The grand moment in the reception finally arrived. Two white-gloved Tate conservators entered the room with a pair of paintings, each about five feet tall. There was a moment of respectful silence. Myatt was stunned.“Ahh, the Bissières, how lovely,”someone in the room whispered.Myatt cringed as the group praised the paintings and Drewe’s taste and generosity. The two works were carried around the room, and long before they reached Myatt, he recognized the faint but acrid smell of the varnish he had sprayed on them when he’d finished them a few weeks earlier.Myatt gripped his chair. If they so much as touched the canvas with a fine brush, the paint would give way and the game would be up. A little further investigative work would reveal that the pieces—purportedly painted more than forty years earlier—had been made with modern, ordinary house paint. The reception over, the Tate brass escorted Drewe and Myatt down the winding staircase. Stopping at a landing, one of the officials pointed at a place on the wall and said: “This is where we’ll hang these two wonderful pieces.”Placing a work at the Tate was a remarkable achievement for any artist—forger or not—but Myatt could see only one possible end to what had transpired. He had survived many low points in his past, but none as low as this. Surely he would end up in prison.Once in the taxi, Myatt, usually deferential toward Drewe, exploded. “You have to get them back.”Drewe argued that if they were to ask for the paintings back, it would involve a terrible loss of credibility, putting at risk all the time he had put into cultivating the confidence of the Tate’s archivists. But he also saw that as long as the twoc arelessly done forgeries remained in the hands of museum curators, Myatt would remain paralyzed by the fear that they would be his undoing. The following day Drewe was back at the Tate to withdraw the Bissières. There was a problem with their provenance, questions having to do with the previous owners. In place of the two works, he was prepared to offer a sizable cash donation to the Tate’s archives.Within days the Tate received a check for twenty thousand pounds (forty thousand dollars) to help catalog the archives, along with a promise of half a million more to come. With this donation, Drewe established himself as a respected donor for whom the doors of the heavily guarded archival department would stand open. The historical records of one of the world’s great museums, and its cherished credibility, were about to become irreparably compromised.

A large number of books have been published in recent years on the subject of fraudulent art. A few are autobiographical accounts, some are biographies, and many are academic studies on what motivates fakers, their techniques, and how they inject their phony works into the market. John Drewe, the central figure around whom the story of this book is built, is a uniquely clever and industrious con-man. As the title suggests, his complex swindle involved creating a bogus provenance for the fraudulent works he had commissioned. He insinuated himself into museum archives where he secretly inserted the forged documentation. It was a scheme that fooled much of the art establishment for years. Worse, he so debased the archives that they could never be entirely relied upon again. Provenance is a real life thriller and detective yarn, a factual account of a singular and elaborate scam. It provides a knowledgeable glimpse into the shady machinations, the greed and dangers of a secretive art world in which huge amounts of money change hands daily. It also delves into the strange world of John Drewe, a highly intelligent, inventive, but totally corrupt figure, a sociopath and pathological liar whose life is driven by falsehoods and fantasy. Provenance is a smoothly written and well researched book, a true account of remarkable events, one that is both instructive and pleasurable to read.

Wow! This is as good as any Tom Clancey or Grisham novel I have read!Although I had heard this was non-fiction, I was compelled in the middle of reading this book, to go online to see if Drewe and Myatt were, indeed, real people! And--they are real people!A fun and thought-provoking book!Kim BurdickStanton, Delaware

Published in 2009 after the death of one of the couple of authors this in depth presentation of an extraordinary series of art and documentation forgeries ever.Years of research were required to effectively present the deeds or misdeeds of John Drewe who seem to become the characters he pretended to be - a physicist, an heir to a remarkable art collection, a Mossad agent, a consultant to the British Atomic Energy Commission and the list goes on. All the while cleverly documenting and selling "modern masterpieces" to the leading dealers in London and elsewhere.John Myatt - failed painter is swept into this whirlwind of activity and doing a reasonably good job of creating masterpieces by Ben Nicholson, Roger Bissiere, Braques and Giacometti, Graham Sutherland et al.Drewe prepared an "authentic" provenance for each work and then used "runners" to present and sell them to the likes of Leslie Waddington, Daniel Stern, Peter Nahum among many others. Upwards of 200 works were made and sold.Drewe parlayed each meeting and relationship into a probable sale.Eventually he was caught and convicted but it took hard work, chance and luck to bring him down. He was never repentant and was also not out to embarrass the art world. Rather his success was aided by the lax standards where greed is involved.Although it is a tale related to the modern art world it seems more a story of the disintegration of moral and ethical standards in our world. The authors simply and clearly describe the facts and the events but the take away for me seems much more tragic and universal.

I very much enjoyed this book. I learned quite a lot about how the "art world" works. The story is a compelling one, the research seems solid, the writing is fluent and engaging, and the book is a remarkably easy read when you consider how much technical material is covered in it. The authors have a real knack for descriptive writing, making things that the reader cannot see real and solid in the mind's eye. However, there were three things that I found frustrating about the book. First, the lack of illustrations -- it seems as if the book would have been stronger if there had been images to help the non-expert understand the ways in which the forged pieces were good and the ways in which they fell short. Second, I was left with real curiosity about what Drewe had been doing prior to this scheme. I wish that the authors had managed to uncover this information. it seems odd to me that where they are willing to make educated guesses (always identified as such!) about other things, they had no theories to advance about this particular point. And finally, I find myself wondering where the painting Myatt says he did not do came from. These are minor quibbles, and should in no way stop anyone with an interest in art, in confidence games, or in interesting well-told stories from picking this book up and getting a great deal of enjoyment out of it.

Going with the Grain: Making chairs in the 21st century, 2nd Edition, by Mike Abbott

About the Author

Mike Abbott spent most of his childhood playing in the woods around his home near Bristol. After graduating with a degree in combined science, he returned to the countryside with a variety of jobs in amenity horticulture. While attending a course in arboriculture in 1976, Mike discovered Herbert Edlin’s inspiring book Woodland Crafts in Britain. From this he made his first pole-lathe and set about rediscovering the skills that had been all but lost. Two years later he undertook a course in recreation management which included a study of the recreational potential of small woodlands. Here he developed the concept of the ‘Living Wood’; no longer just a haunt for pheasants and wildlife but an environment where people could re-establish their contact with the natural world. After two years landscaping in Germany’s Black Forest, Mike returned to work in his home village near Bristol, supervising a youth-training scheme on a woodland restoration project. Here he was able to incorporate his new found love of woodland crafts and could see the fulfilment that this kind of work offered to his trainees. In 1985 he set up Living Wood Training with the aim of teaching green wood skills and promoting their potential. In 1989 he wrote his first book, Green Woodwork, and a year later gathered together a small group of enthusiasts to found the Association of Pole-lathe Turners which grew from a band of six in 1990 to an association of over 500 members within ten years. Over the past two decades, Mike has taught his skills for numerous organisations throughout Britain as well as in the USA, Sweden, Denmark and Finland. In 1993, he was joined in his venture by former green-wood pupil, Tamsin Allum, a talented artist, writer and craftsperson who shares Mike's passion for woodlands. Within a year of being together, they had bought a 10-acre woodland in Herefordshire together with five other people. They subsequently renamed it Clissett Wood after Philip Clissett, a local Victorian chairmaker whose former cottage abuts the wood. For ten years this woodland was the home to Mike’s courses in a workshop that he shared with fellow green woodworker Gudrun Leitz. Mike and Tamsin married in 1996. Since then they have lived in a cottage in East Herefordshire. In their spacious garden, they have built two traditional timber framed workshops with wattle-and-daub walls. Mike runs personal tuition and makes chairs in his workshop, while Tamsin creates stained glass illustrations in hers. As well as producing two delightful children they have also published a book entitled Living Wood - From Buying a Woodland to Making a Chair, written by Mike and illustrated by Tamsin. After 10 years of sharing the woodland workshop at Clissett Wood, Mike decided that he needed more time and space for his courses. Meanwhile Tamsin was developing her business in stained-glass, so in 2005 they sold their shares in Clissett Wood. Since then, Mike has established a new base at Brookhouse Wood which he rents from a tree-loving Farmer, four miles along the lane from their home. Mike has now finally achieved his main ambition; to live and work in the countryside in tune with the seasons. Each spring Mike and a group of volunteers reassemble the workshop structures and add new improvements to the woodland facilities. From May to September he runs his woodland courses with a break in July for a family holiday plus craft fairs and some personal tuition. In autumn he wraps up the workshop again for the winter. In the run up to Christmas he spends most of his time at home catching up on administration while giving Tamsin more time in the studio during her busiest season of the year. From January to March, Mike seizes the opportunity on sunny days, to pay his rent by carrying out woodland management at Brookhouse Wood. Otherwise his winter is split between making chairs, writing, running personal tuition and harvesting enough firewood to provide warmth for the cottage, the workshop and the studio.

What a lovely book. Perfect for someone wanting a project to use that drawknife and spokeshave. I found the writing interesting and the pictures fantastic. If you would like to build a chair on your own, using more basic methods then all those power machines, then this is for you.

more then a few spring projects.. well written easy to follow

Excellent book. Printed in the U.K. and uses both metric and Imperial measurements.

I realy like this book -- you see I am in it ,or my chair seat is !! Good chair making book

There are many photos in the book, very clearly ilustrated process of making chairs. The most valuable for me that for any chair discussed is given dimension of elements and shape of jigs for bending legs. New techics to make tenons on rungs is also very practical and easy to make. The book is amazing and worth any euro!!!

In this book one finds a rare mind in a rare discussion nowadays. America suffers from an absence of moral language to diagnose some of our social ills. Not an overbearing self righteous moral vocabulary employed by the religious (or secular) zealots but a cool, calm rational voice that takes careful measure of our moral resources, opportunities and limits. This book offers the latter. Masterfully written and articulated - sentence by sentence, argument by argument.

As far as the physical product itself, this was a sturdy and well-made paperback. As for the text itself, this was my first introduction to Niebuhr, and it really blew my mind. I'm currently on an inquiry into the concerns of intellectuals and politicians regarding the future of liberalism, and indeed Western society, after World War I, so this fit right in easily. Niebuhr voices profound concerns about the weaknesses of contemporary capitalism, socialism, communism, and their proponents. His solution--which he never quite articulates in a manner clear enough for my limited comprehension--is a recommitment to individual justice, Christian love, and compassion within a societal/group context. As many others have noted, he seems to foretell the coming of fascism in Germany, and the coming conflagration of World War II. Also, he clearly laid the groundwork for Martin Luther King, Jr.'s later nonviolence movement, and that's the next place I went in my readings.

This is the foundation work of political science. Niebuhr's emphasis of selfishness in any social group is now a key tenet of realism. His critical stance on love, morality and benevolence in group thinking is provocative and still relevant. The chapters on the mentality of the privileged class and the inevitability of social inequality are highly persuasive. This book is certainly a must-read for all.

The ideas that Mr. Niebuhr discusses in this book should be presented in an educational setting for the enlightenment of students who can then grapple with the problems inherent in all societies. I can think of many things that I wasted my youth on when my time could have been put to better use by studying these issues. I heard of Reinhold Niebuhr from Chris Hedges and Andrew Bacevich, two men whose opinions I respect and I thank them.

I am shocked at how relevant this book is to our current political climate and personal angst we gave in our nation and world. In some ways the actors have changed but the story is the same. This is a challenging book in that as the problem is revealed the solution gets more and more diffused and elusive. Nevertheless this book is worth the read.

I am ashamed to admit, I had never paid attention to writings of Niebuhr. After reading this book, I find myself quoting him regularly. It has provided insight into some fundamental queries I have carried for years regarding Christianity and American’s history.

Hard to read but a good challenge for my mind. Interesting guy. Glad we have more books of his to read.

This is a good book to read, we are moral being and the society is designed in a way that we walk away from ethic. It questions everything, read it and have fun with it.

From School Library Journal

Gr 9 Up—At 19, Elias is a talented and adventurous royal mapmaker for the powerful island nation of St. John del Mar, traveling the world in search of new lands to fill his maps. When he returns to his home city hoping to prepare for his next journey, he instead becomes entangled in a mystery spanning 18 years. Two cryptic maps may contain the clues to find the missing princes of del Mar, as well as Elias' father, once the Royal Navigator of the land. Joined by the young king, Ulises, and the inscrutable diplomat, Lady Mercedes, Elias uses his considerable skills and a bit of luck to unwind the tragic story hidden in the maps. Although this young adult fantasy's pages are graced with ghosts and sea-serpents, the real joy in this novel exists in the intrigue that sweeps readers along. Teens will be drawn to Elias and Mercedes's slow-burning romance—thankfully unhindered by an awkward third party—but plagued by ignorant and misplaced nationalist prejudice among the people of del Mar. St. John del Mar is a diverse nation, populated by a well-rounded cast of secondary characters who help or secretly hinder Elias's quest for truth. Above all, Lucier has crafted an exciting plot of attempted murder and betrayal that simmers just below the surface, right up to the breathtaking twist in the final pages. VERDICT Highly recommended where Tamora Pierce, V.E. Schwab, and Rachel Hartman are popular.—Ashley Fetterolf, Indian Creek Upper School, Crownsville, MD

This may have become one of my favorite reads of 2018! I loved the characters, although Elias was probably my least favorite and I can't really put my finger on why. I wasn't expecting this to have such a big mystery, but it was the perfect blend of a fantasy setting with a major mystery that needed to be solved. I absolutely could NOT put this book down and I had to know who it was that kidnapped the two young princes. I had my suspicions, but I didn't really know who it was until the big reveal! The only thing that I wish had been added was a more detailed version of the map that matched the one described in the book, since maps and mapmaking is such a huge part of this book.

This book was the absolute best mix of everything I love: fantasy, mystery, adventure, and a little romance. I really enjoyed watching the mystery unravel. Elias and Mercedes were very interesting and fun to watch. Great book!

A definite yes for Tamora Pierce fans! Unexpected and delightfully welcome! Lures you in and keeps you turning page after page...Or lying in bed thinking your way through, should you reluctantly need to put the book down for something as tedious as sleep...but when you're already up half the night, what's a few more pages??!So. Good.

I enjoyed the story, world, and characters. I found myself liking the least mentioned character the most.

Excellent read. I love the characters. I really hope that there will be more books coming.

My daughter (14 years old) and I both greatly enjoyed this book. Wonderful character development and fun adventures with mystery and intrigue. I hope there are more to come.

Very interesting and I like the culture and character the author created

I went into Isle of Blood and Stone not knowing exactly what to expect. The reviews I had seen had been slightly mixed; however, the synopsis still greatly intrigued me. I wanted to know more about Elias, the newly discovered maps, and the tragedy that happened 18 years ago.The result? Isle of Blood and Stone completely WOWED me! I LOVED this book! There's so much to like about the Isle of Blood and Stone, and one of the aspects I enjoyed the most was the world building. World building within fantasy can be a huge miss-or-hit, in my opinion. It can make-or-break a book; however, here it built the book up beautifully. I appreciated the level of detail Makiia gave to the kingdom of Del Mar. I enjoyed learning about the kingdom's history: its princes, its feuds, its fights, and its mapmakers. I also liked that Makiia didn't stop just there; instead, she gave offered a picture of the kingdom's surroundings- the different islands, the deadly forest, etc.Isle of Blood and Stone's plot mainly focusses on the mystery surrounding the disappearance of the two princes and Lord Antonni. The prologue gives the first look into what happened the day, and it did a fantastic job of hooking me in. As the book continues, we're quickly thrown into a thrilling adventure, as Elias races to figure out the clues before it's too late. I thought everything contained just the perfect amount of suspense - enough to keep me interested and committed to the story but never feeling too overwhelmed or thinking that certain twists were thrown in for no real purpose but thrill. I also enjoyed that even at the end - when you thought everything large had been revealed - Makiia still had some tricks up her sleeve.Last but not least the characters! The majority of Isle of Blood and Stone is told through Elias's perspective, and I truly enjoyed seeing through his eyes. Elias is an interesting mixture between fearless and scared, brave and cautious. When the book first begins, Elias doesn't view himself as anything incredibly special. Sure, he inherited his father's mapmaking abilities, but he doesn't believe he comes close to being even a quarter of the hero his father was. This quality made Elias more human, in my opinion, and what I really appreciated was the fact that Elias didn't use this feeling to knock himself down; instead, it was more of a doubt, a feeing lurking in the distance. I think it's something that anyone can relate to - feeling as if they'll never live up to the person they're claimed to be "just like" - and Makiia truly captured this feeling perfectly here. I loved seeing Elias grow as the book progressed. He became such a kick-a$$ individual, saving the day more than once.I also liked seeing him evolve in his relationships. His friendship with Mercedes, for instance, was sweet yet spicy. I liked the bond between them, the-push-and-the-pull. Mercedes kept him on his toes that's for sure. Not to mention they were also great partners. Even though there wasn't many scenes with his family, it was easy to see what a loving, caring relationship was there as well. It was easy to see how much he valued his stepfather, his mother, and his siblings, which made the feelings he felt about finding his father even more complex. Was he willing to risk everything - his siblings' s standings, the status of his mother's marriage - for a man that may have been hiding all these years? It was a hard choice. Last but not least: Reyna, the real show stealer! Reyna, a young mapmaker-in-training, is courageous, poised yet bold. I loved seeing her assist Elias with the maps, and I loved the trouble she would get herself in. Nothing got in her way! I've heard the follow-up will be about her, and if that's true, I can't wait!Overall, Isle of Blood and Stone is a standout 2018 release! I can't suggest it highly enough to fans of YA fantasy, especially to those who love Kristin Cashore. It's the kind of book you can't help but read in one sitting. I wanted to spread it out over a few days - savor the plot, the characters, the setting - but I just couldn't, it was too hard.

Jung's "Synchronicity" is an essay about those moments when everything just seems to come together. Jung defined synchronicity as "the coincidence in time of two or more causally unrelated events which have the same meaning". Synchronicity is a cluster of meaningful patterns that normal cause and effect has not caused. Synchronicity is acausal. Beyond cause as we know it. A bridge between the known and the unknown, between the conscious and the unconscious. Though there have been others from the West that have expanded upon Jung's thoughts concerning synchronicity this is still a very good place to start. For further reading I would suggest looking to Jean Shinoda Bolen and F. David Peat, among others. For an Oriental perspective regarding acausality, synchronicity, may I suggest the "I Ching" and "Tao Te Ching". Lao Tzu, the author of "Tao Te Ching", is the father of Taoism. As Barbara Marx Hubbard has said, "The spiral of our evolutionary progress is turning back in time to reconnect with the great sage Lao Tzu". Taoism is a way of life that attempts to live in harmony with the unity of the universe by following the natural grain of things, of going with the flow. Wisdom is timeless and knows no bounds. In "Synchronicity" Jung was trying to describe to the Western mind, his own included, the phenomenon of the alignment of universal forces with one's own life experiences. Much like Quantum Physics, Jungian Pyschology was beginning to leave behind the mechanistic universe of the 18th and 19th Centuries and starting to view reality as an organic whole. Our leading thinkers were becoming more than mere observers, they were becoming participants. Objectivity and subjectivity were merging. There are no lines of demarcation in nature, rather there are merely areas of confluence. Everything is interconnected. With Jung chance met design.Synchronicity though subjective by nature, is scientific. Cynical skeptics will point out that the theory is not "Scientifically" verifiable because synchronicity is not quantifiable. That synchronicity is nothing more than magic, fantasy. The fact that the "Scientific Method" these same skeptics cherish was channeled via a series of dreams, including a dream within a dream, to Rene Descartes strikes me as ironic to say the least. Subjectivity created their system for objecting to subjectivity. Can't we all just get along? To quote Einstein, "As far as the laws of mathematics refer to reality, they are not certain, and as far as they are certain, they do not refer to reality". All attempts to describe anything exactly fall short. Our best theorys are models of reality, not reality itself. Most, if not all, of our greatest scientists have also been mystics, or at least had a mystical experience. The "Promethean Impulse" or "Divine Inspiration" that has been granted to our greatest minds is not make believe. The answers to many of our scientific questions have come in the form of dreams, or other non-rational states of consciousness. It took a dreamer to realize that the Earth is round. There is always something new to learn. Jung was no charlatan. He was an optimist. He believed in our ability to grow and change. He spoke from personal experience tempered by thoughtful meditation. He claimed that the Universe is no coincidence and neither are we. I agree. Read Jung.

Absolute classic! Jung is the guy who introduced the term, he was friends with Wolfgang Pauli, the physicist who came up with the Pauli exclusion principle, which is central to understanding the structure of atoms.Scientists were much more "mystical" back then. Seems like it was more fun back in the day, but these ideas are coming around again, even since the Aspect's verification of the Bell inequalities almost for decades ago ...Now with quantum entanglement on the tip of everyone's tongue, I feel like this book is worth a read. One note - it's a little dry, I would say deliberately. Jung is trying to be scientific and concise, about a very difficult subject. BUT if you are looking for a "Gee Wiz, isn't the world crazy and cool?!?" type of book, this is not for you.Oh, and I couldn't resist:A connecting principle,Linked to the invisibleAlmost imperceptibleSomething inexpressible.Science insusceptibleLogic so inflexibleCausally connectibleYet nothing is invincible.

This work by Jung is a fascinating look at the subjective experience of being a human mind in a physical universe. He begins the book with the following statements:1) Natural laws are statistical truths, which means that they are completely valid only when we are dealing with macrophysical quantities.2) The philosophical principle that underlies our conception of natural law is causality.3) Their [Acausal events] existence - or at least their possibility - follows logically from the premise of statistical truth.4) But if the causal principle is only relatively valid, then it follows that even though in the vast majority of cases an apparently chance series can be causally explained, there must still remain a number of cases which do not show any causal connection.5) Chance groupings or series seem, at least to our present way of thinking, to be meaningless, and to fall as a general rule within the limits of probability.6) Should this proof (of acausal events exceeding the limits of probability) be forthcoming, however, it would prove at the same time that there are genuinely non-causal combinations of events for whose explanation we should have to postulate a factor incommensurable with causality.7) Because of this quality of simultaneity, I have picked the term "synchronicity" to designate a hypothetical factor equal in rank to causality as a principle of explanation.8) Meaningful coincidences - which are to be distinguished from meaningless chance groupings - therefore seem to rest on an archetypal foundation. From this basis Jung explores paraphychology, astrology from an archetypal basis, the I Ching and other forms of divination, near-death experiences, and radioactive decay. From this and in discussion with Wolfgang Pauli he formulated the tetradic schema of our quantum based physical existence: Indestructible Energy-Causality-Synchronicity-Space Time Continuum. We are all aware of both meaningless and meaningful coincidences in our daily lives. They are the basis for surprises and superstition, and decision making. For instance, in business we deal with staffing issues in the retail environment. Managers determine by experience and analysis the number of employees needed to serve the average number of customers that will enter the store. However, we also know that they come in random clusters or retail statistical fluctuations that necessitate additional personnel to maintain customer service levels and avoid losses in sales during these surges. These represent meaningless coincidences but ones which we must prepare for.As a reader I often experience what seem like meaningful coincidences like a new vocabulary word suddenly occurring in each new text I read. Or picking up books in my library that I have owned for years that I only now feel are relevant for the zeitgeist. Perhaps these are instances of awareness but I often wonder at their significance. However, I decided to write this review today because I feel I am in the midst of a synchronous experience. At three in the morning of November 10th of this year, the town of Marlinton (the countyseat of a neighboring county) began to burn and lost a block of its business district due to constant winds that made it impossible for the firefighters to contain the blaze. That morning I awoke to learn of this ongoing event and to also learn it was the anniversary of the wreak of the Edmund Fitzgerald which as the song reminds us occurred "...when the gales of November come early". Unable to sleep in the early morning hours of the 11th of November I picked up "The Skrayling Tree" by Michael Moorcock, a writer who incorporates the archetypes of Dr. Jung as the basis for his fantasy multiverse. As I turned to Chapter Two of the book I was stunned by its title: "On the Shores of Gitche Gumee" - the Chippewa name for Lake Superior where the men of the Edmund Fitzgerald lost their lives. Are these meaningful coincidences, a synchronicity? If you are interested in science of synchronicity or the role of archetypes in the mystic arts you should read this insightful work by one of the great thinkers of psychology and the nature of the human experience.

Excellent reference book, with beautiful images.

This book has so many collectible beads and descriptions that it is helpful in identifying beads and their origin. However, I had hoped there would be more beads or characteristics that would help one identify a bead by the type of bead it is.

Was well received by experienced beader. The history of beading is quite diverse and the colored photos are awe inspiring

Very informative book on the subject and lots of very clear colour pictures which are helpful.

Received as described

A wonderful and very desciptive history of beads. Excellent quality photos, this book can used to help the novice or the serious bead collector.

Beautiful photos and layouts of amazing jewelry! Great inspirational book for jewelry makers. Very informative regarding the history of beads!

This is a work of immense proportions. Robert Liu is both a scholar and an artist. This is a work which draws on both sets of skills, and the result is wonderful. For bead lovers it's a definative work. As a scholarly piece, it likely has material of interest to those interested in art history and world culture as well. It's an important book and one that would be sorely missed if it ever went out of print--I say this as one who's passed on books like this, only to search the world over for them when they were no longer available...get this one now. You won't regret it.
