Purchased this book for my Mom, a true green thumb, for Christmas and she LOVES it! She has said thank you several times and recently told me she has to force herself to not read ahead so she can savor it over a whole year, LOL!

A wonderful book! One doesn't even need to be a gardener to enjoy this book. It might even encourage a non-gardener. The writer is very entertaining and has a special gift of humor. The diary format is great.

Sweet little captions or short blurbs about gardening...some funny, some serious, but all gardeners know how true it all is!

I am enjoying reading this book at bedtime because the author was clearly enthusiastic about gardens and gardening, and so am I. I concur with another reviewer who pointed out that the author was very well-to-do (tips usually take the form of "have xyz done," assuming you have someone to work for you), so most of us would not relate well. What bothers me most, however, is that there are a few racial and gender statements typical of phrases and attitudes in the 1920s that are quite offensive now. In fact, when the first instance cropped up, it affected my whole attitude to the writer, although I know he was a product of his time. The author's comments on the cosiness and security of home during bad weather or bad times and other domesticalities do stand the test of time, though, and I've enjoyed some laughs from his comments on visitors from the city.All things considered, you may want to check the book out of a library and see if you like it - or can tolerate the occasional un-PC lapses.

If you like gardening memoirs, this one is pretty good. Some of his comments are dated, but he is generally good-humored.

It is a timeless piece of work for any serious gardener and will keep you company through all sorts of gardening trials and tribulations s well as successes and conquests. I have given many copies to my most beloved friends.

Buah and J.F.A. Ajayi), which was originally published in 1965. That was written primarily for readers in West Africa itself, and proved immensely popular, with sales totalling almost half a million copies. Now, Basil Davidson has rewritten, updated and expanded it, entirely reconceiving the eralier work specifically for readers outside Africa - to whom the richness and variety of the societies of pre-colonial West Africa are likely to be almost wholly unfamiliar. Such readers could have no more clear or communicative a guide than Professor Davidson, who writes here with his customary warmth and vigour. He surveys the development and history of the peoples and empires of West Africa from earliest times (though the detailed treatment begins, as before, c.1000 AD) through to the mid-nineteenth century, when European colonial ambitions in Africa put a temporary end to the story. West Africa, of course, is a vast area, covering a great range of climates and conditions (from the Sahara to the equatorial jungles of the south), and an equal range of peoples and cultures. It is not a single story that Basil Davidson has to tell, therefore, but many interlocking and overlapping stories. To that end, he provides narrative accounts of the key empires and cultures of West Africa, but sets them in their broader general context, as illuminated by the findings of both historians and anthropologists. The text is richly provided with maps throughout, and a number of halftones bear witness to the wealth and sophistication of some of these societies. The result is an impressive and vivid introduction to a region, and a time, still strangely neglected by the outer world. And yet it is a story than has wide resonances in that larger sphere - for West Africa was one of the key centres of the Slave Trade, and a large part of the populations of the African diaspora in the USA, the Caribbean and Latin America derive ultimately from the region. I used this textbook for a pre-colonial West African class that I taught. For a quick introduction to West Africa's pre-colonial history, it is an okay book. For upper level classes like the one I taught, it is only good in combination with other text books. In my humble opinion, Michael Crowder and Ade Ajayi's History of West Africa, Volume 1 & 2 remain the best books for teaching a course in this field. Unfortunately, the books are no longer in print. Themes in West Africa's History by Emmanuel Kwaku Akyeampong is an excellent textbook to use in conjunction with Davidson's book.

If you're a history buff, student of history, Basil Davidson is an excellent resource on the African Continent. I'm rarely disappointed.

good book...

The book was apparently put together by the publisher from Davidson's earlier works to create a textbook, and I doubt that Davidson had much of anything to do with it.It's totally derivative and useless for my purposes, which had been to possibly list it in the annotated references in an article for the new Oxford Bibliography Online that I was co-authoring with Susan McIntosh. I would like to have returned it in time, but was too busy.

I really like what I am reading so far, I’m not finished but so far Jay really breaks a lot of things down about the art of rapping and the music industry. I think the illustrations are decent but I don’t really like the verses pages with the explanation of the word play in small print, I think it’s the small print that turns me off. Otherwise so far the book is great, I recommend it to anyone who likes Jay or just in love with Hip Hop. I also think Jay lets his guard down a lot in this book, talking about growing up in the Marcy Houses in Brooklyn during the birth of Hip Hop, coming of age during the Crack Epidemic and loving Big Daddy Kane in his Heyday. What I’ve learned is that Jay is a good listener and he pays attention to what’s going on around him, he’s not ashamed of his hustling past (which helped him evolve in the rap game and as a business man). Oh man I’m just loving this book so far. As I progress through the book I will add more to this review, stay tuned...

I'm not someone who has the patience to sit down and read often.A book has to be really compelling.I may be biased because Jay-Z is my favorite rapper and I do consider him the greatest ever.Furthermore,I find him to be a very interesting person in general.I got half way through the book and stopped because it's hard to focus on a book and plan a wedding simultaneously.So far I'm enjoying it,although some of the dialogue became redundant as for me being that I've seen so many interviews with Hova.That being said,there are some parts that are really fascinating and make me appreciate J as an artist even more.The book really can seperate the true intellectual hip hop head from the person who is a front runner or fan of ringtone rap.Fans of "today's hip-hop" probably won't appreciate it.PPL who connected with Jay's transition from street hustler to corporate hustler will embrace it...especially if you appreciate both aspects of his life.In other words,if you were as impressed with the lyrics in his Grammy Family Freestyle as you were with some of his earlier work (as I am),then you'll love this book.If you're narrow minded and you only care about his hustling days or the materialism associated with hip hop,it'll probably bore you and go over your head.I especially dig the dialouge describing him and a less than impressed reporter regarding his use of Che Guevarra rhetoric and memoribilia.To wrap things up,I don't have the attention span to read as often as I should but this book captivated me as long as any other has.It's a good read and I can't wait to pick it back up once my life returns to normalcy lol.

I re-purchased this ebook after losing access to it over the years of activating too many Kindle reader apps on the span of several different devices. The one reason I had interest in reading this book was simply on the fascination of the wealth of knowledge I remembered reading the first time + to reclaim the dominion of owning the publication once more. Shawn Carter [Jay Z]’s nuance of the type of life that he lived in light + hope to see a difference made in his life through the course of changes in it that life presents was inspirational and always is + has remained integral in my own life’s progression and advancement throughout the years passed.

This is one tale that only one person can tell about Jay-Z - Jay-Z himself. It shows enlightenement and leaves us; the audience to juxtapose it to just education. Priceless life experiences can set you on the right part. This is Hovi's politics, his street life, his mentality, his musical genius and other things you wanted to know about Jay. This is not a literary classic, its Jay-Z story, an impressive rendition of himself by himself. First hand look at some of Jay-Z's lyrics, why he sold drugs at a very young age, how he refused to accept that it cannot be done and proceeded to do it. Maybe Jay-Z's naysayers will see why he is respected by both underground and mainstream rap listeners, this is why, at least if you refused to listen to Jay, at least read this book. Form your own opinion, forget about hearsay. The way he makes use of homonyms kind of explains why it seems Jay can flow on any beat, he cares about the rhyming a lot, but most importantly the delivery of the message in the song. One artist that we wont forget in a hurry is Jay-Z, not just about his music, but about the choices he had to make in life and how he overcame from almost nothing.The only thing i have a problem with; why did you give it all away Jay? lol.

In a rural state such as Vermont, although plenty of opportunities for hiking exist, finding them can be difficult since they are off the beaten path. This guide will help you find those hidden (and some not-so-hidden) hiking gems that are scattered throughout the Green Mountain state.This guide describes 61 hikes scattered fairly evenly across Vermont. Hikes range in length from 0.5 miles to 15 miles with the average at around 4-6 miles. Each hike comes with some basic facts about the trail, a rather detailed set of directions to the trailhead, a map, a detailed trail description, and usually a photo. The maps are typical Falcon maps: they show the trail, a couple of main features, and not much else. I have to say I don't understand why Falcon doesn't upgrade their maps to the USGS topo variety that are found in the 50-hikes series and most other top hiking guides these days. Still, I have lots of Falcon hiking guides on my shelf, so I guess my wallet speaks louder than this review.Perhaps the most outstanding quality of this guide is the author's wide and varied vocabulary. In fact, this guide has a literary quality not found in most hiking guides. Occassionally this gets in the way of clarity. For example, the author describes the trail to Camel's Hump as a "bony" trail. Does he mean rocky? narrow? These cases are the exception, and usually the author's vocabulary simply makes the reading experience more enjoyable.I have heard some other people complain about the lack of Long Trail information in this book. On this point I must respectfully disagree. True, if you are looking to hike the Long Trail from start to finish, you will need better information than what is provided here. Still, 16 of the hikes in this book describe dayhikes along the Long Trail, and this is a book on hiking, not backpacking. Most dayhikers will find plenty on the Long Trail here to keep them busy for a long time.In summary, this may not be the best guide to Vermont hiking on the market, but this book merits serious consideration. I withheld one star, mainly for the maps and slightly for the potentially vague descriptions. As I said though, this book has a literary quality not found in most hiking guides. So if you enjoy reading hiking guides or you are interested in Vermont hiking, this book should find its way onto your shelf.

This is an excellent addition to the Falcon Guide hiking series, and the author adds a touch of humor and class to each route description. The driving directions to each trailhead are detailed and accurate. the route descriptions are similarly packed with information that any hiker can use. If there was a chance of seeing wildlife, Pletcher duly notes it and informs you when the best times are for seeing bears or moose. If you're backpacking, he tells you where to find water and where reliable springs are located.I was a little disappointed that he didn't concentrate more on the 260 mile Long Trail which traverses the length of Vermont. I was looking for information of their shelters and side routes into towns along the way. But for day hikers, this is a good, reliable and handy guide. Recommended.

This book, along with "50 hikes in Vermont" takes care of every aspect of hiking I want to do in Vermont on a daily basis.Hiking Vermont contains the majority of short hikes of 5 miles or less. There are some longer hikes of 11 miles or more but if you're driving along and decide to take an hour or two to explore the woods, then this book is for you.You don't need a GPS to find the trailhead, the directions are well documented. This book also has perfect maps of the trail and a nice selection of pictures on the trail. It's my driving bible.

The JE Reader, compiled by the faculty at Yale who direct the Jonathan Edwards Center there, provides the best introduction to the thought of this intellectual giant, considered by many to be not only America's greatest theologian but also its greatest philosopher. The wide selection of texts are drawn from his major theological and philosophical works, but also include his most famous sermons, personal writings and letters. For those familiar only with his "Sinners" sermon (a classic of the genre and of rhetoric in general, which is why it makes all the anthologies, and is required reading in English philology and American Studies programs around the world), the volume reveals the breadth and depth of Edwards' thought, which was driven not by the fires of hell but by his vision of the beauty of God.

Very interesting read. Insightful to inspire thought as well as alternative perspective. Must be open to consider various questions. Can take you out of your comfort zone.

What can I say? A great selection of pieces of Edwards work. If you read it all and pay attention you will learn all about Edwards!

It has everything important for a beginning reader of Edwards, beautifully edited. I chose it for classroom use and it was just right.

This was the required primary text reading for a class on Edwards. When it was all said and done, I was very disappointed. There is a wide selection of Edwards' works in this volume--sermons, letters, essays and treatises. It was helpful to be able to read parts from so many of these works. Edwards' writings can be quite varied, and this volume really allows the reader to see the difference in his writings.But......The editorial process on each work is rough. Admittedly, several of the works are quite lengthy in their full text, and you would just need to buy the two volume version of Edwards' works (and a magnifying glass) if you wanted the full texts. However, some of these texts are cut so short that you don't really get a feel for Edwards' real argument. I'm specifically thinking about his treatise on Original Sin, where you only get some of his natural arguments, and little (if any) of his biblical and theological arguments. The same could be said about the treatise on Free Will. This is unfortunate, as it makes Edwards look to be more of a philosopher and less of a theologian. Edwards was clearly both.The editors had no choice but to chop Edwards' works into small pieces for this volume. However, it would have been nice to see the multifaceted nature of his arguments, instead of being left with a few odd ramblings.

This book is a permanent fixture on my night stand. After the Bible itself, Edwards offers the best source of spiritual support for the reformed-theology oriented believer. (At the very least, he's right up there with Calvin.) He was not only a compelling minister, but a world-class thinker, and the depth of his thought is only recently beginning to be appreciated. (An outstanding source on Edwards as a thinker is "The Philosophy of Jonathan Edwards," by Stephen H. Daniel. (Indiana University Press, 1994.) In his academic works, Edwards frequently mentions Locke, and it's easy to conclude that he is just another modern philosopher, albeit with a reformed-theological bias. Nothing is further from the truth. An in-depth reading of Edwards reveals a subtlety of thought which anticipates that of Heidegger. Many volumes could be written on t his subject alone. Like Heidegger, Edwards was interested in understanding what it means to be human, and sought his answers in human lived experience, rather than in a rarified conceptual model far removed from the world of everyday human being. It is here that we begin to appreciate the magnitude of his genius, since his ontology cuts across the mind-will dualism which has bedeviled Western philosophy at least since Descartes. In any case, it's rare indeed to find a writer who speaks with equal fluency to the heart as well as the head. In this respect, Edwards has few peers, and even fewer superiors (if any). An anthology like this can scarcely do justice to the breadth and depth of Edwards' thought, but it's an excellent place to begin. And too, at a time, like the present, when evangelical Christianity is long overdue for a second reformation, Christian ministers and theologians could do worse than take their cue from Edwards.This collection of essays is carefully edited, but, from a hard-core scholar's point of view, lacks the authority of the critically-edited volumes of Edwards' works being prepared by Yale University. But it's far superior to any other collection of Edwards' works. Each volume in the critical editions is rather pricey, but well worth the investment.

This book contains excellent choices from the writings of Jonathan Edwards, the first great philosopher in the American colonies, including some of his earliest writings, mostly just philosophical or biological musings. It reflects some interesting developments in the maturation of his thinking. It also has letters to friends, colleagues, and family members. Some of his most well-known sermons are alongside some representative samples of his sermons. Unfortunately, there is room for only excerpts from his longer works, such as The Religious Affections, but that can't be helped in an affordable popular anthology. If you want all of his works, but the complete works from the same publisher. If you just want a representative sample of some of the best works of this great theologian and philosopher, get this.

Apostoli includes the plea, made several times, to complete the "Five First Fridays" and to live in a way that we will be witnesses and instruments of the grace of God to transform the world. There is also an interesting and provocative reflection on the apparitions and the possibility that they can promote Catholic-Muslim dialogue.The book is just 284 pages long, with almost 50 of those pages being appendixes which add further detail to parts of the book, including a response to the criticism that the consecration of Russia (as called for by the apparitions) made by Pope John Paul II is not adequate.

Yes, the message of Fatima is still active. And, we still can change the world with prayer and love of God the Father, Jesus the Son, and the Holy Spirit through the beautiful love and guidance of the earthly mother of Jesus, Mary who is also our mother. Fr. Apostoli beautifully explains the many Church teachings about Mary and Fatima and the children and how Mary through her maternal care loves her children on earth. Like any good mother she encourages her earthly children to do things--prayer, penance, confession, reparation-- to help their spiritual growth and at the same time to call down graces to earth. Although this is my third book on Fatima and having read many shorter articles and chapters in other books, I found Fr. Apostoli's book to present material in a fresh way. More than any other material I have read, Fr. Apostoli relates the message of Fatima to events in the world clearly and shows us that through the intercession of Mary to God and Jesus we can hope for a better world and we can see glimpses of God at work in the world today. My faith grew. My understanding of the message and the great love of Mary for her children grew.

For those of us who have studied the story of Our Lady of Fatima and her conversations and.revelations. to. the. three children in Fatima, Portugal, this is a magnificent book that puts all the elements together in an. interesting. and. gripping. narrative that provides. pathways. of. activities. to. grow. in understanding and appreciating. the. Providence of God to enrich and complete. the life of each individual who is willing. to. grow in truth and grace.

This is a great book by a very respectable, holy priest. I think it is a must read for everyone. It really helps to make sense of what is going on in the world today and offers hope for bringing true peace to the world which no one can deny we really need. This is the second copy I purchased. I read the first one and gave it away (to a Muslim) a number of years back. I want to reread it and possibly pass this one on also.

This book helps explain so many mysteries, not just Fatima. I hunger and this book feeds my soul

Father Apostoli provides the clearest guide ever to the apparitions at Fatima. His treatment both of the actual event and the response of the Church to it is balanced - reflecting a faithfulness and charity unfortunately lacking in some other works on this subject. In particular, he demonstrated that Pope (now Saint!) John Paul II did consecrate Russia to the Immaculate Heart despite what a number of naysayers, doomsdayers, and radical Catholic reactionaries contend. Saint John Paul II was the Marian pope of our time - and Sister Lucia confirmed clearly that his consecration was "accepted by Heaven." But the book is hardly a polemic, it is a sure guide to the importance of Fatima in our time. A splendid read!

I have just finished Fr. Apostoli's wonderful book on Fatima and I would recommend it to every Catholic. Our Lady's requests at Fatima are simple and can be carried out by anyone. As I read the book I couldn't help but wonder what our world would be like today if more people had heeded her message and warnings from the beginning.
