From unexpected places come gold. This book dropped my jaw. The concept of acquired savant like abilities as well as information about medications and diet that are well worth the book. My money was well spent. Grade A.

Very good

A really easy read. Love the content.

Very disappointed by this book. The claim is that the abilities of synesthetes will in some way be available to us mere mortals ( or the more politically correct neurotypicals) so that we can be ultimately smarter. Synesthetes are people who hear colors or tastes sounds, for example. We are introduced to people who became this way by virtue of some damage at birth, or by virtue of some physical trauma, a blow to the head, for example. Well, it turns out that the ideas presented as ways to achieve synesthete-like awesomeness, like improve memory, etc. are mostly all old hat. For example, the mnemonic suggestions to improve memory have been around for as long as I can remember (tee hee), going back to Harry Lorraine and Jerry Lucas' books. We are also told about how the mind can solve problems during sleep, the way Kekule came up with the benzine ring. Again, "sleeping on it" as a way to come up with ideas and problem solve has been around forever (or maybe longer). We are also offered ways to quickly multiply large numbers. I've got one too - my calculator. And then we are shown how we can name the day of the week for any date of any year, an unbelievably useful skill. Throughout we are bombarded with descriptions of neurobiology, brain scans, retinas and other body parts located above the neck that help us think and create. We are also presented with some futuristic solutions way out on the horizon, some of them extremely speculative and very risky. Sorry, but I'll stick with the mediocre mush currently in my skull exactly as it is. To sum - a lot was promised but very little was delivered.

interesting but hard to follow

Awesome read. She did a good job of writing it in a way that's easy to understand for people like me who dove into it without any prior knowledge in the subject.

I was actually looking for a particular book when I came across "The Superhuman Mind." After reading the first three chapters, I immediately purchased a copy, and I am so grateful that I did. Thank you for a book well written. I have learned a great deal.

Pretty interesting book. It touched on a lot of subjects and briefed many different kids of "superhuman" abilities. Definitely a good read and a solid 4 stars.

#47,500 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

First, let me say that I believe in angels and ask for their help and guidance on a regular basis, so my review is not based on any doubt that the subject matter is not real... I consider myself to be very spiritual rather than religious, so I'm not basing this on Christian beliefs or any other religion, but rather, I'm basing this on my common sense, or what felt true to me..The book itself is very interesting. I listened to it on audible and the narrator did a very good job.. But I found myself listening to some parts of it thinking, somethings just not right about this...As a child, the angels gave her a vision of her husband to be, telling her they would not grow old together, he would be very ill and she would have to take care of him.. Why would angels burden a young child with that knowledge? She also says the angels told her when her father would be dying, and there's a point in time when she and her fathers souls unite and become one... Why?She says there was a baby who was deceased laying next to a road near a bridge.. She was told over and over again to go near that bridge, though she didn't realize why.. Eventually, the angels brought a baby's soul to her and her husbands bed, and told her the baby was to lay with them in order to feel loved so it could cross over.. The story was disjointed and made no sense whatsoever.. How could Lorna show a baby she had no connection to, love? She says she had her back to the baby but could feel it move. She was afraid to roll over for fear of smothering it or hurting it.. But wasn't it a soul, not a human baby? That whole story was very confusing..She speaks a lot about how her family treated her as if she was retarded.. I kept waiting for her to explain why they felt that way, but she never did say.. I have since watched her on utube, and she explains she was dyslexia, which they did not understand back then, so she can't read or write properly... Okay, I guess that does make sense..She says on interviews that she can't write, but the angels tell her how and what to write, and that's how she's written books.. I read an article where the interviewer said Lorna has a computer program that writes down what she says..Interviewers seem very taken with her and feel she's the real deal.. Maybe she is, but I still have to question so many things she wrote in this book. Many reviewers have called her new age, and to some degree, she is, but on the flip side, she talks about satan and hell and says they are real.. That isn't new age... She says Satan basically stalked her for a very long time (it seemed to be years?), before confronting her.. She says God was there, standing by, watching, to test Lorna to see what she would do... That isn't the God I know.. He doesn't test us to watch us fall... That isn't new age thinking at all..She talks a lot about how certain people only trusted her to help them and she kind of seems like she's patting herself a great deal on the back about healings.. She almost sounds like she sees herself as a Jesus figure.. I'm not trying to put words in her mouth, that's just the way I felt while listening to the book.. Yet, when I've listened to her on interviews, she's quick to say it isn't her gift, it's the angels working through her.. Listening to the book, I felt that perhaps she had been made to feel insignificant by her family, and the fact that strangers were drawn to her for help, made her feel good about herself..She speaks about her husbands death, the first death, and says she begged God to let him stay a little longer.. She says God told her okay, he could stay, but Lorna was never to ask him again, this was a one time thing.. I saw her talking about that on a utube interview.. She says God was very angry with her for asking and she knew he wasn't pleased with her...When her husband was dying the 2nd time, she knew better than to ask God to spare him again..That makes no sense to me... Aren't we suppose to pray to God to heal and protect our loved ones.. Would God really get mad because she dared to ask for her husband to be spared??The descriptions she gives of what the angels look like seem a little out there.. And she speaks a lot of how they made her invisible when needed, and at other times, presented themselves in human form, and other people saw her walking with them..There were events the angels warn her about involving other people, but they don't allow her to warn the person who will be involved in it.. Why would they do that? What would be the point? You know, really, I hope she is the real deal.. I do believe our angels are with us all the time.. I believe each and everyone of us do have a guardian angel that is with us all our lives... Many things she says are comforting and ring true, but there are just some parts of her story that just made me wonder...

I couldn't put the book down. Very interesting and engaging. However, if you are not open to the possibility of angels and spirits constantly surrounding you, you may have a hard time believing Lorna's story. If you know that you are a spiritual being having a human experience, this book may help you better understand the role of angels in our lives.

Lorna Byrne is a beautiful soul, but I ended up skimming her book a lot. I didn't care so much what the angels looked like and there's a lot of angel description. I didn't know why her parents and family thought she was retarded. She didn't explain that at all. Given she wrote an articulate book requiring analysis and complex thought, that omission kind of bothered me. I have to guess that she just seemed spacy given how she was interacting with the angels all the time.It didn't end up being that fascinating a book. The angels would tell her where to look or what was going to happen and after a while, it became repetitive. I like her a lot, though. God bless her.

Everyday when I came home work the first thing I wanted to do was to get comfy and read Lornas book.I had a hard time putting the book down. I have always loved spiritual things and experiences. I have always strived to feel closer to my God and to feel of his love and acceptance. Learning that the Lord has given us each the loving gift of a Guardian Angel makes my heart full of joy and hope and thankfulness. I am so appreciative that the Angels inspired Lorna to write these inspirational books. I have read Angels in My Hair and Stairway to Heaven. I just received my copy of Angels at my Fingertips and can't wait to read it. Thank you Lorna Byrne and Angels!

This book is truly magical. Highly reccomended for those who are interested in learning about angels.Coming from a spiritual culture and a Muslim background, I can totally relate to Lorna’s stories and I truly believe in them. People with no religious backgrounds might be skeptical. I don’t blame them. Growing up I’ve read many stories in the Quran about angels and the roles they’ve played with the prophets. So it makes complete sense to me and just makes my faith stronger.I’ve read some reviews on how many of Lorna’s stories are a bit too hard to believe, for example: why would god make a young child suffer, or why would the angels allow her to experience pain at such a young age. But without darkness there’s no light. And going back to the stories in the Quran, it makes so much sense. Many of the prophets suffered and struggled and went through extremely difficult situations which only led them to personal and spiritual growth. They were all blessings in disguise. She needed the pain, she needed the fear, she needed the tears, in order for her to become the wise, strong and amazing woman that she is today.

There are more angels covered in this book than Message of Hope. Message of Hope should be read first . Do get this book for the brief section of How to communicate with your guardian angel. --is at the end of the book. She describes a poltergeist --what it looks like. And God arranges for her to meet Satan, though she is protected all the while. There is a simple Prayer that she used to Push Satan back. I wrote it down and keep it with me. I can remember it now--but if I ever have that encounter, I want it written down.Last Chapter in A Message of Hope from the Angels--starts out with YES!!!WE ALL WILL SEE AND SPEAK TO ANGELS--this iis in the future--Archangel Michael told this to Lorna Byrnes. Let it be sooner than later please.

Review

A Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers Selection"The Far Away Brothers is impeccably timed, intimately reported and beautifully expressed. Markham brings people and places to rumbling life; she has that rare ability to recreate elusive, subjective experiences—whether they’re scenes she never witnessed or her characters’ interior psychological states—without taking undue liberties. In many ways, her book is reminiscent of Adrian Nicole LeBlanc’s Random Family. It’s about teenagers who raise themselves."—Jennifer Senior, The New York Times“[This] beautifully written book…can be read as a supplement to the current news, a chronicle of the problems that Central Americans are fleeing and the horrors they suffer in flight. But it transcends the crisis. Markham’s deep, frank reporting is also useful in thinking ahead to the challenges of assimilation, for the struggling twins and many others like them…Her reporting is intimate and detailed, and her tone is a special pleasure. Trustworthy, calm, decent, it offers refuge from a world consumed by Twitter screeds and cable news demagogues. The Far Away Brothers is a generous book for an ungenerous age.” —Jason DeParle, The New York Review of Books"You should read The Far Away Brothers. We all should." —NPR“This is the sort of news that is the opposite of fake…Markham is our knowing, compassionate ally, our guide in sorting out, up close, how our new national immigration policy is playing out from a human perspective...An important book.”—The Minneapolis Star Tribune"An indelible picture...of one imperfect family driven apart and astray—not by inequality or lax enforcement, but by the humanitarian crisis of gang warfare."—Vulture“Painstakingly reported…A compassionate look at the lives of two young men and the family they left behind when they were seventeen years old…[This] book could not have come at a more relevant time.” —Mother Jones"Markham recreates each step of the story in rich detail...Powerful." —Pacific Standard"Deserves a place alongside the strongest in the genre....By the book’s end, it’s impossible to not be rooting for [the Flores brothers]. The book’s true victory, however, is in its insights into how the gang crisis in El Salvador and neighboring countries is impacting individual lives—and what lengths these individuals will go to, in chillingly descriptive detail, to persevere." —PopMatters"Lauren Markham understands the complexities of immigration to the United States...Compelling." —Sojourner"Excellent...a clear-eyed look at what many [immigrants] actually experience." —The Mercury News"Markham functions as an empathetic intermediary amid ordinary and extraordinary struggles. She is implicated in the boys’ search for a livable life, but her closeness to the situation does not impede her analysis....The Far Away Brothers...tell[s] a story of courage and failure, tenacity and loss, loyalty and fumbling steps into an unknown future." —The Christian Century“Timely and thought-provoking…Markham provides a sensitive and eye-opening take on what’s at stake for young immigrants with nowhere else to go.”—Publishers Weekly“Powerful…Focusing primarily on one family's struggle to survive in violence-riddled El Salvador by sending some of its members illegally to the U.S.,...[this] compellingly intimate narrative…keenly examines the plights of juveniles sent to America without adult supervision….One of the most searing books on illegal immigration since Sonia Nazario's Enrique's Journey.” —Kirkus [starred review]“A stark examination of youth migration and the extreme risks taken to access a better life....Markham questions the accessibility of the American dream while compassionately narrating Raúl and Ernesto’s experiences.” —Booklist"An affecting and personal look into the experiences of minor migrants." —Library Journal"This brilliantly reported book goes so deeply into the lives of its protagonists and is so beautifully, movingly written it has some of the pleasures of a novel—but all the force of bitter truth, the truth about the lives of unaccompanied minors in the USA, about poverty, the ricocheting wars here and there, and the caprices and brutalities of immigration policy. Anyone who wants to understand more deeply how we got here and why we need to keep going until we get someplace better should dive into this book." —Rebecca Solnit, author of The Mother of All Questions"Beautifully written, The Far Away Brothers examines the claustrophobic space between grinding poverty and brutal gang violence that drives so many children from El Salvador to make the dangerous journey North. Lauren Markham applies the eye of an artist to the dogged reporting of an investigative journalist. What a fine and timely book!" —Ted Koppel, author of Lights Out“In the midst of a contentious debate in which reality is too often bent or ruptured entirely, The Far Away Brothers is a necessary book. But it is so much more than just that. Told with elegant detail, profound compassion, and painful truth, you will come out of this story with so much knowledge and, more importantly, understanding—of immigrants and also of youth. Lauren Markham has written this book in a hard and noble way, depicting the Flores brothers not only as representatives of a vital issue, but as human beings: complicated, special, humorous, and flawed. You need to meet these young men.” —Jeff Hobbs, author of The Short and Tragic Life of Robert Peace"A twenty-first century odyssey, The Far Away Brothers will take readers to unimaginable places, mapped and unmapped, in heart and mind as well as on the earth’s surface. This is one of the finest accounts ever written of the plight of unaccompanied migrant children, full of insight and empathy, and as gripping a tale as one might hope to find in a masterful suspense novel. By making the Flores twins come alive, Lauren Markham puts flesh and bone on one of the most shadowy yet most pressing crises of our day and age." —Carlos Eire, author of Waiting for Snow in Havana and Learning to Die in Miami"Lauren Markham has written a modern day epic with The Far Away Brothers. It is a wonderfully unfolding, intimate portrait of family and the dangers people are still willing to risk for a simple chance at a better life. Markham's writing reads like the best of fiction out there, and yet... remember, this happened to real people. This is the sort of book you'll be thinking about at night." —Domingo Martinez, author of The Boy Kings of Texas“The most moving revelation of this book comes not from the geo-political lessons we learn, the path of the brothers through the desert, or the obstacles they face in U.S. courts—rather, it’s the insight into how that journey affects them, plaguing them with anxiety and guilt but also inspiring hope, ambition, and responsibility. From a lesser writer this would be a simple migration story, but thanks to Markham’s relentless reporting and care, it becomes a deeply relatable tale of human transformation—messy, stumbling, and bursting with optimism.”—Laura Tillman, author of The Long Shadow of Small Ghosts"Once you've read this remarkable reporting, 'immigration' will never be an abstract or airless debate for you again. It's hard to imagine a more timely or more valuable volume." —Bill McKibben, author of Radio Free Vermont

This offers excellent and accurate insight into why people immigrate from Central America, what it takes to make it to the US, and what life is like once here. By using the true story of twin brothers, the author conveys the human realities of undocumented immigration. At the same time, she portrays the twins very honestly, not as saints but as young people who are stronger than most in many ways, but with flaws and immaturities that are common in most young people. They may take different expressions than they would in American born youth because of different and very difficult circumstances. But as I read this book, I became less judgmental about their behaviors and choices. These were kids taking on more than I have ever had to take on.I used the word thorough in my title. The author uses data and facts very well to portray who immigrants are and to explain immigration laws, agencies, and processes. I am somewhat knowledgeable about those topics, and I was impressed. I am going to recommend the book to friends who want to learn more about the technical as well as the human aspects of immigration. She was fair and balanced in her treatment of this topic. The book is well written. It’s is a good story that could make a good movie or series. A good read that is a learning experience as well.

Markham's book seamlessly weaves together the story of one family while telling a much broader story about illegal immigration from Central America. I found myself immersed in the characters and story and had to remind myself multiple times that I was reading non-fiction. While heart-wrenching, it's also enjoyable and educational. Highly recommend!

For those of us who live in comfortable surroundings in well-ordered towns such as Berkeley, the day-to-day realities of life as experienced by undocumented migrants may be impossible to understand. Most of what we know comes from news reports and occasional exposés about the efforts of the Trump Administration to expel what Right-Wing politicians have insisted we call "illegal immigrants." In The Far Away Brothers, Berkeley journalist Lauren Markham brings the lived experience of two young Salvadoran migrants and their family under a spotlight. The picture she paints is nuanced and moving as well as sobering.Identical twins Ernesto and Raúl Flores were seventeen years of age when, separately, they crossed the Rio Grande into Texas with the help of coyotes. Though in so many ways their experience is unique, they also stand in for the tens of thousands of young Central Americans who flooded across our southern borders earlier in this decade—and for many of the millions of Salvadorans, Hondurans, and Guatemalans who now reside in the United States. Nearly all recent refugees from Central America were driven north by the gang violence and official corruption that are now endemic in the region. However, as Markham makes clear, economic motives also loomed large. Abject poverty conjures up visions of prosperity in "El Norte" among many Central Americans, as it does in many other people around the world. As I read about the often horrific circumstances that confronted the Flores brothers over the three-year span described in the book, I couldn't help but think about the sharply contrasting experience of my father's parents, who emigrated from Russia early in the 20th century. Their lives in the shtetl where they had lived, plagued by repeated pogroms, were at least as difficult as those of the Flores twins in El Salvador. Also, it was no easy feat for them to make their way through the vastness of the European continent and then across the Atlantic in steerage. But the welcome they received at Ellis Island, though decidedly chilly, was in no way comparable to the repeated violence and official hostility that met the Flores brothers both on their way and after their arrival. As the author makes clear, the massive migration of young Central Americans to the United States is, in a large sense, the consequence of US policy in the region throughout the 20th century, but especially in the 1980s. In El Salvador, Nicaragua, Honduras, and Guatemala alike, our government actively supported local efforts to stamp out local insurgents in the name of anti-Communism—murdering tens of thousands of peasants in the process. Large numbers of young men fled to the US to escape that violence. Many succumbed to the lure of crime and were imprisoned in California. There, in prison and on the streets of Los Angeles, the most violent gangs that victimize Central America today were formed (Mara Salvatrucha, or MS13, and Barrio 18). Today, these gangs are enormous, multinational criminal enterprises. They're responsible for an outsized body count in our cities and a major share of drug trafficking in the US today. In a real sense, then, we're paying the price of our government's intervention in Central America in the last century. And so are tens of thousands of migrants from the region. The Far Away Brothers is Lauren Markham's first book, but the Berkeley author and journalist has been writing fiction, essays, and journalism for several years. The book is based in part on her work at Oakland International High School since 2011, where the Flores brothers attended classes on and off, and more generally on her "thirteen years of experience working with, interviewing, and reporting alongside thousands of refugees and migrants like the Flores twins."After reading The Far Away Brothers it's difficult to see how today's "illegal immigrants" are in any substantive way different from the Irish, Chinese, Italians, and Jews who made their way into the US in the nineteenth and early twentieth century.

This is an important book written with passion and intelligence about the real life experience of a family trying to escape violence and poverty in El Salvador and move through even more violence and terror in route to the USA. It truly is a must read. Markham has a real gift for writing a riveting story woven with her researched facts of immigration from El Salvador to the USA. Her work challenges our assumptions and helps us understand what is really happening on our borders and who is gaining what. It is not an easy book to read but it is written with the heart and soul of what lies behind our current news broadcasts - on either side of the debate. Read it. Discuss it. Call her!

Riveting story that portrays one family being torn apart by violence and our inhumane U.S. immigration policies. It's also a beautifully told coming of age story for these brothers who have normal adolescent struggles on top of being unaccompanied minors. High recommended!

One of the best books of the year. Amazing combination of journalism and human story. Touching and informative. Can't wait for more from this author.

This was a great book.. Especially for our book group here in immigration rich California.. Amazingly for non fiction, (it had me in the edge of my seat hoping all would turn out well. She did not gloss over the difficulties with protagonist S either.. Very human assessment.. Does it turn out OK? Does it?

Markham describes the impact of El Salvador’s poverty and gang violence on the Flores family, in particular the Flores twin brothers, and the socioeconomic and legal factors shaping the lives of immigrants, particularly undocumented ones, in the U.S. For anyone interested in increasing their knowledge and understand on current migration patterns without the dehumanizations on those involved.

I haven't read it yet to my nieces and nephews, but I've read it myself and found it quite fun. I love the pics, so colorful and so many fun things to discover on each page. The story is cute and senseless, just like the Old Woman Who Swallowed a Fly, but that's what makes it fun! Also helps inspire kids' imagination as you ask them to try to come up with reasons why each item was swallowed. I can remember as a kid my brother and I would go through the Old Woman Who Swallowed a Fly and come up with different reasons while waiting for the bus, giggling as we got crazier and crazier.

I purchased this book, for my niece. I planned on making somewhat of a pre-Halloween day, and thought this would be a fun book to read to her, before we made mummy crafts. I don't think a book has ever been able to hold her attention long enough, to finish it, so when she wanted to read this book again and again, I was pleasantly surprised! The story isn't scary, but at the same time, does have a spooky theme. I like that the lines rhyme, and that while the story isn't complicated, it's still fun enough to not be boring. Very cute.

A delightful tail of a hungry mummy. The things he swallows, oh my.It's a great little story. Read it to a youngster in your family.

My 3 1/2 year old granddaughter got the bog kick out of this book. She even got the hang of the last couple of sentences. A cute take off of the old song "There was an Old Woman who Shallowed a Fly".

My 6-year-old boys really enjoyed reading this book. The illustrations are bright and the extra characters are doing funny things. Reading it out loud is sometimes awkward as it rhymes and then, it doesn't. I always prefer one or the other, not a mix. But the kids don't seem to mind. The ending, though, was just a bit unexpected as it ended without any more mention of what happened to all the things swallowed.

Nice rhyming words and funny illustrations. Felt like it was a little long for a grade schooler though. No throwing up at the end like the old-lady-swallowing-fly-story!

Collect these books for my Granddaughter. We just love reading them together. So funny and great graphics.

My kids love this book! They say it’s the best bedtime story there is! They have it memorized and request it, or more like demand it, to be read daily!

A lot of the controversial issues discussed in this book (e.g., see Chapter 2) could be eliminated by my conclusion (headline): sex with a robot, an inanimate object built for the purpose of engaging in sexual activity with a human being, is less than having sex with another human, and more than sex with a dildo or vibrator. Chapter 2 in particular concludes that you can have sex (as defined there with respect to human-human sex) with a robot only if the robot could say "no." This robot would not be marketable, we already have enough people who say "no" to sex with us. We want, particularly, someone who won't say no, someone designed to "enjoy" having sex, or, at least, someone who appears to enjoy it, or at the very least, performs it competently.

The promise of AI and robots seems to be growing more real every day. This collection of essays presents a compelling look at how we might think about a life with robots capable of having sex. Indeed it prompts many interesting questions about what exactly is sex, love and what does it mean to be a person. Great read.

An excellent collection of thoughtful and though-provoking essays. Each chapter explores a different aspect of, or issue surrounding, the development and deployment of robots designed for sex with humans. Highly recommended.

"These literate glimpses of rural America make good stand-alone chapter reads: raising chickens, meeting reticent New England neighbors, marveling at the mysterious USDA pamphlets or the Sears, Roebuck catalog, journeying to the Dartmouth library, etc...This volume will be of special regional and historical interest as well as of general interest in public libraries where anecdotal essays are popular." —Booklist "The Zuckmayers’ courage and strength is an inspiration to all who may be set in unfamiliar surroundings, even in their own country." —Publishers Weekly"The book offers readers an interesting historical perspective of Vermont during the war years, as well as an inspiring narrative on the indomitable human instinct to survive….The contemporary reader will come away feeling inspired by the Zuckmayers’ perseverance and with renewed gratitude for all of the amenities (like heat) which we now take for granted.”  — Jennifer Falvey, Vermont Standard"Part memoir, part diary, part fascinating account of rural life in 1940s Vermont...these are things that haven’t changed at all in the last century in Vermont...The sounds an old post-and-beam farmhouse makes when it gets cold, for instance, or the way the snowplow rattles the windowpanes at 4am...." —Emily Abroad Blog

About the Author

Alice Herdan-Zuckmayer (1901–1991) was born Alice Henriette Alberta Herdan-Harris von Valbonne und Belmont in Vienna shortly after her parents’ divorce. As a girl, she was a pupil of the radical education reformist Eugenie Schwarzwald and Alice met her first husband, the psychologist and future anti-Nazi leader Karl Frank, through Schwarzwald. Her marriage to Frank was short lived and Alice, now living in Berlin with their daughter Michaela, supported herself by acting and with secretarial work, though she hoped to become a doctor. She met the writer Carl Zuckmayer at a party of actors and artists, and the two married in 1925, the same year Zuckmayer was awarded the Kleist Prize for his play The Merry Vineyard. The next year she gave birth to a second daughter, Maria Winnetou. By 1933 Zuckmayer’s works had been banned and the family moved, first to Austria, and then, in 1938, to Switzerland. They emigrated to the United States with the help of the journalist Dorothy Thompson in 1939. After the success of The Farm in the Green Mountains, Herdan-Zuckmayer published two more memoirs, Das Kästchen (The Box), about her childhood, and Das Scheusal (The Monster), about a dog.Elisa Albert is the author of the novels After Birth and The Book of Dahlia; a short-story collection, How This Night is Different; and the editor of the anthology Freud’s Blind Spot. Her fiction and nonfiction have appeared in various publications, including The New York Times, Tin House, The Guardian, and on NPR. Ida H. Washington taught German literature for many years and, along with her husband, Larry Washington, helped found the German-language program at the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth. She is the author of Dorothy Canfield Fisher: A Biography and collaborated with her daughter Carol E. Washington on the translation of The Farm in the Green Mountains.

Interesting memories of wealthy artists kicked out of Germany pre WWII. The move from relative aristocracy to farm workers in the US.

Fascinating and informative.

An enjoyable and thought-provoking book about farming and animals from time before the nightmares of industrial farming. A really nice read.

I loved reading about all the things new farmers have to learn and what hard work it was (and I'm sure still is).

Fascinated about her relationship with animals. Have never read anything like this before. So thought provoking.

This is a quiet, thoughtful, and almost relaxing book to read. Comforting in contrast to the tumultuous times we are living in, and especially the tumultuous times it was written during. The book consists of almost instructional details on farming and subsistence living mixed well with some genuinely charming anecdotes and life philosophies. I found Alice Herndan-Zuckermayer’s voice personable and sophisticated with no trace of arrogance, overt self-awareness or an agenda. I should caveat that while I don’t believe the choice to discuss very little of world war II itself is an agenda of omission, some may feel it’s scarcity within these pages suspicious as it is indeed the reason for the Zuckmayer family’s life in Vermont to begin with. It’s tough to recommend this to just anybody though. At some level, if you have any interest in these people or this area of the world, or an interest in farming, you’ll probably enjoy this book a great deal. If you are coming for a more memoire of how we survived the war type story, I think you’ll be bored and should look elsewhere. Despite being well written, funny, and insightful, there are definitely long asides that didn’t interest me, and sections that decay almost into lists. This is a two star book with several strong five star sections. In fact, when I finished this and handed it to my wife to read, she was shocked to hear my final conclusion. Based on several of the amazing passages I had read aloud to her, she was expecting rave reviews. In truth, if one read only the chapters on the animals, the rats, and the library, and some select passages on Drude and the party line, one would assume this to easily be one of the finest books ever. But, like in life, and certainly in Alice’s life, there are long stretches where not a lot of interesting stuff happens, and perhaps its only fair to give it equal space. Finally though, I must give this strong three and a half star book that final half star for the last chapter and epilogue, as these are actually two versions of the last chapter. These final pages should be studied in every writing class. They are so dissimilar narratively in that one is written much earlier and is a fantasy of returning to the farm, and the other is the actuality of returning, written much later. Some of the passages however are nearly verbatim in both. The tone is subtly dissimilar, still masterfully capturing the melancholic awareness that you can never really go back, but from such dramatically different perspectives. Even more jarring in reading these final two endings is the retrospective awareness it gives you into how carefully constructed the entire narrative has been. There is throughout the book a feeling of reading the words over Alice’s shoulder as she writes, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. She is in fact a craftswoman of considerable skill, which makes the book that much more impressive upon contemplation.Afterword: skip the intro. It’s pugnacious and arrogant, and even worse, does a terrible job introducing the book. The tone is opposite that of the material and locks what could be viewed as a timeless text into a specific time and place. If you are a completionist, I recommend reading it after the book. It does reference some passages you may want to return to and is functional in that sense as an afterword.

This is a perfectly charming and delightful book, free of artifice, guile and pretense. The author's lover of the farm, the community, Vermont and Vermonters shines through on every page. As someone who loves my country, despite my distress at its recent choice of president, it is refreshing to encounter an European "urbane sophisticate", as described in the introduction, whose love for our country is unaffected, unabashed and in no way condescending. I cannot help but think of how her attitude contrasts with that of the expatriate, Donna Leon, who expresses nothing but sneering contempt for all things American.Once again, NYRB classics comes through with not only a wonderfully produced book, but with a great read as well.

For lovers of Shirley Jackson and history buffs, an unusual WWII memoir about farm life in Vermont for German refugees.
