analysis of our secular culture’s messages about marriage. He then brilliantly illustrates how many evangelical attempts to steer clear of those messages have ended up unwittingly conveying some of the same unbiblical themes and assumptions. He writes: “My bigger concern with evangelical purity culture is that while ministries … claim to offer a ‘Christian’ or ‘biblical’ alternative to the visions of sexuality, marriage, and single life that are swirling about in the public sphere, they are actually using nearly identical scripts.”In the process of laying out his bold challenge, he takes great care on numerous occasions to clarify what he is not saying, lest he be misunderstood. I really appreciate his care in this. He also gives significant positive credit to some of the people and ministries he critiqued, showing an admirable balance often not seen from those presenting a radical and prophetic assault on the status quo. For example he shows ways in which Martin Luther laid the foundation for Protestants to hold a skewed view of marriage. Yet he helps us appreciate Luther in his historical/theological context: “Luther was trying to…correct an overemphasis on singleness that had been in operation within the church for the first fifteen hundred years of its existence.” I think every evangelical who ever says anything about marriage or singleness would greatly profit from reading at least the first section of this book.I found the section on the Old Testament to contain some interesting insights, but less compelling than the first section. And the coverage of the New Testament holds some essential insights often overlooked by most evangelicals. He writes: “Our goal here is to reconsider the distorted picture of marriage and sex that holds the church captive by exploring what the Bible actually has to say.” He concludes: “In the first place, the New Testament authors are clear that marriage is not the normative relational model for the Christian individual or for the Christian community. Marriage is simply one possible option for followers of Christ. It is neither the chief aim of human life nor the pinnacle of human existence. Second, from a New Testament perspective, celibate singleness is an equally legitimate option for the Christian – perhaps even the preferred one.”I appreciate Callaway’s very helpful pastoral applications and proposals for both married people and singles, and his careful consideration of the needs and potential for single followers of Jesus – whether heterosexual and perhaps wishing to be married or homosexual and choosing to remain celibate out of obedience to Christ. I’m not sure I’m on board with all his proposals for the way forward; I still need to think more about some of these things. But his critique is right on the mark and he has done much more than just criticize; he has offered creative ideas for new patterns. As he points out: “A great majority of evangelical initiatives that focus on directing the sexual desires of Christians…are not only highly individualistic but also largely preventative in nature….In other words, they are concerned primarily with curbing or suppressing sexual desire rather than harnessing its energies for good. But the paradigm shift I am proposing requires us to move from preventative measures to sustaining practices.” His reframing of the issues at stake offers great potential for useful discussion, creatively biblical thinking, and possible fresh paths forward for the whole body of Christ. If you want to say or do anything about marriage, singleness, or LGBT issues, I recommend you read Callaway’s perspective first.

A provocative, challenging book, this scholarly but accessible volume prods us as Christ followers to consider and ultimately reconsider what we've always been carefully taught about the institution of marriage -- particularly within the context of Christian church life. It explores the central question, "Should all Christians be married?" and provokes discussion on how the church has limited the single Christian's ability to serve and worship from a leadership role within the church culture. Its frank discussion of sexuality among Christ followers and the questionable effectiveness of the abstinence gospel should be required reading for young adult church leaders and small-group leaders. Be prepared to take it slow through the pages, as it is a theologically-rich text, but in the end, it very well could change the way you think about marriage within the context of a faith journey.

Thoughtful and theological! A must read!
