The subtitle of this book says it all: Connecting with God through prayer, wisdom, and silence. Restoring, or regaining connection with the Father is vital for our spiritual health. Nouwen expounds on the necessary ingredients for connecting with God. Those vital disciplines include: solitude, silence, and prayer.He calls solitude the “furnace of transformation.” It is a place of great struggle and great encounter; “the struggle against the compulsions of the false self, and the encounter with the loving God who offered himself as the substance of the new self” (16). The significance of solitude is this is the place where we remove all the entanglements we have come to rely on to make it through the day, or through life’s journey. All of us have this “false self” that drives our attitudes and behaviors. And it is this false self solitude deals with. Solitude reminds us “the goal of our life is not people. It is God. Only in him shall we find the rest we seek” (32).Silence is the actual component of solitude, in fact, it is the key that makes solitude a reality. Nouwen offers, “silence is solitude practiced in action.” In silence, our words both written and spoken, regain their creative power. There is a guarding of the tongue we don’t experience in non-stop community and communication. Silence becomes a purification of sorts. In community, which represents another spiritual discipline, words lose their power and significance. Silence teaches us to return to the power of God’s words and the impact they have on our lives. In silence we are no longer in competition for our words, but desperate for God’s word. The essence of silence is that it “helps us to keep our mind and heart anchored in the future world and allows us to speak from there a creative and re-creative word to the present world” (59).Both solitude and silence set the table for a deeper, even more vital connection with God through prayer. Solitude is not about being alone, but being alone with God. Silence is not the absence of words, but is a way of listening to God. The crisis of prayer is that our minds are filled with many ideas of God, yet our hearts remain distant. The challenge here is real prayer comes from the heart. In prayer we re-connect with the God by identifying what is essential, the kingdom of God. Instead of focusing on the thoughts that flood through our minds, we focus on hidden reality of the kingdom of God. Where the kingdom of God is, there is life and freedom and power. Therefore, we hide nothing because we come face to face with God’s mercy.Solitude, Silence, and Prayer help us remain connected to the Father, and therefore useful for ministry. We are less likely to say to a person in need, “I’ll be praying for you.” We will listen to the Holy Spirit, and in that place of community with people we will say, “Let’s pray right now.” We are more apt to bring the rest that comes from these disciplines into our everyday lives.The obvious challenge with these disciplines is taking the steps to get there. Whether it is because we are desperate, burnt out, or simply sensing the need for renewal; there is hope for renewed or restored connection with the Father.

Solitude, silence and prayer.I purchased this book having spent a number of months seeking to do more of all 3. For too long I've thought communing with God was a reflection of how many experiences I have of Him, whatever form they may take. However, I no longer seek the experiences OF Him rather to experience Him.Nouwen's reflections of the "Desert Fathers" ( who lived in the Egyptian desert during the 4th and 5th centuries) lifestyle are a wonderful summary of how we can experience more of Him.At times it was a challenging read as I couldn't immediately grasp some of the concepts presented, however, sometimes we need to allow ourselves to soak in new ideas so they can in-fill us over time. However, these few words are a great summary of the essence of the book:"The Desert Fathers did not think of solitude as being alone, but as being alone with God. They did not think of silence as not speaking, but as listening to God. Solitude and silence are the context within which prayer is practiced. Prayer is standing in the presence of God with the mind in the heart."I especially like a book that leaves me unsatisfied in a good way. It has made me thirsty for more. Especially to better understand how to pray with my mind in my heart.It's sub-100 pages in length but allow time for the few words to distill in your heart.

I just finished this book and want to say it is a wonder book as it takes a look at your spiritual life. The book deals with the world in its darkness, hatred that is trying to take our joy. This book help you identify what is in your life and how to understand different stages of your development. The book is broken down into three categories and explain each in detail. This is a wonderful book in helping you on your spiritual journal and an excellent reference book to be read over again.

I didn't realize that when I purchase this book it was geared towards the Christian Clergy. But there were so many profound and beautiful truths in these writings, it really didn't matter to me. I got a great deal out of this book and would highly recommend it regardless of your "religious" position or practice. In the end, I don't really think it matters as these truths cross all boundaries.

Nouwen definitely sees the issues of modern life -- our frenetic pace, our infatuation with material things, our narcissistic tendencies.His book, The Way of the Heart, is a respite from all our distractions by opening up the spirituality of the Desert Fathers and Mother for our generations. He leads one through the basic spirituality of the Desert and breaks it down into three components -- solitude, silence, and prayer. He doesn't assume that any of us can fully step away from our lives as he didn't. So he gives some concrete ideas for each of us to use to be able to listen to God by pulling ourselves away from the noise, being silent with God, and entering contemplative prayer.I highly recommend this book. It is short enough to read multiple times. My book is now highly underlined and commented in as it sparked many thoughts as I read it.

My goodness! Short, but hits you at your soul!I love how JP Moreland suggests reading anything of Nouwen: Read it slowly. In as few words as possible, Nouwen packs a punch that leaves marks on your soul. If you read it too fast, you'll miss so much of the depth. This is one of those rare books that you'll want to read over and over again in your devotionals.

Being a fairly prolific knitter, and a collector of lace patterns I sometimes find that "new" pattern books either contain patterns that I already own, are so similar to ones I already have that they are almost indistinguishable, or are sometimes available free from the yarn company. And this is true of Lace One-Skein Wonders. Having said that, here is what I like about this book:1) Having all these patterns in one easy accessible place is great. I can grab this one book and head to the yarn store.2) Lace One Skein Wonders will solve several of my "left over" stash dilemmas. One skein of "this or that" lace weight yarn rarely gets you anywhere. I've already spotted several designs that use yarn already hanging out in my stash.3) This book has nice sections of cowls and home accessories in lace designs - which are less well covered in my other lace knitting pattern books.If you enjoyed the previous One Skein Wonders books, this one will fit right in. If you are new to lace knitting, this book is a very good choice. There are simple beginner patterns, and more intriguing complex patterns. But whatever you choose, you'll only be investing in one skein. That can mean $$ if you are using alpaca, silk or cashmere.All in all, this is a keeper, and I'll be making a dozen or more designs from this book.

I have all the One-Skein Wonders books. I love knitting or crocheting lace; there are only 3 crochet patterns in the whole book but lots of lace projects to choose from using very little yarn. Like the other books, there are colored photos of each project. The instructions are clear and most of the patterns also have a chart, which I like. I have made a few patterns in the book and although I didn't find any errors in those, there are a few in other patterns. Go to Storey Publishing: Corrections, Lace One-Skein Wonders to find the errata in the book.This is a great way to use up your yarn stash! Most knitting or crochet books only have a few patterns and with 101 in this (and all the One-Skein Wonder books) there's plenty to choose from. It's a huge 303 page book and has an Appendix that explains all the different stitches and has abbreviations for them along with a symbol key for using charts and an Index so you can look up every project and every stitch.So far I have made the Raindrops Scarf (photo of blue scarf; looks green), Broomstick Lace Scarf - my first broomstick lace project and was kinda fun (photo of dark purple scarf), the Pitched Cowel (multicolored photo), and the Simply Sweet Shawl - the only crocheted shawl in the book (photo of blue shawl hanging; looks green).

I saw a scarf/shawl on Ravelry that I wanted to make from this book. It's a nice book, but a bit deceiving as the "one skein" doesn't necessarily mean "one small skein." However, the patterns are written for a variety of yarn weights, not just for lace and fingering weights. I was disappointed that the pattern I want to knit has a chart only. I like to knit from written instructions so I'll have to translate the chart. There is a variety of pattern types and levels. I'm glad, though, that I bought it used as I would have been disappointed in it at full price.

If you are a beginner to intermediate knitter some of the patterns and special lace stitches are lacking in specific stitch instructions and explanations of the knitting/stitch abbreviations. Case in point, the very lovely rosy, red shawl on the book's cover has a very special lace stitch which I had to page thru the entire book to find. I am an intermediate lace knitter and have many lace projects under my belt. Most of these patterns are for at least intermediate to advanced/experienced knitters. If you are an adventurous advanced beginner and don't mind taking out mistakes and searching the web and YouTube for instructions you can happily knit the projects from this book. I personally like most of the patterns/projects very much and after I am finished with my Spring client knitting orders I will knit several projects from this book!! I love the fact that these lace knitting projects only use 1 to 2 skeins of yarn.

A huge amount of projects to make you want to grab your needles, not just socks, lace everything. The patterns rate from simplistic and quick to intermediate, I saw no super difficult projects. The knit for kids section has adorable knits for baby through toddler from head to toe. The fingerless glove pattern on page 47 is addicting, (only 109 yards of yarn needed) I made 10 pair! The For the Home section is skimpy, adorable patterns none the less, 146 yards for an adorable wine bottle cozy, need I say more? 71 designers contributed to this book, you are getting variety, quantity and quality, not to mention it is a great stash buster book.

I don't usually like these one-skein books because the patterns are usually too simple and mundane. This book, however, surprised me as the patterns are interesting, lacey, lovely. The photography is very good so you can see what the finished product is really supposed to look like. I haven't had the chance to use the patterns yet but they look complete to me. The book is divided into sections: From head to toe,Knits for kids, It's a wrap, Lacy accessories and For the home. The patterns are designed by a variety of designers so there is a variety of skills, ideas, yarns, stitches, techniques etc. In the back of the book are pages of instructions of the techniques in case you need review or instruction. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves knitting lace because it would keep you busy for months and months - 101 patterns in all. WOW!

Lace. Beautiful, feminine, nearly ethereal, lace is an amazing result in knitting. First time I knitted something lace, my husband asked me "how can you do that?" He'd seen me knit for many, many years.. And, I'll admit, it took me many years to try to knit lace, but it is well worth it and very doable and this book has wonderful lace patterns in everything from socks, hats, leg warmers, baby sweaters, and cowls, to baby blankets, shawls, capes, and table mats. This is an amazing collection and I'm very pleased with this purchase. I think you would be to.

Excellent choice of trails to feature, nice color photos accompanying the very good descriptions that together give a good feel for what to expect. Especially good reference for dog owners -- although not all featured trails allow dogs, which ones do or don't is clearly detailed.

I am using it twice a month for my hikes with my dog. I love it.
