I couldn’t hate this book more if I tried. 90% of it is useless garbage she clearly added just so that she could fill a book. The amount of useful information would be better served by a pamphlet. I literally could not read a sentence in this book without immediately forgetting what I had just read. Only thing positive I can say is that it is an amazing sleep aid. Unfortunately, it was required, and our teacher loved the useless information more than life itself, making sure that her tests were almost exclusively based on it. I’m burning this book as soon as I’m sure I don’t need it anymore for school. That day will truly be glorious.

Good rental price for a full semester, considering it's about $90 at best to buy new everywhere I looked. Amazon gives a good amount of time to return it-they seem to be in sync with when semesters generally end.Mine still has the access code unused (score!) and moderate highlighting. Amazon doesn't guarantee that the access code will be unused/unpeeled-if your professor requires this then look elsewhere because it's luck of the draw. I also like that you can return at end of semester with free shipping label from your account. As for this book, it's pretty dry-but required so no choice. #nursingschool

Literally the WORST textbook I've ever had in my life. So much useless fluff that you don't need to be reading. I feel like 99% of this book was just a complete waste of time and brain space. "There is no I in team, and this is very important to note" actual quote out of the book. If you have to get this book for your class, I'm sorry. I could probably write a whole other book about how terrible this book is. It even said Freud was alive during the 18th century... ARE YOU SERIOUS???

I needed to purchase this book for a semester I am currently taking. I chose to purchase the digital copy. I love the convenience of the book, I can use it on my phone and ipad and it was nice to always have it with me to complete assignments. What is most disappointing is that the book does not show page numbers which I need for assignments. I ended up ordering the hard copy.

As a nursing student, having fewer books is better, so I ordered the Kindle edition. Unfortunately, it does not have page numbers, thus making it rather difficult to read assigned pages. Since I'm still attempting to figure out how to correlate assignments to the Kindle edition, I have yet to read it.The price is phenomenal. The campus bookstore wanted $75 for a print edition. Having it in my Kindle library will keep it available to me forever...and I don't have to worry about it getting lost, damaged or stolen!

the book is small and easy to fit in your backpack, but it was never used in my class. the online version of the book is HORRIBLE. the online version is so terrible and formatted so badly.

I found the implication that there are too many "white" and "female" nurses rather offensive (ch 3, pg 99, "The White Female Face of Nursing: It Needs to Change.")Additionally, I found it rather disgusting that the author QUOTED HERSELF, from another book she authored, as a reference!! Seriously? She did this in a few chapters- one was simply not enough!Depending on the chapter, you might get some information that spans from great to average. (Put your money on average.)There is a HUGE conflict when she writes about Evidence Based Practice (EBP) on page 339. The book states "Research done for research's sake, without ever influencing clinical research or making it into practice, might as well not be done." Uhhhhh. Yeah, so Finkelman is a dummy and does not understand that TRUE scientific or medical exploration gains as much from the failures as from the successes.If your school insists this is a required book- FIND ANOTHER SCHOOL.

I didn't find this book as helpful as the previous edition but overall it was pretty helpful.

Every since learning of this book I have been looking forward to read it simply because it involved traveling in Yemen, a country that has a long and interesting history and is a place that is not accessible to much of the world's citizens currently. Having had the opportunity to visit Sana'a, Yemen for a week in 2009, and knowing that it was a rare and unique experience that I will not have again for a long time, I have become interested in what the country is like outside of Sana'a. Reading the news lately, it really seems like it is the "wild west" out there. I can only imagine what it is truly like.Eric Hansen's book reveals so much of the culture of life in Yemen in the late 20th century, and I am truly grateful to him for this gift of wisdom. Plus, what an adventure. He went through many wonderful travel dreams that many of us have thought of, but in reality they are probably just as dangerous or even more so than what happened to Hansen during his first trip to Yemen. I still focus on his description of the beauty of living in solitude after the shipwreck with his companions and, for a certain time, being free from the constraints and expectations of the outside world. How many of us have not dreamed of spending some time on a deserted island?What also resonated with me was the basis of his return to Yemen ten years after the shipwreck. Ever since reading "Into the Wild", I learned of the possible utility of burying valuables and coming back for them later. This was beneficial and successful for McCandless, but for Hansen it turned in to a adventure that by necessity gained him access to the colorful spectrum of Yemeni culture that could only be experienced by a "Westerner" years ago, and even then it was fraught with difficulty.This was the second book I have read by Hansen and I am truly impressed and fulfilled by the way he creates the narrative. This book is a beautiful and brilliantly unique journey and it was amazing to experience it through his eyes, ears and spirit.

"Khat ... also known as qat, gat, chat, and miraa ... is a flowering plant native to tropical East Africa and the Arabian Peninsula... Khat contains the alkaloid cathinone, an amphetamine-like stimulant which causes excitement and euphoria... Traditionally, khat has been used as a socializing drug, and this is still very much the case in Yemen where khat-chewing is predominantly, although not exclusively, a male habit... Khat consumption induces mild euphoria and excitement. Individuals become very talkative under the influence of the drug and may appear to be unrealistic and emotionally unstable. Khat can induce manic behaviors and hyperactivity... A recent British study found khat to be much less dangerous than tobacco or alcohol." - from WikipediaPeripatetic scribblers wander to such obvious destinations as Italy, France, Greece, China, India, Australia, the Amazon, or Alaska, then write a book to tell the rest of us vegetables all about it. Here in MOTORING WITH MOHAMMED, accomplished travel writer Eric Hansen immerses the reader in North Yemen. (Where, you say?) North Yemen squatted next to the Red Sea just to the south of southwest Saudi Arabia, and joined with South Yemen in 1990 to become the Republic of Yemen.Hansen's narrative is served up in two parts. Well, three, actually. The first takes place in 1978 when, after a 7-year period of wandering in other backwaters, the author is shipwrecked in the yacht "Clea", on which he was part of a five-person crew, on the uninhabited North Yemen island of Uqban. The first four chapters describe this experience, during which, for safekeeping, he buried on the island the wrapped journals of his previous adventures. The trouble is, he forgot to take them along when he and his companions were eventually rescued after fourteen days.The book's second part - thirteen chapters - takes place during a ten-week period a decade later when Hansen returns to North Yemen to retrieve his cached journals. Unbeknownst to him, however, is that Uqban Island lay in a security zone virtually inaccessible to foreigners. This fact becomes frustratingly clear as he unsuccessfully conspires with local help to cross the twenty miles of water separating the mainland from the island. Meanwhile, he cools his heels exploring, and falling in love with, much of the rest of the country. It's this developing love affair with North Yemen that's the basis for most of MOTORING WITH MOHAMMED.Whether he's tiptoeing across a precarious slope in the interior mountains, or witnessing the execution of a murderer, or participating in a communal qat chew, or sweating in a bathhouse, or feasting on stewed sheep's heads, Eric has a talent for observing the details that enrich the subsequent tale:"There is a trick to cracking open the skulls. You place the thumb of one hand in an eye socket (with the eyeball still intact), and span the skull and grip the roof of the mouth with the fingers. The other hand grasps the lower jaw. A sharp twisting motion is accompanied by a sickening snap and a popping sound. When done properly, the slippery skull and jawbone come away in two pieces. Then you prise open the cranium." (Happily, this passage refers to the feast, not the execution.)As the eighteenth and last chapter reveals, the author made the fortuitous acquaintance of the Yemeni ambassador to the United States at a Washington, D.C. photo exhibit of his nation's architecture eight months after the former returned to America sans journals. In the Middle East especially, it's all about whom you know. Thus, five months after that, Eric, shovel in hand, is sloshing through the Yemeni surf to a "fishing boat that smelled of rancid shark oil and pureed dates", which, Allah willing, can convey him and an agent of the National Security Police across the sea to Uqban. Truly, as the title of this chapter implies, "It was written."I shall most certainly never make it to Yemen. Yes, researching "San'a", the capital of Yemen, on the Web does almost compel me to visit on a whim. But, being married, my own happy-go-lucky journeying days are over. Besides, Yemen seems at times to be, um, a bit too raw. But, through Hansen's eyes and wonderfully evocative prose, I'm taken there in fine style, and that's what a five-star travel essay is all about.

I second the views of several reviewers that this is one of the best travel books they've ever read. Hansen takes us through Yemen as if we were riding (or sailing) with him. I never gave much thought to or knew much about Yemen but, thanks to Hansen, I have a new and positive view of it. His willingness to get out and experience many facets of this country enriches his descriptions. His good humor and sensitivity to its people are gratifying. But this is more than just a travelogue. Hansen's quest for his buried notebooks is a compelling story in itself. That plot and this venue combine to make this an irresistible and meritorious book. I look forward to reading more from this intrepid and gifted writer.

I read this book nearly at one sitting, literally sitting, up in bed one night when I should have been sleeping. Four or five times I awakened my husband, shaking the bed with my laughter, especially when Mohammed moved a sheep into the back seat of his taxi for the next five days, saying, "The sheep won't mind."Eric Hansen has scored with this book, and I've recommended it to probably 40 people and given it as a gift to 5-6.Read it and enjoy in - on many levels.

The author has written an engaging, entertaining, beautifully discriptive book of Yemen. I visited Sana'a about 15 years ago and his book really hits the mark. I particularly enjoy how Mr. Hansen captures the culture and attitudes of the Yemen. He knows that that that culture is 180 degrees from Western culture and he treats Yemeni religion, customs and attitudes with respect and openness - yet does not patronize as do many other travel books.His writing is witting, self-deprecating and honest - completely enjoyable.

Jens Müller was born in Koblenz, Germany, in 1982 and studied graphic design. Taschen does it again with another solid compendium of the visually striking and often sublimely subtle world of ad media and design. Both volume 1 and now 2 are excellent for following the evolution of some truly genius designs, and how each period within the last century really had some game changing, and often radical ideas about getting a message across and nearly universally understood.If an item appears to be so simple that anyone could have come up with it; these books say "then why haven't they?" There would definitely be more volumes if it were the case.

From the content to the quality of the printing. I bought both volumes for my kid, who’s studying graphic design.

At last, the second volume to Taschen's in-depth look at graphic design. This edition covers the years from 1960 to 2017 with 3500 images (2500 in volume one) and the format is the same as the first book. Each decade has a brief introduction then an illustrated timeline spread followed by the graphics. The range of material is wide, obviously all kinds of printed material but also paper currency, stamps, film credits, packaging, logos, signage, and a feature I particularly liked: spreads devoted to a single subject, mostly this is designers from around the world with samples of their work but also, for example, city branding, pc icons, early web pages, 3D logos, there are seventy-eight of these single item spreads.This book covers the introduction of computer design software and there's an obvious shift from the early nineties onwards with graphics revealing a much more fluid look as designers could do anything they liked with just a few keystrokes. The previous hundred years or so of design discipline created by the limitations of process work and printing evaporated remarkably quickly so that now, visually, anything goes.The two volumes tip the scales at eight kilos with a big page size of thirty-seven centimetres by twenty-four, beautifully laid out and printed on a reasonable matt art. Two books with six thousand illustrations, it's a remarkably creative look.

I also own Volume 1 and this one is equally wonderful. It's also huge and quite heavy, unsurprisingly - and as with the other volume, it's filled with beautiful graphics. The printing process and the selection are again really great.

The lion's share of Great War accounts I've read seem to be from the English or the German side. Occasionally there are some French accounts thrown in (i.e. Barbusse's "Under Fire") but for the most part (I don't know why) the French soldiers are usually treated as distant, somehow at a remove from a lot of the actions and campaigns that took place between Tom and Jerry.Barthas's account of the life of a "poilu" (I believe it literally translates as something like "hairy one" but means "grunt") is the firsthand account of a cooper-turned corporal, who reluctantly but steadfastly fought for several years straight in the charnel house that was Europe in the First World War. Like Herbert Sulzbach ("With the German Guns") it's a miracle that Barthes even lived long enough to write the diary entries that comprise this book. And like Ernst Junger ("Copse 125," "Storms of Steel" et. al.) Barthas' descriptions of battle are at once of an unquestionable veracity (to paraphrase Gide on Junger) and yet somehow achieve the tenor of ghastly, surrealistic poetry. Some of the entries are truly breathtaking to read.That said, I would be lying if I said I didn't find some of the book to be a slog. Because the French (unlike the Germans) didn't fight primarily with units comprised of men they knew from their towns and villages, and because they were constantly shifted, it is hard to get a bead on any of the other characters in Barthas' orbit. Yes, this is a series of diary entries, which makes it more an interior rumination rather than a traditional narrative, but the men with whom Barthas shares the trenches congeal into one mass of undifferentiated ciphers. The old saying is that war is long stretches of boredom punctuated by short bursts of sheer terror, and it's certainly true in this book as Barthas marches, camps, prepares for a fight that doesn't occur, and then marches off again. Also, I don't fault any man for having strong political convictions (especially when they've been born out by such a mountain of empirical evidence in the form of what essentially was state-sanctioned genocide), but the relentless didactic tone (Barthas was a socialist) sometimes becomes a bit wearing. It is, in its own way, as rigid, reflexive, and blinkered as unbridled and unthinking patriotism.All that said, there's no disputing that this is an important book, a candid and harrowing piece of history from an enlisted Frenchman, a species from whom we who are curious about the Great War haven't heard nearly enough.

I have waited many years for this work to be published in English. I served in the Verdun region for the years 1955-1956 at the Etain-Rouvres AB as part of the NATO buildup across Europe. My literary French is very weak and Edward M. Strauss has done a splendid job of French/English conversion.I knew many of the veterans of the battle and they helped us young military guys with the maps and the terrible feeling of being under fire while suffering from fever, hunger, thirst and terror.Armies are not all the same. This is the French Army of 1914-1918. Military folks! Do not miss out on this epoch work of an intelligent Poilu, Cpl. Louis Barthas who carefully recorded life in the garrison and trenches during those years.

Poilu is best understood not as a war book, but as a narrative explaining how and why people willingly march to their own slaughter at the bidding of sadistic, power-mad commanders who obviously care nothing whatever for them. In that sense, the book is about human psychology, and has universal import. It is one of the very few narratives written by an ordinary soldier, whose plight, as the author says, is simply unknowable to their officers. Barthas, a self-professed socialist, internationalist, and pacifist, willingly obeys orders he fully understands are insane and murderous, issued by people he views with incandescent hatred and contempt. Almost all his friends die senselessly, even assuming the justness of the war itself [which the author does not]. Not only are soldiers sent in heaps to almost certain death; they also suffer constant torture and abuse by haughty officers who appropriate the best food and most comfortable quarters for themselves while forcing their men to freeze and starve. Death and mutilation seem also the least of the common soldiers' worries. At every lull in the carnage, brutal officers force their charges to endure meaningless, degrading, and unending drudgery; shivering, starving, manure-covered and lice-infected poilu suffer humiliating marches, parades, and drills to fulfill the sadistic pleasures of their superiors, who sacrifice legions for their own glory and promotion. How do they get away with this? Why do the victims obey? Why do commoners march into certain mutilation or death rather than shoot those who sacrifice them? This question is one of the most important faced by our species; answering it explains, if not everything, than almost everything. Theoretical discussions of this issue abound; this narrative puts us in the place of one who survived and let's us comprehend his thoughts and emotions. Laid bare are the mechanisms of totalitarian control not only over the bodies, but the hearts, minds, and souls of the victims--which is almost all of us who are asked or allowed to serve. Coincidentally, I read this just after finishing *Seductive Poison*, a survivor's account of life [and death] with Peoples Temple, culminating in the mass murder/suicide of over 900 devoted followers in Jonestown. Jim Jones is widely considered a pathological cult leader; yet Deborah Layton and hundreds of other sane and idealistic persons voluntarily adjusted themselves to his rule, and suffered humiliation, privation, and death in fulfilling his commands. The methods of social control, the myriads of ways in which followers accustom themselves in participating in great atrocities [including those inflicted on themselves], even as they extenuate, justify, and deny to the grave, are the same in murder/suicide cults public and private--in national armies as well as Jonestown in Guinea or the Brach Davidian compound at Waco. Understanding the armed forces of nations as officially-sanctioned murder/suicide cults is essential for us to recognize their true natures.

The book REALLY describes war as seen through the eyes of a French soldier. Very detailed and moving. I'm about halfway through and wanted to review it as soon as possible. It described events as if you were there. There are some surprising aspects, such as fraternization with the enemy troops, that was more common than previously known. I did not realize how close the front lines were to the areas that the troops used to rest (if you can call it that). A matter of meters. The poilu (slang for the French ground troops or infantry from the rural areas of southern France) were sacrificed in a war that was horrific at best. A reluctant corporal, Louis Berthas was diligent in his writings and left us a treasure. He was well read, even though he was only a barrelmaker, and his compatriots wanted to make sure he told their tale. It is amazing his notebooks survived. The photos of the notebooks are amazing. I highly recommend this book.
