Very interesting historically, and for me as someone who is researching this time period in England. The story is a true one about a joiner (specific carpentry skill) who dedicated much of his talent and time to create hiding places for Catholic priests during the reign of Queen Elizabeth. St. Nicholas was determined to save priests since the Queen's punishment was execution, usually by means of being drawn (humiliated by being transported through town in a cart) hung (until fainting but not yet dead) castrated, disemboweled usually while still alive, and then quartered (head and limbs severed) after which their body parts were displayed publicly. This was done after a period of extreme torture meant to extract information regarding those who provide priests shelter or other means of survival. Those who did so were fined heavily, and/or had their lands and property confiscated. The life of Nicholas is quite inspiring in the way he lived out his faithfulness as a Catholic in such perilous times.

The bold Jesuit brother whose hiding places saved the lives of not only priests - and King Charles himself - but of the families involved in the Catholic underground who sheltered priests, who in turn offered the Sacraments for them. The King was saved by priest holes during the English Civil Wars. Nicholas was horribly tortured, finally dying from the punishments of the British torturers, but never betrayed anyone. He prayed as he worked, imploring God's guidance to create hides that would do the job properly.

Would be good if I had a pirated copy of Delphi and wanted the VCL reference in hardcopy.I E-mailed the address provided on the Web site but received no reply. I called the phone number provided on the web site (a non 800 number)and left a message in voice mail. No reply.I feel I have been scammed.END

A total waste of money. Includes a CD which only has hyperlinks to a non-existent web site, the contents of the CD is contrary to what is described on the back cover. Email's sent to the publishers regarding the CD were ignored.Do not include this book in your library. The Delphi Online Help is of better value.

I was very dissatisfied with the content of the book. The examples given were very rudimentary and offered less than the Delphi help file.

This compendium of the norse kings' chronicles is a great effort to keep the flavor and literary rhythym of the original works by Snorri Sturluson.The extensive annotations and clarifications make this an ideal reference work for navigating the labyrinth of icelandic and norse sagas and other literature from the Scandinavian side of the sea. It's an ideal companion to an aggregation of the norse sagas. If this volume has a shortcoming, that is that it lacks what all of the present-day renderings of the related body of literature could have to add interest for the novice: up-to-date maps keyed to the individual chronicles. But in fairness, that could be a volume in itself, for sure!Criticism of this translation of the Snorri's chronicles of the lives of the norse kings as "victorian" is not very insightful. First, the Victorian era ended with the 20th century (Queen Victoria died in 1899). This volume dates at the earliest back to 1932.Second, expecting a translation that reads like Harry Potter does a major disservice to both Snorri's and the editorial board/translators' efforts. It might make for a more casual read, but that isn't the purpose of this volume. Perhaps a version of Clif's Notes or a lighter pictoral Marvel's comics edition will be forthcoming...

This is the best history book that I have ever read. It is very full of history and details without any author input of personal opinions. I have been doing genealogy and this book has cleared up some questions that I could not find answers to anywhere. The book is well worth it for anyone into history or genealogy.

This book was well worth the money. Even though a used copy, it was in excellent condition much better than I expected. This is a fairly good translation of the Heimskringla, but I wish the editiors would have included more in the way of introductory, background and critical material. Granted there is a little, but I would have like more. But this might not be a problem for most people. If you don't have a lot of money to spend, I would go with this edition.

Just as they are rushing to find an antidote Count Olaf comes aboard the submarine and tries to throw the children in the brig. Will they escape from Count Olaf? Will they get an antidote in time? Where is the sugar bowl? And where did Captain Widdershins and Phil disappear to?Lemony Snickets answers some, but not all of those questions in this delightful entry in the series. As usual the book is filled with quirky characters, including Captain Widdershins and his constant use of the word "Aye" and his motto "He who hesitates is lost", Phil, who sees the bright side of everything, and Fiona, who knows an awful lot about mushrooms. Viola, Klaus and Sunny are all growing up, with Viola and Klaus showing interest in the opposite sex and learning that maybe their parents weren't perfect after all. Sunny is speaking more and more clearly and while it's still fun to try and decipher what she is saying, it's a lot easier than it was in the earlier books.These books are not just for children, as an adult, I really enjoy this series. I really liked this book, but it left a lot of questions that need to be answered in the two books remaining in the series. This book does end on a happier note than any of the previous books, which I found intriguing. I can't wait for the next one!

It was sticky the entire book and I think it was the ripped stickers? I was unaware it was from an library so it was covered in other tapes and stickers or stamps that wont come off and I literally can't even touch it because I am allergic to the adhesive it is covered in. I couldn't be more dissapointed and it should have been listed as a lesser quality than what was sent.

Who doesn't like Lemony Snicket? I'll just take this moment also to say that everyone should get the audio versions that are narrated by Tim Curry. They are awesome! Tim Curry narrates like no other.

Even though Olaf was in this one he wasn't in it quite as much, it felt like, and so it ended up being quite an interesting change for once.

Another great installment in the series!

Bought to replace missing volume from set I got 11 year old granddaughter. She has stayed engrossed in them.
