"This translation offers a fresh and vital encounter with Thomas More’s Utopia for a twenty-first century audience."—Elizabeth McCutcheon, Utopian Studies "Clarence H. Miller’s fine translation tracks the supple variations of More’s Latin with unmatched precision, and his Introduction and notes are masterly. Jerry Harp’s new Afterword adroitly places More’s wonderful little book into its broader contexts in intellectual history."―George M. Logan, author of The Meaning of More’s “Utopia”"Sir Thomas More's Utopia is not merely one of the foundational texts of western culture, but also a book whose most fundamental concerns are as urgent now as they were in 1516 when it was written. Clarence H. Miller's wonderful translation of More's classic is now happily once again available to readers. This is the English edition that best captures the tone and texture of More's original Latin, and its notes and introduction, along with the lively afterward by Jerry Harp, graciously supply exactly the kinds of help a modern reader might desire."—David Scott Kastan, George M. This was simply a reading of Thomas More's classic "Utopia," which around More's time caused quite a stir in the literary and political worlds. Today it remains an important part of English literature and makes thought-provoking comments on political and societal structures. I'm currently undertaking a personal goal of re-introducing myself to the classics I read in high school/college, only now I have the time needed to properly ingest and appreciate them at my leisure.Douglas McDonald beautifully narrates More's complex descriptions and explanations in such a way that kept me focused and interested. I would be delighted to hear more from him in the future. This audiobook was provided to me for free in exchange for my unbiased review. Many thanks for the opportunity!

Thomas More lived from 1477 to 1535. He was convicted of treason and beheaded in 1535 for refusing to accept King Henry VIII as head of the Church of England. Utopia, written in Latin, was published in 1516. It was translated to English by Ralph Robinson in 1551. The translation by Clarence Miller was published by Yale University Press in 2001. [This review is based on the Miller translation.]The text of Utopia is in two books. Book 1 was written after Book 2. It is in Book 2 that the society of the place named `Utopia' is described by a traveler, Raphael Hythloday, who through his travels had lived there for a time and has returned to England to report on what he learned. Book 1 is a lead-in to Book 2 and was probably intended to establish interest in the subject of Book 2. The narrative form of Book 1 is a conversation of Hythloday with Thomas More and Peter Giles, and of Book 2 the form is a monologue by Hythloday.Hythloday, speaking in Book 1, agrees with Plato and the people of Utopia that "as long as everyone has his own property, there is no hope of curing them and putting society back into good condition." (48) More disagrees and believes, along with Aristotle and Aquinas, "that no one can live comfortably where everything is held in common. For how can there be any abundance of goods when everyone stops working because he is no longer motivated by making a profit, and grows lazy because he relies on the labors of others." (48)These statements occur near the end of Book 1, which began, after some preliminaries, with a conversation about the justice of the death penalty for theft. (In an endnote on page 145, Miller tells of a report from 1587 that "in the reign of Henry VIII alone 72,000 thieves and vagabonds were hanged.") Hythloday believes that theft is a necessary consequence of personal property. Unstated but evident is that he believes also that personal property is not only a sufficient condition for theft (which makes theft a necessary consequence of it), but also a necessary condition for theft (which makes theft contingent upon it). Removing personal property, then, removes the possibility of theft, he believes: with the unexamined assumption that you cannot steal what you already own in common with everyone else. But of course you can: you take it and keep it for yourself so no one else can use it, taking what belongs to everyone, and not sharing it with anyone. Only the coercion of others, through established law or otherwise, can alter this. But then you are back to the existence of theft and social restraints to admonish and respond to it.In Book 2 Raphael Hythloday describes Utopia. The word `Raphael' means "God's healer", and the word `hythloday', from Greek, means "peddler of nonsense". The word `utopia' is a Greek pun that means both "good place" and "no place". If Hythloday is speaking nonsense motivated by the deepest moral compassion, where is the nonsense? Is Utopia a good place that is no place, or is it no place that is a good place? (The second reading can mean it is not a place that is a good place.)"From my observation and experience of all the flourishing nations everywhere, what is taking place, so help me God, is nothing but a conspiracy of the rich, as it were, who look out for themselves under the pretext of serving the commonwealth." (132)Outside of Utopia, money is the cause of endless trouble. In Utopia, "once the use of money was abolished, and together with it all greed for it, what a mass of troubles was cut away, what a crop of crimes was pulled up by the roots! Is there anyone who does not know that fraud, theft, plunder, strife, turmoil, contention, rebellion, murder, treason, poisoning, crimes which are constantly punished but never held in check, would die away if money were eliminated?" (132)Utopia is a society under full and strict regimentation. Its culture is, in effect, nothing but what is a consequence of social regimentation. Nothing exists in the culture that is not a result of this pervasive social control. Utopians believe they do not live in a tyranny only because they accept and desire the collective regimentation under which they live. They are the perfect slaves.Utopians are ambivalent, in fact illogical if not morally arrogant, about killing for food or defense. They eat animals but "they do not allow their citizens to be accustomed to butchering animals" but rather have "bondsmen" do this because they believe that butchering animals for food "gradually eliminates compassion, the finest feeling of human nature." (68) Bondsmen are apparently immune to such a descent into moral corruption, or else they are bondsmen exactly because they are already morally degraded and so either immune to further corruption or they are beyond moral rectification, and therefore the moral consequences of killing for food cannot matter for their moral selves. So bondsmen who butcher animals either have no compassion, it having been gradually eliminated through butchering, or because their moral precondition, their qualification of moral impurity, includes diminished compassion from which their moral descent continues, or else they have compassion and, being bondsmen, they are somehow immune from the moral consequences of killing for food, either because of their moral deficiency or because bondsmen have a moral strength that the citizens of Utopia lack.Marriage is not allowed until age 18 for women and age 22 for men. Extramarital sex is a crime, and in the case of anyone married, the consequence of a second act of adultery is death. The method is not stated, nor who in Utopia administers capital justice, although it is likely to be a slave. (99)It is mainly (or only) the slaves who kill for the Utopians, but it did not require any killing to become a slave. In fact, "the most serious crimes" (unstated, but clearly not only murder) are punished by "servitude" (slavery). "If slaves are rebellious or unruly, then they are finally slaughtered like wild beasts that cannot be restrained by bars or chains." On the other hand, if they are "tamed by long suffering and show that they regret the sin more than the punishment, their servitude may be either mitigated or revoked, sometimes by the ruler's prerogative, sometimes by popular vote." (100)What happens to those slaves (bondsmen) who helped feed the citizens of Utopia by butchering animals for food and thus suffering the apparent moral consequence of diminished compassion is not stated. Perhaps Utopia uses only slaves gotten from outside the citizenry of Utopia for their necessary killing. Utopia has slaves captured in wars they fought and other "foreigners who have been condemned to death" which the Utopians "acquire [...] sometimes cheaply, more often gratis and take them away." Foreign slaves are kept "constantly at work" and in chains. (95) Utopia also has slaves who entered into slavery by choice. These are "poor, overworked drudges from other nations [...] who chose to be slaves among the Utopians." Such slaves can relinquish their slavery whenever they choose, but in doing so they leave Utopia, although they are not "sent away empty-handed." (96)Utopians do not fight their own wars if they can avoid it. Killing, although morally necessary, is morally degrading, so they hire mercenaries to defend Utopia. They do, however, train for war - men and women both - "so that they will not be incapable of fighting when circumstances require it". (105) They go to war reluctantly, and "do so only to defend their own territory, or to drive an invading enemy from the territory of their friends, or else, out of compassion and humanity, they use their forces to liberate a[n] oppressed people from tyranny and servitude." (105) Upon declaring war, they immediately offer enormous rewards for the assassination or capture of the enemy prince and others "responsible for plotting against the Utopians." (108)Utopians are tolerant of differing views on religion and "on no other subject are they more cautious about making rash pronouncements than on matters concerning religion." (122) However, they scorn unbelievers in any deity or afterlife, and "do not even include in the category of human beings" nor "count him as one of their citizens" if he "should sink so far below the dignity of human nature as to think that the soul dies with the body or that the world is ruled by mere chance and not by prudence." (119) "For who can doubt that someone who has nothing to fear but the law and no hope of anything beyond bodily existence would strive to evade the public laws of his country by secret chicanery or to break them by force in order to satisfy his own personal greed?" (119) "He is universally looked down on as a lazy and spineless character." (119) In fact, "a religious fear of the heavenly beings" is "the greatest and practically the only incitement to virtue." (127)There is a kind of state religion in Utopia which includes high priests and public worship. "They invoke God by no other name than Mythras, a name they all apply to the one divine nature, whatever it may be. No prayers are devised which everyone cannot say without offending his own denomination." (126) "When the priest [...] comes out of the sacristy, everyone immediately prostrates himself on the ground out of reverence; on all sides the silence is so profound that the spectacle itself inspires a certain fear, as if in the presence of some divinity." (128) Priests are held in such high esteem that "even if they commit a crime they are not subject to a public tribunal but are left to God and their own consciences. [...] For it is unlikely that someone who is the cream of the crop and is elevated to a position of such dignity only because of his virtue should degenerate into corruption and vice." (124)

Difficult to read - tiny tiny print with the lines really close together, quite an eye test. The writing itself was difficult to follow, a lot of punctuation errors and long, run-on sentences, but if this was a direct reprint of the original writing, then it's understandable.

Well, here goes.Thomas Moore created the term utopia through this work. It explores a fantastical society that has achieved a state of utopia, explaining every aspect of it and exploring what it means to be a utopia, and how one may be created. His utopian ideas were interesting , and some of the basis for one is in place in modern society. However, his utopia remains highly impractical because many of his ideas ru counter to the very nature of man and thus can neverbe put in place. His most important idea is his view on diminishing the value of gold and jewelry, and stands as the crux of his utopia. And coming from an era of slavery, it is interesting to see his views on its importance in a perfect society, though this of course is highly controversial.Overall, Utopia is an incredible and interesting work delving into what would be needed to create a perfect society of growth, peace and prosperit, though the answer is impossible to find.

The text of this book is classic, and so I don't need to review More's philosophy. But the book itself was deficient in terms of the print formatting. Page margins are ignored in this print to maximize print space, at the expense of visual ergonomics. The result is a frugal yet cost effective 70 pages, which could have been much better arranged.

I should preface by saying I've bought several "...For Dummies" books on various subjects and loved them all. This one was simply "OK". As far as giving a decent background on basic fundamentals of accounting and why you should do the things Quickbooks allows you to do, it's great. I guess I needed something even more remedial. Many of my various Quickbooks questions were answered simply by using Google as I couldn't find them within this book and I've read it cover to cover twice.Quick example: My business is up and running. My copy of Quickbooks is installed on my PC. Now I'm ready to start entering banking info. Where do I click to type in the Beginning Balance of my business' checking account?? This book will tell you what a "beginning balance" is. Along with how you track, depreciate and even sell your assets but when staring at the Quickbooks screen and simply trying to enter in the information and get started.... its not gonna help you. Or at least, it didn't help me.I found that simply heading over to Intuit's website and it's associated forums was easier and no matter what question I had, several others did as well. All of my questions had been asked and answered in easy to find posts by someone else at some point. While the book was well written and it's author should be commended for his occasional use of humor and speaking in easy to understand terms (not like sitting in Accounting 101, trust me) I just found this to be a purchase I couldve done without. Again, I've bought many "For Dummies" books and I've kept them all to reference back to from time to time over the years. After reading this one cover to cover, I think it's given me all it can and in my own personal case, it didn't give me much. Sorry.

I have looked up items a number of times in this book now, and though I find what I need to do, the directions are not completely clear. I have the 2013 version, so I feel like what it tells me to do should show up exactly as they say it should on my computer screen, but it does not. This book does not answer my questions when they arise. Maybe it's a more "get started" kind of book. Unfortunately, so far, I've stopped. :(

I will start out by saying that if you have NEVER used an Intuit product, this book would probably help you. I have been a Quicken Home and Business user since 2003. After much prodding by my accountant, I decided to switch to Quickbooks. I decided to get this book along with Quickbooks Pro to make sure I didn't mess anything up in the transfer. This book certainly lives up to its title; the author thinks you're an idiot. At a start, when setting up my business, he encourages you to use the express setup method because 'it's accelerated and suprisingly good!' I used this method initially only to have to delete my business and start over 30 minutes later because it didn't include several key things for my business. I went back and used the advanced setup, even after the author says (I'm quoting here) "Don't fiddle with the Advanced Setup unless you're an accounting expert." I'm no expert, but I think i know more about my business than Quickbooks does. I was also disappointed with the book did NOT cover how to 'import' income and expenses into Quickbooks if you're not starting January 1. At this point, I'm keeping track of my questions and will be conference calling with my accountant over what I still can't figure out in a couple of weeks of using Quickbooks.

Honestly, I just hate quick books. I think it's clearly a robust application but needlessly complicated. This book is more of a reference book than a guide - which in hindsight is what I really need. So while it may be a good book, it really didn't meet my needs. I gave it three stars because it could be that I need something different than what the book offers.

Clearly written and easy to use reference for those of us who are not in love with QuickBooks.

Quick Books 2013-Now I can, because of this book, get my taxes done on time and my books in order. Order is what you need when you have 4 companies and need to separate all the accounting. This book has all the answers I use to have to wait for hours on the phone to get.

did not really help me very much. I took over a set already set up so the info I needed was not in books.

Any for Dummies book is an asset. If you are new to QuickBooks then by all means have this book near your computer and use it as a reference. It explains and guides you through QuickBooks in an easy to understand manner.Bob H.

Beware! I am missing part of chapter 12, all of chapter 13, and chapter 14 is in two separate places in the middle of other chapters. Chapters 15 and 16 are messed up as well. Every student in my summer class, that ordered this book on Amazon, has the same issue. The class is ha;f over and a summer course, plus the book is marked up, so there isn't time to get a replacement. I did give it two stars because the first 11 chapters have been great. The graphics and summaries with questions and case studies has been very helpful for learning the material. If it wasn't for the messed up copy, this book would be 5 stars.

So everything was fine with this book until I got to chapter 12. After 3 or so pages it turned into chapter 14, which along with chapter 15, was repeated twice. The rest of chapter 12 and chapter 13 are nowhere to be seen...Really wish I would have discovered this when the return window was still open.

The text/content itself is pretty straight-forward and is pretty understandable assuming you have a good grasp on basic cell and molecular bio. BUT, check for missing pages especially before you start your class/semester. My professor gave us a warning today that some copies of this textbook was defective and told us to make sure our copies were ok. Pages 170-something and 220 are where he warned us that there might be missing/defective pages, so CHECK YOUR BOOKS.For me, it was after pg 172 (next pg read as 221) and pg 268 (next pg was 221). I posted pics to show the errors to show the missing pages and duplicate. Again, PLEASE CHECK YOUR BOOKS!

Excellent! Best amazon site! Rentals are delivered fast! Making school affordable !

The book was missing 40 pages in the middle of the book.

An excellent textbook. Good amount of information and well written.

Let me begin by saying, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. For those on the path of seeking, this book adds nicely to other literature in your library and is well worth the price. At first, I thought this book would be a great primer for those unfamiliar with esoteric concepts, but I'm not sure at this point, because it delves into some more advanced concepts that may be difficult to grasp for someone just picking this book off the shelf. There were definitely chapters that I sort of sped through, with a promise to come back and think about later. That being said, the fact that it's more of a story (an autobiography, really), than a textbook, makes it an incredibly enjoyable read. You become invested in an outcome and the lessons that the book teaches are more effectively translated because you ride along with the author as she learns those lessons. This book is similar to Aleph by Paulo Cuehlo in that it tells the tale of a personal experience of the author, dealing with past lives and lessons of the physical world and beyond. The exception being, this book really goes into depth about the secrets of mystical teachings, primarily from ancient Egypt; but showing how those teachings are universal, and alive and well in today's world, if one is persistent enough to search for them. All that being said, this is not a book I devoured in short order, primarily due to heavy subjects and, at times, my own struggle with the storyline and personal understandings. However, this book far surpassed my expectations based on some of the reviews. I thought this book was really going to challenge my beliefs, but instead gave me another complementary layer and perspective to add to my growing spiritual understanding. That understanding is that all is one, God is us and everything, we're spirits having a "physical" experience and that experience is to learn and grow in this school on Earth. This book will reinforce those concepts and add many details and perspectives to those concepts. All around a great book and a must read for those who have, at least, a basic grasp of esoteric teachings. One last comment... if Elisabeth Haich's past life memories are true (which I lean toward believing), you also get a history lesson on Ancient Egypt that you won't find in any textbook.

The packaging surrounding the author's ideas is very controversial. The author claims she is describing a past life experience. Supposedly she was initiated into the mystery school back in Egypt when the Great Pyramid was still fully operational. Honestly, whether you believe that or not is irrelevant. Instead, I ask that you ignore the grandiose wrapping and focus on what's in the box: what she actually says about the initiation process and reasons behind those ancient practices. The information there contains its own incredible merit.Let me clear here and just say that I've read a lot of esoteric lore, some of it utter bunk. This stuff, however, is prime real estate. I know this because the ideas in it coincide very well with multiple sources that have stood the test of time.Could she have just borrowed these ideas and slapped on her previous life story for extra attention? Well, sure. But don't make the mistake of thinking what she says about the mystery teachings is erroneous or empty handed. Because it's not. In fact, much of what she shares is so astoundingly profound in its simplicity and poetic subtleties that you can tell she is talking about something she has a deep appreciation and understanding of.You cannot understand this text yourself and grasp what I mean from a purely objective standpoint here. I'm sorry. I know many of you skeptics/cynics out there don't want to hear that. But it's true. You have to have the background experiences yourself to make the intuitive connections that show what she's saying is indeed accurate, which is a roundabout way of saying you have to be a kind of initiate yourself. To put it another way, the author is speaking a language few can hear.I also think this explains the myriad of comments here, many of which seem to like the book but then complain about certain parts. Because this text is littered with complex abstractions, terms few have a genuine sense for, it's really no surprise that there have been several misinterpretations and misunderstandings about what Elisabeth said.Regardless, I'm still forced to present a seemingly contradictory statement at this point and say that the book also presents esoteric teachings in a more accessible fashion. If you compare, for example, The Tibetan Book of the Dead to this book, you can sort of get what I mean here. The author adds a human element to the delivery that makes the teachings seem more familiar to many people, but the meanings remain muti-dimensional because--after all--that's the inherent nature of the ancient philosophy.Okay, so enough of the mystic slant. Let me end this review with a giddy heads up: If you pay close attention, you'll find some very astounding kernels of information. For example, she says that sometimes the pyramids would thunder and create lightning, even rain clouds. Electromagnetic elaborations aside that any meteorologist can appreciate, let's just consider for a moment the often discussed water erosion on the sides of the Sphinx. Perhaps this is another explanation for that anomaly? The elongated heads of the "Sons of God" mentioned in this book that was originally published in the 1960s are also fascinating when one considers the more recent discoveries about similar heads, namely that the DNA from those that were excavated in Peru do not match any known human DNA on record. There's more, lots more, but I'll leave the remaining dots for you to connect ...

a very fascinating read, but there are some weird racial ideas in this book that are questionable.

This is my all time favorite, second only to Autobiography of a Yogi. This book requires concentrated deliberation to read as the font is small and the information is huge. Not for light reading but for the soul searching beginner, or not, it's life changing..or maybe I should say 'remembering'..a great book, a must for the sincere seeker

Fantastic read about the initiation performed under the chamber below the Sphinx during the time of high-Egypt. So many insights about the divine nature of our soul and our history. Elisabeth Haich has definitely given us a unique insight in the epoch of the Pharaohs, packed with so fascinating description of her life in ancient Egypt. Much wisdom and knowledge to gain from the book about our origins and our soul's path.

This book transports the reader back into ancient Egypt, and inside the pyramids for Initiation ritual-and-instruction by the high priests of esoteric science. It is a worthy book for those on the path of enlightenment. It begins a bit slowly, but soon picks up the pace. It is not, however, an easy read. It takes patience and perseverance; and the language is often obsolete and stilted. Nevertheless, it is a treasure trove of information on reincarnation, astrology, karma, light, symbolism, energy, metaphysics, gods and goddesses, individuation, romance, lions, sexuality, the rewards of personal evolution, and the pitfalls of chelaship (discipleship). Rightly considered a classic, it is something of a must read for those would counterbalance standard Western Egyptology with esoteric insight.
