About the Author

Mark Ferguson is Program Director of the Junior Year in Munich – the oldest U.S. college-sponsored study abroad program in Germany – and Senior Lecturer in German at Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan. He holds a Ph.D. in German from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His interest in education abroad began at a young age beginning with his participation in the American Field Service program to Thailand while in high school. Throughout his college career – both undergraduate and graduate – he gained extensive international experience by living, studying, working and teaching in Europe (Paris, Freiburg, Mainz, Berlin, Bonn, Duisburg, Essen). Before coming to Wayne State University in 1991, he held positions as lecturer in German literature at the University of Essen in Germany and at Bates College in Maine. Since his appointment as Program Director of the Junior Year in Munich in 1995, he has helped many students build upon their study abroad experience to find jobs and start interesting, meaningful and well-paying careers.

I was very disappointed in this book. To me, if it's an "encyclopedia," it should be the most comprehensive listing of Yo Mama jokes. This book had a little over 100 I think. Lots of other books out there have more than that. Also, the production quality was terrible. I literally could've printed a better copy at home. I've attached a picture to show how little proofing was done (with the section titles on a separate page than the jokes). And last, the jokes weren't that great. My kids come up with better ones than that. The one picture I attached demonstrates that as well. My advice is to go with a different book. Not sure why it has a "best seller" medal on the front. I guess because people buy it because they were sucked in by the word "encyclopedia" too. :(

Skimpy book with a small number of jokes, many not funny, printed unprofessionally, as if from a printer without any layout.

This book is so funny! I laughed so much that I had tears. I let my sister read it and she was laughing and laughing. What a good book! This book really made my expectations. A very good read!

In my stack of books on organization and management, none do the job of untangling my soul from my stuff quite like Uncluttered. It’s wonderfully practical with life application flowing through each chapter. But beyond that, Uncluttered helped my soul find a little breathing room. I am learning to listen to what my heart is hungry for and find satisfaction in God. You can go through the motions of tidying up the outside, but if we don’t look within, it’s just that–motions.I love Courtney’s writing style–equal parts witty and poignant. It doesn’t take her long to move past the pile of mail on the counter and the over-stuffed closet you’re afraid to open. She draws a straight line from our stuff to our soul. She helps us see the way we try to fill our soul with more stuff, and how these efforts leave us frustrated, overwhelmed, and sometimes broke. It’s hard to read a compelling book like Uncluttered and not make some kind of changes in your life--changes beyond tidying up.

Uncluttered tackles all areas of your life! Courtney does a fantastic job of sharing her and her families journey of uncluttering while still acknowledging the daily struggle to live that way in today’s world. Courtney is real and relatable, I felt like I was hanging out with my high school best friend when reading her words! Great job Courtney!

I found myself reading Uncluttered this winter, in a season of releasing distractions. My husband and I have stripped our lives down to basics a few times in our 17 year relationship, but the past five years of becoming parents, buying our first home, and hanging on for career rides added up to too much again. We were already experimenting with stripping down our family's calendar when I picked up Courtney's book, and I'd read Abraham Herschel's Sabbath last year and caught the vision (but not the backbone for follow through).Courtney's practical nudges have resulted in recognizable change. We've actually been scratching the itch to shed layers of build-up after living in the same place for a while. I've finally made the switch I've talked about for years: moving my phone charging station out of my bedroom, away from my nightstand. As simple as it is, it's enough of a change to help me relax into better sleep and wake to healthier habits in the mornings. (My husband followed suit and pulled the TV out of our room as well.) I've beefed up my intentions and follow through in saying No more often. I've been reminded of the vision behind simplified hospitality. And we're talking about instituting a better Sabbath rhythm as an entire family.Most notably, I've been spending more time in awareness of God's voice in my life. Stillness and smallness has room to thrive when I create more space.As Courtney shares, "An uncluttered mind—freed from digital distraction, unhealthy preoccupation with possessions, and an overburdened schedule—will begin to awaken to spiritual realities all around."

If you like natural history illustrations, here are some wonderful images nicely reproduced. The radiolarians are my favorite and Haeckel did a supurb job delineating them as well as jellyfish and siphonophores . These images are slightly different in form and function compared to Haeckels masterpiece Art Forms in Nature. Here the plates are earlier works and more purely representational while in Art Forms...where the images are arranged in a more sophisticated way and a little more styalized.If you like Haeckel you will have fun with this book.

With lots of gorgeous pictures in large format this is a companion volume to Haeckel's monumental " Kunstformen der Natur ( Art Forms in Nature )" because it shows a number of plates that are missing in Art Forms in Nature, for instance, on page 130 ( Radiolarians Plate 117 with Circorrhegma dodecahedra). It is desirable to publish a sturdy hardcover edition.

Great discussion of where Microsoft is headed currently. It is oriented at fairly novice programmers and walks at a nice pace though how to program. Thus the book doesn't go into depth on more sophisticated/special purpose functionality. Not the best examples (in comparison to those in the Nutshell series), but a nice clear writing style makes the topics quite understandable. Great book to get started and to piece together the many technologies popping out of Redmond these days!

Title should be prefixed with "Introduction to". Topics are not covered in much detail or with notable clarity. Probably better to get a good bock on C#7 and a separate one for dotnet core. I don't see any value in keeping it after the first read.

Excellent reference. Very well written.

I found this book really useful to start developing on Mac. The first chapters are very detailed and understandable. Later in the book is more dense and explanations are not enough for a beginner like me.

First of all, ten stars for Malala! Ten stars for her health, her stamina, her courage, and her brilliance!But truth be known this was a difficult book to read. I think it needed better editing. I kept getting lost in the timeline. For example, the way I read it, Malala was fourteen when she was shot. I knew that wasn't the case. Also, the first part of the book was so choppy that I almost gave up reading the book. I only continued because I wanted to learn about this fascinating teen.History has never been my favorite subject. It wasn't until a brilliant teacher in college did I begin paying attention. Let's face it, history is about men and their wars. Women are rarely the stars. So when a book about a female who is making history, gets bogged down in the wars, I started losing interest. When the war affects Malala and her family, then I felt involved again. Then I was glad for the bit of a history lesson that was set up in the book. Wish there had been a smoother way to move from personal story to the region's history.I hope, hope, hope that Malala writes more books. I hope she finds friends. I hope her mother can get on with her own education and can stand and give a few speeches of her own. I hope the family becomes more feminist so that mother can have her own life. I wish the family all the goodness life can give.

My 11-year old son read this and was so touched and inspired by Malala's story. He normally only likes to read sci-fi, so I was shocked when he came back to me after reading the book with tears in his eyes, saying how grateful and inspired this book was for him. Nothing has ever moved him the way this story did. I highly recommend this story to any Tweens and teens. It is sure to inspire empathy and understanding.

I checked the audiobook out from the library, forgetting that I had bought the ebook when it was on sale... because I'm that sort of person. As amused and annoyed as I was with myself when I realized this, I actually ended up getting a better experience with the book this way. Malala speaks at the beginning and end of the book, and there's her UN speech as well. So, the audio version is definitely worth listening to.It's pretty emotional, hearing about how so many children in Pakistan are unable to be educated because their poor and/or female. I think it was very important of her to point out that the biggest issue with the ignorance there is because of this lack of education. These people are studying their holy text, but aren't understanding the words. That's something to be said of all religions. It's scary what happens when the uneducated come into power and twist a holy book to their desires. And knowing she stood up for her education despite the threats, she is amazing. Truly.I introduced my 5 year old son to the story of Malala last year, we own a couple picture books about her. I wanted him to know how important it is for all people to be given the opportunity to be educated. Also, I want to raise him to understand that there is no type of person better than another - people of all races, religions, genders, etc. all deserve the same opportunities.To me, the worst part of this was knowing there was a period of time when her father regretted letting her choose an education over her safety. I cannot even imagine the grief her parents went through.I've been reading a lot of non fiction lately, and I've noticed there is a lot of rambling in them. This book didn't have that. It is a fascinating story and I am so glad she lived through being shot. I wish I could afford to go to her talk in Houston, I expect it is going to be great.

This book is an autobiography of Malala Yousafzai. She wrote about her experience in Pakistan and the effect that the Taliban had on her, her family, and the society. She’s very courageous as a national leader. As a young woman in a country where individual groups and traditional civilians want her silence, Malala didn’t hold anything back when talking about her story. She is authentic and bold. The book also had her parents perspective on the situation in which they went through. Her parents had a significant impact on her and her leadership as of today.I thought that the book was thorough. The story was in chronological order; it made it easier for the readers to follow. She also gave a short but essential background of the society and of her parents which all had affected her and the person she became today. If the reader didn’t know about the culture or her parent's history, they wouldn’t understand why people are inspired by her or what the current situation in Pakistan had on her. She didn’t mention much about her two brothers. Knowing about them would allow us to see their perspective on her as a sister as she is straying from the norm.An important theme that I found compelling is persistence. Malala didn’t give up her passion for education and even risked her life to be educated. Malala values education and school not only for herself but all the girls and boys. When the Taliban bombed schools and forced girls to stay home instead of going to schools, Malala tried everything in her power (interviews, diary, documentary) to be able to attend classes again. Even when shot in the head, she didn’t give in. She turned a local issue into a worldwide discussion.Another theme is gender roles in Pakistan. Women aren't treated equally as men, but instead, the society represses women. Malala grew up with parents that are more liberal which allow her to have more freedom. That is not typically in Pakistan. Malala came to the leader not just for the people in Pakistan, but for all (girls/children) around the world. Because she is a young woman and fight for her rights to be educated, she is slowly changing the society and their view on gender roles.I truly enjoyed the book. Knowing Malala's story made me admire her even though I’ve never met her. I’m also motivated and is inspired to better my education and keep on pushing myself even when it is difficult. She is a role model for everyone. Women, girls, and boys will enjoy reading this book. They could benefit from reading this book by being more motivated, courageous, and to speak up for what is right. Also, anyone who wants to know more about life in Pakistan and Malala’s experience in that society should read it. The book thoroughly talked about her experience in Pakistan and her work.

I was unable to read this book, because of the lack of contrast with background and print.

Wow after reading this cookbook I am please with its simplicity. Each recipe is marked with prep time and cook time along with labels for gluten free, vegetarian, etc. No calorie counts but she thought about everything else. Well laid out. If you don't want to go with store bought marinara or chicken stock, the back chapter has full recipes. I love that! I want to make just about all the recipes in this book! Can't wait to try a few. I've had my Dutch oven in storage after my move so I am bringing it from the basement to the kitchen tonight!

First of all, I have to say, I am a Dutch Oven lover! When I have cooked with dutch ovens over coals, there is nothing like the flavor of the food that is cooked this way. Now, move over hot coals, welcome to the beauty of cast iron cookware in the kitchen.There is some good beginning information such as Why Dutch Oven cooking is so great, care and maintenance, how to choose the right equipment and lots of good information to help you with learning this style of cooking.There is the 5- tool kitchen, the 5-ingredient pantry, staples and shopping lists, and then the meat of the book - The Recipes.The book is divided into 10 different chapters:Dutch Oven BasicsBreakfast & BrunchSnacks, Apps & SlidesMains: BeefMains: Chicken & TurkeyMains: Pork & LambMains: Fish & ShellfishMains: VegetarianBreads & DessertsStaples & SaucesThe author has also included the list of the Dirty Dozen & Clean Fifteen foods, Measurement Conversions, and Recipe Index.Some of the recipes just are mouth-watering such as teh Ham, Swiss, Spinach and Mushroom Frittata. One of my favorites is the Roasted Veggie Medley with Brown Butter and Garlic. The recipe only calls ofr Brussels sprouts, broccoli and carrots, but I love this with sweet potatoes, cauliflower, and asparagus. But that is the beauty of the recipes, you can customize them to fit your tastes.Another recipe that is very tasty (but not healthy in any way) is the homemade peach cobbler. Cobblers do very well in dutch oven cooking. Roasts are very good as well, covered with onions, vegetables and stock.The recipes are very easy to follow and they turn out tasting so good! The Chicken Tortellini Soup is very good. It is definitely worth your while to try this book.I did receive a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for my unbiased review. I would highly recommend this cookbook.

Get in my belly! I'm a sucker for easy recipes and I was sold on this cookbook before I ever tried a recipe. 5 ingredients or less? Sign me up! I also have a dutch oven that I have RARELY used, so I was excited to dust it off and try it out again. There are oven 100 recipes in this bad boy and I've already tried out 5. Granted I can't use like half (I'm vegetarian), but the ones I could use were MONEY! They even have a whole vegetarian section (some of which were even vegan)! Besides using the vegetarian section I was able to pull recipes from the breakfast & brunch, snacks, & sides, breads & desserts, and staples & sauces. Options man! Some great recipes include: buttery mashed potatoes with chive, creamy spinach-Parmesan dip, veggie fried rice, savory fried cabbage and noodles, peach cobbler, and cornbread! All in a dutch oven! My only two "complaints" are: lack of pictures and not all recipes are truly 5 ingredients are less. The author doesn't includes seasoning and oils, so some recipes are closer to 10 ingredients. That wouldn't stop me from purchasing this book though! I loved it!
