Review

"Bangladesh is a new nation but an old land. It comprises the world's largest delta and one of the most densely populated areas. It has been home to diverse linguistic, religious, and cultural traditions. Yet its past strength and present achievements are often overshadowed by accounts of natural and man-made disasters. In this book, scholars from across the globe put together written and visual materials to provide facts about and perspectives on a vibrant Bangladesh." (Anisuzzaman, Professor Emeritus, University of Dhaka, Bangladesh)"There is nothing else like The Bangladesh Reader. The range of materials included is stunning, and the volume conveys the feeling of Bangladesh speaking for itself, in many voices. The Reader will definitely be a useful introduction for people who know little or nothing about the country. It also has much to offer people who know a great deal about it. I have studied Bangladesh for years, and I learned a lot reading through this volume." (David Ludden, author of Early Capitalism and Local History in South India)“This revelatory volume brings alive Bangladesh’s tormented history and vibrant culture through a selection of excerpts and illustrations from works of history, journalism, literature, and visual art.” (Andrew J. Nathan Foreign Affairs)“Here are the key reasons I found the volume very useful: (a) before this, the history of Bangladesh was a mere appendage to what happened in India and later Pakistan. Its politics was looked at as a mere response to the stimuli provided by India and Pakistan. This book is the first attempt on a grand scale to make the history and politics of Bangladesh stand on its own feet, (b) it is as wide as it is deep. It is wide in the sense that it covers the entire history of this nation from the ancient times until today.” (Subhajyoti Ray Economic and Political Weekly)“This is a unique, impressive and imaginative approach to compiling a volume of this nature. . . . Does The Bangladesh Reader fulfill and even exceed our expectations at times? Insofar as it is possible to compile a general text on the eighth most populous nation on earth, the answer is an emphatic yes.' (Ali Raza Dawn)“The essays, stories, reports, documents, photographs and cartoons in this volume offer an escape from the stereotypes and a real encounter with the country and its people. The way the editors have ensured this is remarkably refreshing. The result is more rewarding than dry academic research or journalistic simplifications.” (Ashishis Chakrabarti The Telegram (Calcutta))“The latest addition to Duke University Press’ World Readers series is a gem. It offers both general readers and specialists an unprecedented and much-needed array of information, voices, images and perspectives on Bangladesh’s history, politics and culture. . . . Overall, this is a hugely impressive feat of scholarship for which the two editors should be congratulated.” (David Lewis Pacific Affairs)"The Reader is exceptional because of the eyes of the editors for details of everyday life and the pot-pourri nature of the entries. ...The two distinguished scholars compile the rich narratives with an eye for the ordinary. It is this subaltern view that gives the Reader its distinctive character. While other compilers look for the contributions of the most scholarly and the well-known writers, the Reader provides voices to the voiceless, it gives them a rightful place, and they remain not in the margin, but in the mainstream. The weaving of the illustrations, reports, stories and scholarly pieces produce a compendium that should be a mandatory reading for anyone interested in understanding where and how Bangladesh came from. The innovative style of this compendium is of great value and the Reader sets a standard for inclusivity." (Habibul Haque Khondker Asian Journal of Social Science 2015-09-01)

I wanted more of a brief history and cultural guide for the person who will be there for Avery short time with a full agenda.

I thought this book was going to have more anecdotes about people's stories about growing up/ living in Bangladesh and be more about the culture of the country. Not so much. Its a lot of history, which wasn't what I was looking for. I won't finish reading it.

This is a book to own and read every now and then depending on which time period one wants to focus on at the moment. Hundreds of incredible pieces make this collage a piece of art!

Often reading about polar explorers means only getting the view of the lead character, usually the "Boss" or the "Owner" of the expedition. These characters are in themselves well worth reading, but their fame often over shadows the other central figures who the expeditions could never have been made without. Worsley is such a figure. I enjoyed Worsley's relating of his own experience, modestly told, easy to read, and supplying the viewpoint of one of those central characters which puts so much more into the understanding of what the explorers were like as human beings. Shackleton often gets recognition for the great feat of the boat journey, as he should; he was an inspiring leader, but it was Frank Worsley's navigation in incredibly difficult conditions that got them to South Georgia.

An engrossing first person narrative by one of the 6 men that accomplished the amazing, hair-raising 800 mile voyage from Elephant Island to S. Georgia Island in an open life boat, in order to accomplish the rescue of Shackleton's men left standed on the former island after the almost-2-yr survival in the ice floes of the Antactic when the ship had become trapped then crushed & sunk. I have read many different accounts of the whole heroic venture of the Endurance, her crew, and selfless & inspiring leader--Sir Ernest Shackleton. Each account gives a different perspective, & it is interesting to be able to put them all together for a fuller picture of the whole mission. Along with it also goes the story of the Ross Sea Party that had their own drama unfolding on the other side of the Continent at the same time. The entire saga is amazing and thoroughly engrossing!Adding to the whole experience are the phenominal pictures taken and preserved by the expedition photographer, Frank Hurley--boy do these ever add to the drama! An amazing epic!

Captain Worsley is a very capable author and his diary of Shackleton's excursion is a must read for anyone interested in the story of the Endurance. I had already read Caroline Alexander and Alfred Lansings' books so I wasn't sure I would glean anything fresh from Worsley's book. I can say without a doubt that it adds another layer of depth and perspective to the infamous historical narrative I've fallen in love with. So, yes, you need to read it.

In the summer of 1914 Ernest Schackleton's ship Endurance became trapped in Antarctic ice in 53 degree below zero weather. The following winter, the ship was crushed and sank, leaving the crew to camp on the ice while eking out subsistence under unimaginable conditions. In April of 1916, the ice broke apart beneath their feet, and twenty eight men piled into the lifeboats they had rescued from the wreck of the Endurance. These hair raising events are not part of the story of Shackleton's Boat Journey, but simply the preamble, described in less than a page, that sets the stage for the real action that is to follow. The tale is told by F.A. Worsley, the Captain of the Endurance. And what a saga it is, as the entire crew barely makes it to Elephant Island and from there an advance party navigates across the raging, freezing ocean in a tiny boat, all the way to South Georgia Island, from which the balance of the crew are eventually rescued, without one man being lost. What these men endured is beyond belief, yet Worsley recounts it humbly, with understatement, and with considerable grace. Here is an example of his prose:"Squall by squall the wind grew fiercer and the sea heavier. Through a rift in the clouds the moon shone out on the stormy sea and for two minutes revealed the ghostly white uplands and glaciers of the island. Another squall blotted everything out. We heard whales blow right alongside. They may have been killers, but, whatever they were, a push from one of them would have capsized us. If they were killers we would have had a quicker end. Soon to our great relief they left us for some nobler quarry than dirty smelly little men in Burberry overalls".It is amazing that in the midst of a Herculean struggle for survival the author was able to take note of beauty in what must have been a living hell, and to describe it so elegantly. Here for example, is his description of icebergs, "All the strange fantastic shapes rose and fell in a stately cadence, with a rustling, whispering sound and hollow echoes to the thudding seas, clear green at the water line, shading to a deep dark blue far below, all snowy purity and cool blue shadows above".This combination of gripping action and poetic insight makes for a richly rewarding read.Highly recommended.

One of the best books on history and leadership I've ever read. Many people are aware of the fate of the Endurance and Shackleton's voyage to save his men but few know of the details. This book, written by Worsley, tells those details in a fairly concise manner. Worsley was the Captain of the Endurance and accompanied Shackleton on the 800 mile open boat voyage to South Georgia. Worsley was clearly an intelligent man but not a writer. His writing style shows the reality of the danger without the excessive drama some authors would add. The book reveals the great danger and harsh conditions faced by the six men in that 22' boat. It also gives the reader insight into the intelligence and skill possessed by those dedicated sailors. Those men were tough, strong, brave and smart. The book is a quick read and I couldn't put it down. This book should be mandatory reading for anyone in a leadership role.

While I wholeheartedly recommend reading F. A. Worsley's account, I do not recommend buying The Narrative Press version because it doesn't have a single map anywhere inside. Every other publication of this account I have seen has at least a small, simple b&w depiction of the incredible, odds-defying voyage these men undertook. I mean really, TNP, no map for a story of a heroic expedition covering vast nautical distances? For a company which boasts of printing "high-quality," first-hand accounts of exploration, this is pretty sad.

This is a great book for anyone trying to understand how to create vital, engaging worship. The authors lead readers through consideration of the various elements of traditional worship, encouraging careful thought about why it happens that way and whether there are ways to change it and deepen the experience for everyone. Accessible and thought-provoking, it's a great read for anyone seeking a wider understanding of worship practice.

Worship That Works by Arnason and Rolenz is an excellent book that presents the necessary elements for making the worship experience "come alive." After reading this book my wife and I were fascinated by the chapter highlighting All Souls Church Unitarian in Washington DC so we decided to visit since it was not far from where we lived. We were "blown away" by the experience and eventually decided to move closer and are now members. I highly recommend this book for any church community that decides they need "to fine tune" their worship to become the hub of the wheel of life of the church. It really does work!

Clearly written, this book will be of interest to any church group hoping to change in order to attract younger persons. Incidentally, many Unitarians, including me, do no follow christian dogma, and therefore do not consider their fellowship to be a church group.

Not an easy read for a new UU, but fascinating once the effort is put into it. I'm glad to have read it.

Highly recommend this book for worship associates and worship teams. Accessible for lay people and provides concrete helpful information that deepens the analysis and praxis of lay-clergy collaborative worship.

Engaging and inspiring, especially for lay leaders!

The authors give great input into how worship services can be improved. They encourage imagination, seeing what other congregations do, and being attentive to the real needs of the congregation. Great input.

Very helpful for revamping how our fellowship does worship.

Where's the Penguin?, by Chuck Whelon

From School Library Journal

K-Gr 2—"A clever family of penguins has escaped from a city zoo. They are on a mission to get back to their home in Antarctica. Along the way, the penguins stop off at lots of exciting places and have all kinds of fun." This is all true. The 10 penguins vary in looks and personalities as described in their "Penguin Profiles" page. Readers have to find all 10 on each spread, à la "Where's Waldo?" Some of the wacky places depicted include a shopping mall, a haunted house, a restaurant, a Mardi Gras carnival, a water park, outer space, and many more. The most challenging puzzle is saved for last, when the penguins finally reach home and are surrounded by a multitude of penguins just like them. Nonetheless, finding the penguins is not an impossible task, thanks to Whelon's expert depictions of each of the unique and now familiar penguin family members. Each spread features a brief introduction to the new place, a few clues, and the challenge question, "Can you find all ten penguins?" Whelon's illustrations are zany, colorful, and chock-full of details and interesting things for kids to spot, in addition to the penguin family. Readers young and old(er) will delight in the search. And just when you think it's over, back matter contains answers to each puzzle, "Extra Things To Spot" in each place, and the female zoo keeper offering this new challenge: "I'm also in every picture, trying to catch those naughty penguins. Can you spot me?" The fun is seemingly never-ending. VERDICT A welcome addition for all elementary libraries and "Where's Waldo?" fans looking for a refreshing new twist on the classic.—Megan Kilgallen, Packer Collegiate Institute, Brooklyn

"The penguins have escaped from the zoo and they can be spotted throughout the pages of this book enjoying themselves by the lake, in the desert, at the museum - in fact, all over the place. The trouble is, these are all very busy places so can you spot them? There's a little story on each page too, so more to spot. As well, the pictures are packed with humorous details so make sure you enjoy all these."Â - parentsintouch.co.uk"Fantastically detailed... brilliant" - The Bookbag

Perfect for my 3 year old grandson. Not too easy, but not so hard to find the penguins that he becomes frustrated. He also likes that the penguins have names and personalities and that there's a story line to follow.

My son is so happy with this book, we start with where is curious george, wich he still love, but now that he is 4 we needed something more dificult but apropiate for a kid. Perfect! 👌🏻

This book is so cute and fun! My 4 year old loves it. She likes Where’s Waldo but is not quite ready to be able to find all the guys and highlights hidden pictures are too easy for her. This is a great middle difficulty find it book.

It's adorable. My five-year-old grandson and I love it. It's a good step before where's Waldo

I bought this book for my 5 year old nephew and he loves it! There are 10 characters to find on each page and he has memorized all the character's names. It keeps him entertained for a while because there are so many characters to find and he gets so excited each time he finds one of them :) The illustrations are beautiful and it's so fun to notice all the intricacies incorporated.

My child loves this book! He is 4 and can't get enough of search and finds. Great to keep him occupied without using screen time.

One of the better "find it in the picture" books. Great for kids.

I love this book and it's a great relaxing thing to do. I bought other ones like this. I would recommend this.

My parents had several of these guides on different subjects when I was a kid so I was already familiar with them. I had to pick one up for a budding rock hunting hobby, and as always they don't disappoint. Good, detailed information, and a section of each book is dedicated to high quality color photos to supplement the drawings.

I got this as a gift for my ex-boyfriend while we were still dating. He sucked, but this book rocked. (Haha, get it? "Rock"ed?)**In hindsight, my sense of humor may have been the reason why our relationship ended.

I read the reviews and had hoped that this book would allow my kids to identify the many different kinds of rocks we find in our summer trips. The bulk of the book focuses on minerals (crystals) and there isn’t a lot of options for identifying the many different types of rocks that we find on our vacations. We have a rock tumbler and this book is not suited for that type of information.

I don't know a lot about geology, but like a lot of outdoors people, I often find myself picking up or photographing interesting rocks and geological formations when I'm hiking or foraging. I'd like to know more about geology and history of the areas I hike, and I'd like to understand the forces that created the landscape, but I'm not really interested in getting a BS in geology in order to do so.What I really like about this book that it's it doesn't assume any existing knowledge on the part of the reader. It's a simple, straightforward guide to mineral identification, based on color and structure. Well over half the book consists of really excellent color plates that are particularly helpful to a beginner who doesn't know the detailed terminology of geology. "It's pink, and it's crystalline" or "it's black and igneous" about as much as you have to no to find your way in this book. Strongly recommended.

First published in 1979, and in its 32nd printing, but apparently without notable updates. Although comprehensive in its way, it is first of all biased towards minerals by a 5 to 1 margin! And most of those minerals the average person is unlikely to ever see except in a minerals collection----only dedicated mineral hunters will ever encounter them otherwise. Furthermore, many if not most of the images of minerals are of sections or polished/cleaned specimens---so, not what you will see in the field! The author died in 1991at age 78.There are only 40 images of rocks, what most people will encounter on hikes or road cuts. And the photos are all from 1979 apparently, and quite a few are just awful even by 1979 standards. Part of my job is photography in a museum and museum settings, so I know whereof I speak.Extremely disappointing, not up to the standards of the other current Audubon guides at all (excepting the text, perhaps).

I used to get these books every year for my birthday from my parents. I looked through them countless times. I love the insects and arachnids one the best, since I love bugs! Because of the fond memories and that we have a collection of them already, I bought this for my husband for his birthday. He loves rocks and minerals and LOVED looking through this! I always catch him looking through it, and he really enjoys it. I am really happy with this purchase. Good price, GREAT pictures, and lots of information. These Audubon books always feel like they are made well also. The cover, the pages, the pictures, everything is great quality.

This is a very good book by none other than the Audubon society. Clear images and easy to follow descriptions. Very handy book to have either at home or to bring along in the field. The book size is also very handy as it is not to large, but fits easily in any backpack.

This is the best book about rocks and minerals. It's a must have for rock hounds and fossil hunters. We all need to identify the rocks, do they have minerals or fossils in them? These are just the best series of book for the natural world out there I can recommend all of them to people. The price is great, it's a good savings over book store prices.

First off, the vinyl cover makes this book a superior field guide because it can actually survive the field environment, unlike many others. The next great feature of this guide is the picture section in the middle of the book. It breaks the minerals down into color groups (green, red, metallic, etc) and then shows high quality photos of the different minerals. The quality of the photos is incredible, the only downside is that there is nothing in the photograph for scale. You cannot tell if the mineral you are looking at is 4 mm across or 4 inches. The third and perhaps most valuable feature is the identification chart. Like the photographs, this is broken down by color first. Within each color, the minerals are listed in order of increasing hardness. Then a list of identifying characteristics is listed for each mineral. For example, you have a green mineral of about 4-4.5 in hardness, the book lists fluorite as having perfect octahedral cleavage, smithsonite as having rhombohedral cleavage and reacting to dilute acid, and austinite is bladed or accicular. Pick which description matches your sample and you have identified your mineral. On both the photo section and the identification chart, each mineral also has the page number where you can read a further description of your mineral. The major flaw in the descriptions is the lack of optical data, but this is only a short coming if you will be looking at samples in thin section on a regular basis.

Best money we've ever spent on Amazon. Bought for my son who is OBSESSED with skyscrapers. This has tons of pictures and facts on each building such as heights, number of floors and materials used. It also compares each building against the Burj Khalifa and Empire state building. He loves it. LOVES it. Carries the book with him. Constantly paging through it. Huge hit.

I have always loved loved loved tall buildings. The views and the vistas of many are best experienced first hand and so this book is a commemoration of all the different ways you can get up high and see the world around you.The book is stunning because the book format is tall and skinny, like the elevator ride that'll get you to the top.If you're looking for a collection of dreams made reality in the shape of tall buildings, then this is the book to get. Just make sure your bookshelf has some head clearance room!

I purchased this book for my 8 year old son who is obsessed with the tallest structures in the world. The pictures are beautiful and the information interesting. Some of the content is probably too verbose and written with vocabulary fit for a more mature reader. I found a few typos, which I found surprising, but it is still a great read. The size of the book is so big, we have a hard time just sitting on the couch reading it. It is definitely easer to read while sitting at a table.

My 10-year-old stepson is fascinated by skyscrapers and loves this book. The size and shape of it and the details on each building definitely add to its appeal. The writing, however, is for an adult audience and quite verbose, far beyond his comprehension as well as that of most 10-year-olds. My stepson doesn't seem to care, but for a kid slightly less interested in skyscrapers this book may be a bit dull.

The book is nicely written, full of information and has sensational photographs and illustrations. It is a long tall book just like the subject matter and it's unusual shape is really necessary to get the quality of the photos down right. I can recommend the book to anyone who likes buildings of any sort but especially to those fascinated by skyscrapers. If you have a child interested in Skyscrapers, I can recommend this too. depending on their age, the text may be hard going for them but the visuals are sure to impress.

Not only are the pictures fabulous, but the writing is excellent. Dupre makes observations that one would not necessarily make without her expert knowledge and intuitive understanding of buildings, communities, people, cultures...it is fun to just browse the book and gasp at the amazing buildings, or choose one and read of its intricacies. This is a PERFECT GIFT BOOK!

I ordered this book expecting a smaller book with pics and interesting facts but what I got was SO much better! This book is HUGE, and full of gorgeous pics and information on the worlds tallest buildings. In the upper corner there is a comparison to the Burj Khalifa and The Empire State Building. I bought this book for my 12 yr old aspiring architect and it was a major hit! (It got him off the XBOX for a few days!)

Bought four books on Skryscrapers, this was the best of the bunch. You'd think an architecture book can't be captivating but I loved it...

Initially I was excited because I’m a fan of the book series. And pre-ordered The book. However this book is terrible! Not even character development, story lines. Overall I was bored and a waste of my money.

Truly amazing. Great to see Rio journey. We all sometimes go looking for something we feel is missing or just to get away. However, running doesn't mean problems where you land want happen. A great read,

First off let me say that I love Carl Weber books!! I have all of them in my collection so I was excited to read this one. I was greatly disappointed because this book was horrible. The entire story could've been summed up in a couple of chapters in another book. It was one long drawn out story of Rio going to Baltimore, going to clubs, and meeting a new love. Nothing really happened. The whole Rio being blamed for Corey's dad killing his gay workers including Corey through gotta right hand man who is also gay wasn't very exciting. I'm disappointed and I hope future books aren't written the same way, especially considering every book up until this point.

When I heard this book was coming out, I was a bit skeptical. I've been a fan of the Family Business Series since the beginning, but the last few books have not been up to standard with the first few. The character of Rio has always been played off of other people, and we never really seen if he can stand on his own or really dig deep into his character. I was hoping this book would do that but it didn't. You already knew what was going to happen two seconds into the book. No character development, no surprise moments, nothing. ***Spoiler Alert (kind of)*** The storyline of this book was briefly touched on in another book of the series (can't remember which one). Rio feels neglected, and that no one loves him. Rio runs off, Rio thinks he knows what he has gotten himself into, Rio gets in trouble, Paris saves the day, Rio realizes his family cares end of story.Overall I could've used the 12 bucks I spent on this book for something else. I really hope Carl just decides to let this series end. It's just not what it used to be.

Rio's story was very interesting because we sometimes get to the same place where he was and just need to go. Hedidn't think anyone in the family cared about him. His trip to Baltimore was crazy. Corey was dealing with his ownsexuality issues, Dre was being deceptive. Mona was mischievous and Diana was a friend to Corey. I enjoyed therelationship forming between Pierre and Rio. What I didn't like was that there was no closure with Corey's jailbird father who wanted Dre to kill his own son. He had a hatred for gay men and wanted all of the ones who worked forCorey killed. The sad thing is that he wanted Corey dead, a father. Should there have been some type of retaliationagainst him.I enjoy books written by this author.

Within the last year I have read all the Fam Business books all except the side book for Paris. I didn't really like her character in the book so i didn't feel a need to read her story. I did, however, draw a liking to Rio and wanted to know more about him so I was excited for this book to come out. I am reader who appreciates an author who can paint a realistic picture of a situation. This author did not. Everything seemed over the top for a situation that lasted only a week. It felt like Rio was in Baltimore for a while. It also seemed like they tried to tie in the homosexuality piece in the book with the plot and it seemed forced and dry. I am a big fan of the Family business series but the last couple of books just seem lack luster. Maybe they need to switch up the guest authors because the stories have not been the best. I am hoping the additional Fam Bus novels that are coming out soon will help bolster this series or I will have to hang it up.

I have the audio book and this was great as usual so much was unexpected so shocking.

What an amazing story I have been waiting to read a separate story about Rio and this book did not disappoint storyline and character development was well written and the characters kept you on your toes
