The book flows extremely well and is never confusing when it goes back and forth.The granddaughter, Emma is reading her grandmother, Amelia' s diary trying to help her find Charlie. Amelia is having heart problems and being old she seems to have unfinished business that she wants to take care.We learn that Amelia was brought up in a loving family with her Father, Mother and brother. Her world was turned upside down when she was seventeen when Nazi soldiers forced them into a concentration camp. Amelia is separated from everyone and now she has to be strong, alone, in order to survive. On the inside she meets a Nazi soldier named Charlie who befriends her. He brings her extra food and makes sure she is strong enough to make it. Eventually, love blossoms between the two which is not okay. Will love be enough to make it through this horrible time?While we learn of the tragic events that happen to Amelia we also get to see a blooming love between Emma and Jackson Beck, Emelia' s cardiologist. This side of the story is more fun and flirty especially when Amelia gets involved. (When you read this book you will understand)Honestly, this was extremely sad but also a very beautiful book all at the same time. Seeing true love come and go and wondering about the what ifs in life make you realize that you need to actually live your life to the fullest. I enjoyed every minute of this book and applaud Shari on a job well done.I have no dislikes with this one. I was sucked in from the blurb.
Guys, I have been a immense Shari Ryan Fan like HUGE! Since I read her first novel, with each one I know I am going to get a unforgettable, tug on your heartstrings, change your perception romance read. She always takes this unflinching stance on tough issues. You can always count on Shari to give you the truth on a subject, no matter how much it may hurt, be uncomfortable or challenge ideas. Last Words is a stunning tribute to the survivors, many books have been published about this dark, horrific time but Shari writes this book from the depths of her soul. Last Words is told from Amelia and Emma's POV one anchored in the past telling a story that no one had a full understanding of and another POV from the granddaughter receiving her grandmother's story in modern times but needing the lessons her grandmother needed to pass on to someone in her life now.I was legit blubbering within the first two chapters, it begins such a beautifully told story. Shari's prose is just gorgeously put together, it's descriptive even during the rough parts, the times when you don't want to think about the cruelty that people are capable of but you know happened, but in those moments that deserve to have the beauty highlighted it's just done so well.The story gradually unfolds piece, by piece one small story at a time and it's like a origami crane some things may seem just like a singular memory but in the whole picture of the story everything has a purpose. This story is one I really believe you don't need to read a cliff's Notes review where I am going to tell you moment by moment what this story is, I believe it's one that if you love Indie Authors you need to read and experience because it is so important! It was a story that needed to be told right now and by this author because I don't think anyone else would have conjured a story quite like this one.
This book was something a little different than what I have been used to with Shari Ryan's books and I will admit I was a little hesitant to read it, not knowing what to expect and if it would be something I would enjoy. Having said that, I know that I will never do the review of this book justice. This book was something truly special, starting from the moment I picked it up. I knew early on that this book would be powerful, profound, and probably cause some tears to fall (and in this I was definitely not mistaken).There is immense beauty throughout this book that tells a story within a story. The circumstances surrouding Amelia's life and struggles are completely devastating and horrific, and within all of that, her heart survived, and she found everlasting love. Amelia's strength is commendable and inspirational. Despite the horrific historical events that are discussed throughout this book, two people were able to not only survive, but rise above. Despite the lack of humanity at the time, they were both selfless, wanting to protect others.I loved the way this story was told and how the information was brought to light throughout the book. Shari Ryan has seriously outdone herself with Last Words. It was beautiful watching Emma discover her grandmother's secret, while at the same time finding herself in a situation that would now allow her some of the love she so clearly needed and deserved. The relationship between Emma and her grandmother was something I don't think you see a lot of nowadays.Love can be challenging and trying and messy, but it is also beautiful and powerful and healing. This book is a true reminder that if you are lucky enough to be someone who finds a love so deep that it makes you whole, that you should never ever let go. Last Words is a brilliant, 5++++ star read!
