Review
"What Can a Citizen Do? by Dave Eggers raises the urgent question of how to be engaged, compassionate, and empowered, and the cut-paper illustrations by Shawn Harris are so fun and so richly detailed that kids will make new discoveries on every read. It's an absolute delight." -Maile Meloy, New York Times bestselling author of Do Not Become Alarmed and The Apothecary"Eggers displays how citizens, even young ones (and even a bear!), can contribute to society. Harris' inclusive collages vibrantly depict a world of different types of citizens. This is also a book that adults will take something away from, especially in the midst of our current divisive politics." —Booklist"Eggers and Harris ask what citizenship - good citizenship - means to us all." —FlavorwirePublishers Weeky's Most Anticipated Children's Books of Fall 2018"This must-have book distills the fundamentals of citizenship into easy-to-digest concepts and emphasizes the importance of caring for others, accepting differences, and taking action to initiate positive change." -School Library Journal, starred review"This book is about more than being a good citizen; it's about being a good person. And that's why Eggers and Harris have created the exact book we all need on our kids' shelves right now." —Cool Mom Picks"Teaches young readers that being engaged and informed can turn anyone into an activist, no matter their age." —Time Magazine"Spark a mind with Dave Eggers's heartening and galvanizing storybook. (The answer to the title? A whole lot, in fact.)" —Martha Stewart Living"Obligatory reading for future informed citizens." —The New York Times"Invites active participation in society and politics, but it is also just a beautifully illustrated book. Illustrator Shawn Harris brings so much life and emotion and diversity to Egger's message, which tells children to care and to not be silent. I think we could all use these reminders>" —Romper

I bought this to read to my kindergarten class in preparation for our work around voting. The message of the book is a good one - take action. We want our students to be change makers, for sure. The introduction of the bear as a citizen left us shaking our heads and the children confused. It was a weird make-believe addition that ruined the book. I should have read the reviews before buying, and I would have passed on it. The illustrations are lovely, though, and the page quality is nice and thick...if only there wasn't that bear.
Great book and Shawn Harris rocks as an illustrator!
No message, idiotic consdescending prose ("A bear can be a citizen. Yes, a bear can be a citizen!" Stupid, stupid, stupid.Laura Nathanson, MD, Pediatrician
A citizen can write a letter...our character writes "No trumpets!" Ha ha...I see what you did there. Not really funny. Also we learn a bear can be a citizen....what does that even mean? I don't recommend this book at all. I didn't purchase it but read it at my library.
This book is essentially a civics primer for kids and is told in such a fun way! My grandson enjoyed reading it with me. It's eloquent but still engages kids without going over their heads.Highly recommended!
Through the simple text and delightful collage illustrations, this book offers up clear and concise descriptions of what a citizen can do . I especially love that it shows many diverse characters. Two thumbs up!
In What Can a Citizen Do?, Dave Eggers explains how even the youngest kids have an impact on their world. Advice and observations range from the practical: plant a tree, write a letter, right a wrong, to the philosophical: a citizen should "care and care," "a citizen cannot forget the world is more than you." The calls to action are illustrated by a narrative story depicting a diverse group of children coming together to build their own society in a tree house and reaching out to welcome a new kid in town. I was particularly taken by the boy in the tutu. In an era where civics education is sadly lacking, and our nation is increasingly divided, What Can a Citizen Do? comes at just the right time to encourage connection, community and good citizenship.
In rhyming text Eggers tells children it is not so much who we are but what we do that makes us citizens, and gives some examples of what good citizens do.The language in this is very broad so it can apply to many different situations. The blurb says stuff about picking up litter and pulling a weed, but that isn't in the book. The book talks more about making wrongs right, being caring and engaged, and helping others. I think you'll need to have a post-reading discussion with younger readers to see if they get the gist of the message. The broad language makes it good so it can be applied to a number of situations (and countries) but it also makes it a little vague and I think it may go over the heads of some kids. Not to say it isn't good. It is a great message, and having a post-reading conversation could make it even richer, helping young readers think through how they can be good citizens. The illustration style is quite unique. It is collage, but also cartoon-like...and I've never seen anything quite like it in a book (it looks more stop-motion animation in style). Highly recommended for elementary classes and families with young children to read and talk about how to be a good citizen in their contexts.
