I must admit that I purchased this book because of Peter Sis. I felt that if he was involved with this project, it would be very creative , as well as first class; I was not disappointed. I am a retired Media Specialist , and I am happy to add this short story to my home library. I love Amazon; their service is the best! Everything that I have ever ordered has arrived promptly, and is always packaged the best - even if it is only one soft cover "Fancy Nancy" book for my granddaughter! Sometimes they deliver on Sunday afternoons; also, I know that the books that I order are always in pristine condition!

This is an xcellent little fable! It says so much in such few words. Some great thoughts I derived from this tale are: a child's prospective of the element of Time, of how women should band together through mutual experiences and how the only way to really know oneself is to step outside of yourself. I believe young and old would profit from Jose Saramago's little story.

Very introspective tale. Dreamy... raised from the ground was his other superb book about Portugal and its peasant history developed

A simple and wonderful story. You read in 30 min, it stays with you forever.

The beauty of this book is truly its simplicity. Very short, very easy to read. A bit tricky with punctuation. There are no quotation marks and few periods and paragraph breaks. I read it in less than an hour and felt very good after. It has an adorable brand of humor and a deep meaning at the end. It feels a bit like watching a Pixar short. :)

I have read and enjoyed a couple of Saramago books already and am well into a third. I took time out to read this small, illustrated, 51-page book. I wasn't paying attention to anything but the price and the author when I ordered it. I guess Jose Saramago isn't in the habit of writing short stories otherwise his publisher could just as easily have waited to include it in his next collection. The story, as I understood it, is that of a man who is searching for a new start, a new world. He doesn't seem to express any objections to his present world, he just wants a boat so he can go find an unknown island. If I try to tell too much more of the plot, I'll run the risk of this review being longer than the "book". In the end, I understood the plot to mean that often it is the journey, rather than the destination that matters. The determination is greater than the result. This is a nice enough story but it doesn't warrent its' own issuance. I mean, it isn't THAT good. I'll read more of Saramago and I'll be glad to sing his praises many times, I'm sure. I'll just pay a little more attention to what I'm ordering in the future.

A 10 minute read that left me scratching my head.

Wonderful little book.

Here is a book for a more intelligent reader. I don’t mean to condescend but I am going to offend regardless. There’s a lot more than just multiple characters in which the light readers of boy-wants-girl girl-wants-boy will get lost. There’s politics, religion, strategy, and the occult. The complexity of this book extends well beyond the complications of its multiple characters. The book is smart; the plot is tight. This was no fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants achievement. It’s obvious (to me anyway) the plot was planned in advance and then strictly adhered to. Events and characters are foreshadowed from the start and they come together in an elegant way by the end. This is an engaging and complex book, and it is well worth reading if you’re looking for more than mind fluff.

I normally don't write reviews because, while I read A LOT, I'm too ambivalent to most of what I read. But, there is that rare gem that stands out amongst the rest, and this is one of them! What do I like about this book:I like that it's complex. There is politics, religion, drugs, occult. It goes from single characters to different governments and manages to keep it all flowing forward. The world building is awesome. It builds the complexity of the story rather than overwhelming it. He lets you learn about it in the periphery rather than, “Here's My World A-B-C.”I like that it's not all sunshine and rainbows. The story gets quite dark. Drugs, mental breakdown, violence. The author and the characters do not shy away from what happens and/or what needs to happen. While it's clear that there should be a 2nd book coming out, this book makes it clear that the ending will NOT be “happily ever after.”I like that it's not fluff. This book does require intelligence to read. But, it's not like reading a stuffy classic. The mental requirements are for keeping up with the intricate and complex plot, not for keeping up with the prose style. While this will turn off a lot of people, for those of you that do read it, you will not be disappointed. What I don't like:It's clear that there is more to the story; it doesn't end in a cliffhanger, but the story is definitely not done. However, there is not a 2nd book, and there is no indication of if/when there will be a 2nd book. The author page for T Mountebank makes me nervous. The author clearly wants to remain anonymous (with a photo that looks like from the 20's and a name like Mountebank...)I have read a few of the reviews that say this is translated from Russian, so hopefully they will translate the next one soon! I would really like to see what happens!!!

For those that love being lost in another world for hours on end, the 450 pages of Sister Sable provide the perfect setting. It starts with those ominous opening lines: “General Berringer remembers the night he could have ended it."And from there we are drawn into the treacherous world of Sister Sable, a nun on the run not only from her own religious order, but also from the King’s Army, his soldiers and spies, and his spymaster, Catherine, who has a mind so full of schemes there’s no room for compassion. There is an extremely high level of competency to each character, so the action is intelligent. The plans-within-plans are plausible, clever, and tricky enough to impress even the most jaded readers of espionage. The book is driven by both the poetic language and the action based conflict, but it works because of the characters (they are all so exquisitely crafted for their roles) and the very tight plot.I give it 5 stars because after all that it also lingers in my mind like a shadowy illusion. I cannot seem to move on to another book. Nothing feels right now.So, well done, Mountebank, you have successfully managed to shatter my mind as well.

I've had this book on my wish list for a while now and just got around to buying it. Boy should I have read this sooner! Sable is no Cinderella, that's for sure. This is one kick ass queen. Ok so yes, she's 'touched' as they say down south, but her madness only adds to her complex layers. This book is very well written. Parts of it flow like poetry in spite of the blood and gore and violence that the 'poetry' is describing. As always, when politics, religion and love are thrown together, you know you're in for a roller coaster ride. There are echoes of Frank Herbert's Bene Gesserit sisterhood from Dune as well as Sun Tzu's Art of War.Sable tries her best to protect her king, and sacrifices much to do it, but it never seems to be enough. Everywhere she turns there is betrayal and at times it is unclear if she is playing games or the one being played. Then the book ends abruptly! Um, where's book two?

For someone who does not like fantasy and also not a fan of a lot of science fiction, this book was a pleasant surprise. It was intelligent, filled with interesting characters who were fully rounded, and themes that resonate in our world today. Add to that some excellent writing and you've got a great read. I liked it so much, I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series. It was a surprise, how much I liked this book and would definitely recommend.

I totally loved this book ... I had been searching and searching for a book that really kept me involved. I am so glad I ran across this one .. because it did exactly that. The cover caught my eye and the book caught my attention .. from the beginning to the end .. needless to say I didn't realize that the book had recently came out .. so my horror was boundless when I could not find the next book in the series. I am guessing this is the authors first book because I cannot find anything else by T. Mountebank... if I am wrong, please let me know.

The story was well written and well researched. Everybody had a certain ability they were good at and their own personality. The book was written for several different view points and only confused me once, when 2 people were talking about the same thing one flowing into the other I just missed the transition marks(my mistake). I think Jules is my favorite character in the book. A boy who lost his parents at the age of fourteen in a murder robbery and spent the next 9 years of his life learning things like parkor, akido, and a few different languages, and fine tuning his mind and body to retrieve a bracelet that was taken from his mother. That pursuit led him to a group of people that locate lost items and return them to who they belong to, and a man looking for a cure for his sickness and power. Jules becomes an important piece to figuring out a puzzle connected to the bracelet taken from his mom 9 years ago.

Do you like bigger than life, epic action/adventures? If yes, then you may have found the right book in the Tomb of Aradia. It has everything you could ask for. A young, dashing protagonist, Jules, who’s a world-class, parkour practitioner, even calculating complex maneuvers on the fly (like the length of a bungee cord needed to land softly – imagine what happens if you make a mistake). He also boasts encyclopedic knowledge over an immense range of topics. The story boasts buried cities and ancient civilizations with strange, perhaps mystical powers. You’ll also find globe-trotting action from Old Town Prague to a chateau in France to the far reaches of Mongolia. It has scenes that will bring to mind movies from Indiana Jones to James Bond. But even though it has all the elements of a spell-binding, epic adventure, their implementation hurt the pace, making the book somewhat of an epic read. The story centers around Julian Siebeko (Jules), a young, black freelance treasure hunter. But if you have a stereotype for that profession, I’d guess he’s nothing like it. He’s impatient, almost hostile toward the thoughts and plans of others, yet he constantly ends up in trouble himself. He repetitively changes loyalties among three competing factors – a group of unorthodox archaeologists, a ruthless billionaire, and the head curator of the British royal family. Then, he’s forced to seek help from one of the others to extricate himself. He’s also driven by an insatiable urge to retrieve a bangle stolen from his dying mother, but when he secures it, he just finds other troubles. True, the book sees Jules maturing, but the ‘go your own way, then get help’ routine gets repeated too frequently. Additionally, some things about his character are simply inexplicable. For such an extremely well-read and intelligent individual, he talks like he never finished 3rd grade (“I ain’t a hacker on the level you people play by, but I do what I gotta.”). Sure, every character needs their own voice, but this one makes no sense and seems degrading. The settings, while far-flung and in some cases exotic, are not used well. In general, the action could have occurred anywhere from rural Montana to the boroughs of New York. The opening scene, for example, is set in Old Town Prague, but the ‘landmark’ that’s mentioned is a “fried chicken place.” Sure, there are KFCs in Old Town, but that’s hardly symbolic of a city brimming with incredible architecture. And later in Rome, they “…whizzed by the fountain of the Piazza Navona,” a place that’s usually so crowded it’s difficult to walk. The setting descriptions didn’t do anything to create an image. So, overall, the Tomb of Aradia has all the elements of a pulse-pounding, epic action/adventure. Unfortunately, I labored a bit watching Jules complete savant-like analyses and perform world-class physical feats, then repeat his mistakes while explaining himself using inexplicably poor language.

I tried this book because it was part of Kndle Scout and I really enjoyed it. It was fast paced with several twists making for a fast read. The premise is that there exists a secret organization (for all you conspiracy theorists) that seeks to recover lost artifacts, usually for their legitimate "owners". I especially liked the historical references and the character development. However, I think that this character development was somewhat on sided, spending much more time delving into Jules' obsession and his lack of social skills while other team members and even the opposition are less well developed. This is Book 1 so I expect to see a series. The epilog starts with the next expedition which tries to salvage some knowledge and artifacts lost in this book. The author provides a few reference notes to help differentiate historical fact from his " creativity". I would recommend this book/series for those interested in ancient civilization, either real or imaginary and the mixing of fact with some creative speculation.

Welcome to L.O.R.I., that's Lost Origins Recovery Institute.Personnel include:Toby - English, historian, former curator of Windsor CastleDan - American, ex-military - Army RangerCharlie - English, ex-military, techieHarpal - English, Indian, undercover agent, recon expertBridget - American, researcher, analyst, linguistand Jules - American, artifact retriever, expert in many disciplines, remembers everything he hears and sees, a loner who may or may not join L.O.R.I.They all join in a multinational journey in search of a bangle/bracelet that was stolen from Jules' mother when he was a boy. He has spent his life since then searching for this link to his mother after both parents were killed during the robbery.I enjoyed this book immensely after nominating it in the Amazon Scout program. There are hints of past adventures of the L.O.R.I. group from before they met Jules. The epilog sets the stage for a sequel beginning shortly after this ending. I'll be waiting for it.

Jules is on a global-trotting quest to recover his mother’s Arcadia bangle. A personality disorder, as portrayed in lists, categories, and personal conduct codes, makes him an interesting character. He connects with LORI, an unconventional group of archeologists. The members have good hearts but questionable methods that keep the story interesting. There is a bit of myth mingled with enhanced history which might disturb some readers, particularly one incident, but just remember it is fiction—and don’t quote anything unless you know the facts. The book is a bit long but it flows well and holds your attention.
