I am a TCM student in my 2nd year of Master's program for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. This is probably my favorite book so far for herbals. Layout is much like the Materia Medica for individual herbs, but formatted for formulas instead. Very good explanations and comparisons of formula modifications and other similar formulas. Highly reccommend for all TCM students!!

I've relied on this book extensively for my schooling, board exams, and clinical practice. More than just a formulary, it gives you details of the historical development of formulas, and the TCM-based thinking for how and why they function. Each herb is explained in relation to the other herbs. These insights are crucial if you want to take your learning from just memorization to having a deeper wisdom of how the TCM formulas operate. I had some good herbal teachers in school and this book is rich enough in its details that I can recapture some of the amazing insights I learned from those teachers, through this text.

Great book and a must have for all Acupuncture doctors and students. Tons of information about herbs and formulas. The leading textbook in Traditional Chinese Medicine. A wealth of knowledge. I love just reading random chapters and learning and being amazed at this 3000 year old medicine.

Fabulous book! Large too. Not for lugging around. But very well written. I am very happy with the sheer enormous number of formulas and variations included, as well has discussions on each herb's contribution to the formula.

The text is extremely useful for anyone studying Traditional Chinese Medicine. However some of the concepts will be confusing to anyone grounded in Western medical concepts.

I have a number of books similar to this - I enjoy reading on the origins of some of the idioms and cliches, etc. in our language. This is not one of my favorites. It is well-organized (alphabetical) but many of the entries are incorrect (the author was especially ignorant of many of the phrases that originated on sailing ships of the British and American Navies of yesteryear) and attributed those to civilian-based origins, and many other sailing ship phrases were ignored (example: Getting Down to Brass Tacks, Four Sheets to the Wind, etc). This book might be valuable to easily look up a phrase that you hear and are curious about but the information may or may not be complete or accurate. I also found that I lost interest very quickly in reading it (cover to cover) - unlike other similar books, such as the Imponderable series of books by author David Feldman - those were fun to read and reasonably well-researched. I would suggest potential readers look elsewhere than this book, but maybe that's just me.

While a few of the 'clichés' are interesting, most of them are so obvious, anyone could figure it out. A couple examples from the book: "His days are numbered - Fate is closing in on him; his death is near" and "Second to None - as good as any competitor." The author cites the first time the phrase was supposedly used. I've found other books on this topic to be much more interesting.

I guess I expected more 'informative' information about the origin of such phrases rather than just how each phrase was typically used. I assumed we all would know what 'to heave a sign of relief' meant, but I was curious how it came about. His explanations are mainly research of the first time the phrase might have been recorded or used. All in all I was a bit disappointed but it's my fault. I should have purchased a book intending to give the origin of use not just a dictionary. But I do think it covers most cliches.

This is a great party book and was given to a friend who is not from the USA. They enjoyed learning about American English cliches.

This was a disappointing publication without the depth or breadth of information I was expecting.

My friend and I each got one. We went through a stage where everywhere we went...everyone we met was using a cliche of some sort. We really began to wonder where do the cliches come from. This book is succinct in its descriptions. We both love it and frankly one of us has a copy with us at all times. Its become a game of sort.

We are always trying to figure out the origin of sayings. This book is pretty good. May not have all the ones I was looking for, but the most common are definitely there. I'll probably leave it at work. I work with people from different countries and we discuss our funny American sayings all the time.

This book is supposed to include 87 case studies. Naturally this is a part of the course, so borrowing this book is useless because the case studies are NOT included. The "key code" for them has been used and no new key code was given to me. When I contacted Human Kinetics (the company who published the book), they said Amazon needs to give out the new key code. What a sham this all is. We're STUDENTS. We shouldn't get a book only to discover it's only half the book.

This is a very useful overview of the several branches of law as they apply to sport and recreation. It includes a chapter on risk management; though I would suggest further reading specific to that subject for the sport manager.

I love Making Words activities because I can do so many different things with them. I also love that this book is multilevel. I am studying to be a reading specialist and this has been a great resource for the students I've been tutoring as part of my course work. There are many words to make, and you can use the table of contents or index to find words that fit your needs. The only problem I've had so far is that it is pretty tough to get the pages of letter cards to copy correctly - the front and back of the page have to perfectly align on the photocopy, and that is not an easy task unless you wish to tear the pages out of your book and send them through the copier that way. I ended up retyping the letter rows into a Word table and printing those instead. I made the same comment about Making Big Words. This book provides a lot of lesson options in one source.

I use these with all of my Grades 1-3 classrooms to help support phonics instruction. The lessons are clear, the letter cards are great (especially if you copy the vowels in a different color). I only wish there was a suggested grade level - for beginning teachers to use.
