A light and entertaining read. Love the way he writes.

Easy read - good tips.

If I inherited anything from my father at all, because I damn sure didn’t get his maths genius gene, then it is a thirst for knowledge. I read a lot, and I acquire a lot of seemingly useless facts, tidbits or information. You just never know when you’re going to need to know that penguins can jump up to three meters high or that it is illegal to hunt and kill camels in Arizona. Really? How many camels are there in Arizona that they need a law to protect them?Essentially this is what 147 Things is about. A collection of odd facts connected via witty commentary. I don’t think I am going to get over the whole kangaroo fact, now every time I look at one I will be wondering about what is hidden in that pouch. To be completely frank the concept of a book of random facts could be considered a wee bit boring after a while, and that exact thought crossed my mind just a few facts or chapters in. Then the book took a slightly different direction and became more personal. Specifically from Thing 19: Some people aren’t bad, they just do bad things, onwards. The element, which I believe redeems the book, and makes it not only an entertaining read but also a heart-warming one, is the part of himself Chapman puts into the book.He lets the reader take a close look at his memories and what is in his heart. He lets us in to take a snapshot of what has shaped him as a child and as a young man, and this is what makes this more than just a book about odd and interesting facts.*I received a free copy of this book courtesy of the publisher via NetGalley.*

This book jam-packed with weird and fascinating facts is very suitable for the colder season because when else will you have all the time in the world to properly hibernate with a read for hours on end and soak up knowledge from the start of the universe to strange phobias? YouTuber Jim Chapman has broken the content-creator mould with this very different and really wonderful non-fiction read that not only provides heaps of interesting tidbits but funny stories from his own life too; making it a relateable read both for existing fans and people who are not yet familiar with him. Besides, with facts and stories on zombies, why Jurassic Park is all lies, life (and death) and belly buttons – there is something new and interesting to discover within the pages of this book for anyone, regardless of what you're into!

147 Things is a surprising five-star read. I will be honest I picked this up as I thought I would finally have something to talk to my husband about. (He’s a fan of the dude). I didn’t expect much, but it blew me away, don’t know if I will be watching the youtube but you never know. If it’s as funny and interesting as this, maybe I will have to check it out. It’s filled with funny anecdotes and facts that had me searching for more. Well done on a great read.

Review

St. Mary's Weekly: Black and White and Dread All Over To spend an evening with Rossignol is to turn the clock back to the down-and-dirty days of police beat reporting when "legmen" chased ambulances to accidents and fires and police cruisers to the scenes of crimes. --- The Washington Post page one article by Eugene L. MeyerIf the deputies disagree with what St. Mary's Today had to say, they are free to denounce the paper, Wilkinson suggested. They can even sue for libel. But as he concluded, "to summon the organized force of the sheriff's office to the cause of censorship" "belongs to a society much different and more oppressive than our own." One where the government, not the citizen, decides what is the truth and what are "outright lies." - Jane Kirtley in the American Journalism Review described the landmark decision of the Fourth Circuit U. S. Court of AppealsThis is the story of a dying breed of newspaperman. The term Journalist does not do them justice. These were newspaper men. This was a paper cut from the sturdy cloth of old. When a paper took sides and the editorial staff didn't worry about the fallout from the cowardly ad folks. It was an outfit who called it exactly as they saw it, with little concern if the old boy network was exposed to the bright light of public scrutiny. They sunk their teeth into a story and did not let go until the corrupt politicians, drug dealers or unsavory businessmen were brought to justice. - Kevin BrubeckIf you've ever wondered what it was like to peel the thin veneer of civility off a small town and look underneath, this book will do the trick. Ken Rossignol is the kind of courageous newspaperman I admire, and that I'd love to sit down and swap war stories with. - Nick Russell, New York Times Best Selling AuthorEven after all these years since I retired in reading Ken's book, THE RAG I learned a great deal that I had never known at the time about people that I did know, or remembered. When I was an instructor at Criminal Justice Academy (and later its Director) I always saw several copies of it circulating amongst the student officers as well as the staff. No one ever confessed to having purchased the St. Mary's Today newspaper and most denied ever having read it yet stories were quoted almost verbatim from it by nearly any student officer, staff instructor or any regular officer. Lt. From the Author

When an expert witness was asked to appraise the value of ST. MARYS TODAY for the Civil Rights action brought by Levine Sullivan Koch & Schultz on my behalf - James Rouse, who was an executive with one of the largest media firms in the nation and former provost of Stanford, summarized the newspaper this way. He said he had never seen a newspaper with revenue from readers outweighing revenue from advertisers. That conclusion supported our slogan - Dedicated to Our Readers - When I sold the newspaper in 2010, the new owner appeared to have the financial ability and determination to continue the newspaper. He ran into various legal troubles and closed the newspaper eight months later. Anytime he wishes to return it to publication, I will be glad to assist him. In the meantime, I heard from many in the region wishing that actual news instead of pabulum from local media be reported. I heard from many folks elsewhere, outside of Southern Maryland, and beginning in the spring of 2014, my monthly publication, THE CHESAPEAKE was morphed into THE CHESAPEAKE TODAY and now covers crime in Maryland, Delaware and Virginia in print monthly and online always. The print edition is available on over 1,000 newsstands in all three states. All Crime, All The Time. Readers wishing politically correct reporting of the news have plenty of options as that field is crowded. Those who wish to see whatever we can find out, can pick up a copy of THE CHESAPEAKE TODAY. To learn more about ST. MARY'S TODAY, please pick up a copy of my book and the narrator for the Audible edition, Stan Jenson, does a masterful job of making the book entertaining as well as informative. Thank you for reading my book. - Ken Rossignol

The Story of The Rag is a cutting and brilliant story of the newspaper St. Mary's Today.....the blurb tells us "In the short course of less then one year, a small-town newspaper which was run on a shoe-string was featured on the front page of two major newspapers and on network news, all due to covering the news with loud flashy headlines that "shouted" the news rather than boring its readers to tears. In short the news made news. That was just the beginning, before long the newspaper would be the target of an organized effort by a county sheriff and his deputies ad a candidate for states attorney to clean the newspaper off the newsstands the night before an election and results in a landmark First Amendment case which is now the law of the land."We can see this story is a story of a dying breed of newspapermen and women. There are newspapermen and then there are those who do not candy coat the news. This is when a newspaper took a side and the editorial staff didn't worry about the fallout. They called it like they saw it and showed the public what was wrong with the system, be it with drug dealers, unsavory politicians or corrupt businessmen. They were exposed and brought to justice. Ken Rossignal did a great job of showing it like it is and how newspapers should be run.

I have read quite a few of author Ken Rossignol's books and have to say that I have found "The Story of THE RAG!" to be one of the most interesting and enjoyable reads so far. I love little-known history and this story is a riveting one. The fact that Rossignol himself plays a big part in it is also quite intriguing. This book recounts the history of a small-town newspaper in Maryland that was run much different than any other. Pretty much a one-man show, run by Rossignol, the St. Mary's Today newspaper was known for its flashy tabloid-esque headlines and no-holds-barred news reporting. Readers seemed to love it, unless they were the ones being reported on. This is where the controversy arose. One story in particular, about a decades-old rape involving a now candidate for states attorney caused much contention. In fact, after a late night raid by a posse of deputies of all of the news stands just before the election, things got interesting. With the FBI now involved, Constitutional rights came into question. This was a fascinating account, not only of an interesting news story that I found pretty disturbing, but also of the rights of the newspaper to report the news as it saw it years later. The publisher's motives were called into question at every turn and this isn't surprising when people, good or bad, are fighting for their political lives. Another well written and fascinating account from Rossignol.

A fascinating read on how a small-town newspaper came to be!I have to say, although I knew nothing of this paper ("The Rag") and had no connection to it, the story was gripping nonetheless; I found myself eager to learn more about it. Ken Rossignol has, and willingly shares, an abundance of interesting stories about his newspaper.Definitely the reader will find some funny incidents and some somber ones to connect to. On occasion I was genuinely concerned for the welfare of the people Ken told about! There were some pretty scary situations, actually. We're talking about dealing with gritty events and shady people; drugs, murders, abuse, and more "dark side" matter.NOTE to the discerning reader: In addition to some of the topics mentioned above, there is on occasion some vulgar words, or references to them.I actually had both the audiobook and ebook version of The Story of the Rag. I decided to listen to the book as audio, but then I would flip through the ebook later for all the pictures and newspaper "toons" -- which really help to tie the whole book together. Both the audiobook and ebook make for a great-quality read -- no matter which YOU pick!Overall? Ken told about it ALL in a compelling way. He got me entangled in The Rag by the end, that's for sure.

I found it astonishing that Ken Rossignol managed to keep 'The Rag' ( St. Mary's Today Newspaper) going as long as he did, considering the style of writing he's used for this book. What should have/could have been an amazing tour de force of journalistic investigation and ethics, turns into a barely readable collection of anecdotes that omits so much of the "6 W's", I was forced to wonder how anything happened that honestly changed the system of "good old boy" cronyism in local Maryland politics.

As a former small town newspaper publisher myself, who was known for stepping on toes and exposing what public official's hand was caught in the cookie jar or under the wrong skirt, I related very well to Ken Rossignol's great book, The Rag. I've dealt with many of the same type of corrupt elected and appointed officials, including a county sheriff who stood in my office and swore to stop my car and shoot me dead some dark night. If you've ever wondered what it was like to peel the thin veneer of civility off a small town and look underneath, this book will do the trick. Ken Rossignol is the kind of courageous newspaperman I admire, and that I'd love to sit down and swap war stories with.Be warned, don't start this book unless you have time to finish it, because it is a fascinating read that I didn't want to put down. The only problem I had with the book was that on my Kindle, the editorial cartoons were hard to see, and they were very much a part of the newspaper's character. This is a problem with the basic Kindle, and they showed up much better on my iPad. But don't let that stop you, as I said, the story is fascinating.
