The first 1/3rd of the book was very helpful, the 2nd became incredibly long winded as it reiterated previous talking points from earlier chapters. the final 1/3rd didnt seem to include much valuable information at all. The book is certainly on point in its strongest areas but I feel like theres more filler than anything and you can probably find the same information in a better book. All you really need to do is read the first few chapters and you get the gist of the entire book

I love this book! Patrick Hanlon deeply understands that branding and marketing is first and foremost about truly connecting on a human level with the audience. He describes beautifully how the innate yearnings of human beings are to belong and to believe--we want to believe in something that has meaning to us. He also describes the roadmap to create a strong brand through 7 distinct primal codes. These principles are then exemplifies through detailed case studies that breakdown the process in a concrete way. This really helped me in understanding how to apply the 7 codes to my own brand.It was an absolute joy to read this book. I kept underlining and taking notes in the margins…the book is now mess with all my scribbles! Obviously, this is a testament of great content and writing. Thank you Mr. Hanlon for giving us this intelligent, genuine, and practical gift!

As a relatively new member of the marketing profession, I've been reading a lot of books to help me grasp marketing concepts and techniques. Of those, this has been the most unique. The main concept I took away from this particular tome is that more than one factor comes into play when you're establishing a brand image. Everything--from the logo to the buzz words--associates your product and brand in a consumer's mind.I really enjoyed reading about the various ways companies came into being, the way various entrepreneurs were interviewed. One story I found particularly fascinating was that of the founders of "Fast Company."Overall, this was a worthwhile read, but don't expect to come away with an outlined set of steps to follow to cause your brand to "pop." Rather, you'll find a set of guidelines that you can use toward creating your own primal brand.

I have spent quite a bit of time lately explaining to our clients the importance of story telling. Create a great story, and you will be able to create great zealots for your brand. That is the essence of this book. As the author states early on, "The creation story is the crucial first step in providing answers to why people should care about you, or your product or service."The book, like many other books on branding, reiterates a lot of common sense theories that cause the reader to say, "Well of course, that makes sense." That's okay! It is worth being reminded once in awhile why the basics work. That being said, this book does utilize current brand examples that help prove the theories correct. This is a book that I would recommend if you were looking for a good basic book on branding in theory and practice. It's worth the money.

It brings you to the ground level then works you up from there instead of throwing random useless facts, and ideas at you. My husband and I read this book when we were dating. We've been married for seven years. Now we gift it to anyone thinking about getting married. It poses trivial questions about daily life that you probably would not think of on your own. Sometimes the same questions are worded differently. This can be annoying or get you to approach the same subject from a different prospective. For some of my friends, this book allows one partner to discuss a sensitive area (spending habits, family) without the other person feeling attacked.We went through the questions during road trips as a way to pass time. Not only did we get to know each other better, it was a confrontational way to discuss issues for which we had strong feelings. Plus, when the eldest of four marries an only child, holiday spending and family priorities are important topics. Eventually we would have gotten to most of these topics on our own, but it helped create a stronger foundation for our marriage.One commenter wrote that this book doesn't ask philosophical questions. That's true. Hopefully, those types of things are discussed while you're enjoying a meal. This book will ask if it is okay to lend money to family or where to spend holidays. Topics that are better discussed before marriage than argued after the nuptials.

My fiancee and I are seperated by thousands of miles, due to his military career, I'm on the east coast and he's on the west coast, so this book has really been a blessing to us.Because of the physical distance, this book has given us a lot to talk about that we wouldn't have even thought of, due to the seperation. When we are together, we're too excited to have those in depth conversations.With the book though, it makes us feel closer together, and makes us talk about so many things we may have overlooked.The book is a good size front.Plus easy to slide in your purse so you can take it with you.Its well written.Quickly shipped.Both of us enjoy the book and would purchase it again.Definitely recommended

My best friend's wife is a non-religious couples therapist, and she has her clients go through this book together. I got this a Valentine's gift for my boyfriend and I to work through, as we were getting pretty serious and started thinking about getting married. This was the best thing that every happened to me, relationship-wise. As we started to read through the book, we both realized how much we didn't know about each other and how much we vastly differed on our responses to the questions presented in this book. Ultimately, we couldn't get through the chapter on money, and our lack of compromise led to our break-up. I don't think this book is meant to make you end your relationship with someone, but it does make you think. It helped me get a frame of reference about building these thoughts in a the start of relationship and working through them slowly. I would say I'm in a much healthier relationship now and this book helped me create a better foundation at how I should be approaching a relationship and communicating with my partner.

I was expecting better conversation ideas from this. I was really bummed out the questions in here were some of the following. Do we eat meals together? Who is responsible for shopping? Do we have a sense of our own style? Wasn’t a book where you close it and feel like you had a great conversation with your partner. My fiancé and I did go through it together(he’s a trooper) felt like we only found one good question.

I give this to every engaged couple I believe will benefit. Even if the reader thinks certain questions don't apply, the book encourages conversation and communication. All the right questions in one place. Our nephew and his girlfriend are in the process of reading every single question and both are finding it extremely helpful. Some couples I've given this to have rolled their eyes. It's their loss.

I disagree with previous writers who say the questions are childish, or for people with a short engagement. We had a long engagement, and found this book to be quite stimulating. I will agree that some of the questions you hopefully have talked about before becoming engaged, but others we hadn't thought of.Also, the book is supposed to spur discussion, contemplation, and conversation, and the questions are not supposed to elicit just at one sentence answer. Developing good communication is a must for any marriage, and this book is great at sparking discussion and debate. It is nice that it has questions like "What do you think a father is supposed to do?" as the answer to these can vary greatly from person to person. If you discuss these types of questions before even getting married, you will be able to have realistic expectations of your future spouse, knowing better his/her beliefs and expectations of you too. The point of this book is to find out if there are huge discrepancies in your backgrounds, morals and values, so that you can work through them before they become an issue, and destroy your relationship.The thing I liked best about this book, is that while reading it, in answering a question, we would often get into conversation about things that were related, but not necessarily asked in the book.I think this book is great for married couples, as well as engaged couples.

This is a good book to read if you're engaged or in a serious relationship considering engagement. It will help you (or you with your partner hopefully) figure out where you might have issues to resolve now or potentially in the future if you do decide to marry. I wish more people read books like this one before saying yes to the dress (or diamond).

This book should be required reading for anyone contemplating marriage. I wish I had had it some 45 years ago before I married. It would have made a huge difference in the learning curve in going from the single, carefree life to "wedded bliss." It is not all about the wedding, dress, gifts and party. It is about the life you live afterward.

Amelia is separated from everyone and now she has to be strong, alone, in order to survive. On the inside she meets a Nazi soldier named Charlie who befriends her. He brings her extra food and makes sure she is strong enough to make it. Eventually, love blossoms between the two which is not okay. Will love be enough to make it through this horrible time?While we learn of the tragic events that happen to Amelia we also get to see a blooming love between Emma and Jackson Beck, Emelia' s cardiologist. This side of the story is more fun and flirty especially when Amelia gets involved. (When you read this book you will understand)Honestly, this was extremely sad but also a very beautiful book all at the same time. Seeing true love come and go and wondering about the what ifs in life make you realize that you need to actually live your life to the fullest. I enjoyed every minute of this book and applaud Shari on a job well done.I have no dislikes with this one. I was sucked in from the blurb.

Since I read her first novel, with each one I know I am going to get a unforgettable, tug on your heartstrings, change your perception romance read. She always takes this unflinching stance on tough issues. You can always count on Shari to give you the truth on a subject, no matter how much it may hurt, be uncomfortable or challenge ideas. Last Words is a stunning tribute to the survivors, many books have been published about this dark, horrific time but Shari writes this book from the depths of her soul. Last Words is told from Amelia and Emma's POV one anchored in the past telling a story that no one had a full understanding of and another POV from the granddaughter receiving her grandmother's story in modern times but needing the lessons her grandmother needed to pass on to someone in her life now.I was legit blubbering within the first two chapters, it begins such a beautifully told story. Shari's prose is just gorgeously put together, it's descriptive even during the rough parts, the times when you don't want to think about the cruelty that people are capable of but you know happened, but in those moments that deserve to have the beauty highlighted it's just done so well.The story gradually unfolds piece, by piece one small story at a time and it's like a origami crane some things may seem just like a singular memory but in the whole picture of the story everything has a purpose. This story is one I really believe you don't need to read a cliff's Notes review where I am going to tell you moment by moment what this story is, I believe it's one that if you love Indie Authors you need to read and experience because it is so important! It was a story that needed to be told right now and by this author because I don't think anyone else would have conjured a story quite like this one.

This book was something a little different than what I have been used to with Shari Ryan's books and I will admit I was a little hesitant to read it, not knowing what to expect and if it would be something I would enjoy. Having said that, I know that I will never do the review of this book justice. This book was something truly special, starting from the moment I picked it up. I knew early on that this book would be powerful, profound, and probably cause some tears to fall (and in this I was definitely not mistaken).There is immense beauty throughout this book that tells a story within a story. The circumstances surrouding Amelia's life and struggles are completely devastating and horrific, and within all of that, her heart survived, and she found everlasting love. Amelia's strength is commendable and inspirational. Despite the horrific historical events that are discussed throughout this book, two people were able to not only survive, but rise above. I'm sure there will be some readers that wonder what the point of this book is. I, personally, love snarky humor so it was bound to be a win for me.Mille is 30 years old and lives alone in NYC. She separated with her boyfriend of 4 years over a year ago and has yet to be touched since. She works at a temp job she hates with people she loathes. She is a bit socially awkward, slovenly by nature, full of internal rage, and desperate for a change in life. That pretty much sums up the story.I highlighted so many passages in this book. Passages that delighted my cold black heart.Millie at work:"She seems to be showing me how to use a paper clip. She holds it in her hand demonstrating both the right and wrong way. Holy absurdity, little side on top, big side on bottom. I guess I did it wrong. I say "Oh okay, that makes sense.""It's a matter of style," she explains. "I totally get it," I say in low tones, soothing and reassuring, nodding, and to keep the indignant scream from leaving my lips, I imagine that she needs to poop all the time. "Millie at a party:"Sarah list facts about their mutual friend who now lives in LA. He's bored. She's boring. And I feel bored, and then feel annoyed, and I wonder why no one ever wants to talk to me. I'm a great conversationalist, it just takes me a minute to get into it. But once I get into it I really roll. I remember a lot of times I've been downright charming. Much to my surprise, because I'm SOOOO much older than Millie, I found this to be a hoot. Butler has put into Millie's mouth so many things many of us have thought (come one, admit it). Yes she is a disaffected millennial, which can be annoying, but she's also got a solid head on her shoulders and a nose for b.s. How many of us have had a boss like Karen or a co-worker like Elodie? I sure have. Millie is, at root, incredibly privileged and you might want to tell her to suck it up and grow up (I did once or twice) but you'll also find her sympathetic and best off all funny. This wasn’t the worst book I’ve ever read, but not the best either. I just felt like I wanted more from this book. The whole thing was rather one dimensional and lacking. Millie annoyed me more than entertaining me for sure. This just wasn’t my favorite book.

I mean....who can't relate to Millie?! At least at some point in our lives we have surely had a Millie moment....maybe? MAYBE NOT..but surely we have known a Millie. No real sense of direction...or rather, not sure how to read, see, follow her sense of direction. Dead end job. Snarky personality. Hardly any friends...or maybe none whatsoever. Relationship issues. Complaint City. Fed up with the world. Author Halle Butler drives us maddeningly nuts about Millie. Witty..but oh so apathetic, bitter, and aimless. If The New Me was a movie...I can totally see a young Ellen Paige playing her. It's like "Juno" but older and she never got preggers as a teen. You want to reach in that book and shake Millie..but then afterwards you totally want to hug her.A great read....Thanks to goodreads, author Halle Butler and to Penguin Books for my free copy via giveaway. I received. I read. I reviewed this book honestly and voluntarily.

I listened to the audiobook while at work and found myself laughing out loud in my cubicle several times. It is read by the author which I find to be a bonus. Her comedic delivery conveys the humor like no other reader can. Aside from the humor, Millie's coming to terms with the struggles of life and jobs is very real and relatable. The ending was perfect!

As such, I believe that the fruitfulness of our churches is dependent upon men who exert strong, humble, and God-centered leadership. Godly leadership is informed by at least four critical assumptions:It must be anchored to the Bible.It must be guided by unshakeable convictions.It must be based on God's blueprint - for he has an order for his church.It must be intensely spiritual.Church Elders by Jeramie Rinne another fine selection in the 9 Marks Series, edited by Mark Dever. Rinne begins with some basic presuppositions which are designed to guide prospective elders down a path that is both biblical and practical.The author outlines the qualifications for the office of elder as set forth in 1 Timothy 3, Titus 1, and 1 Peter 5. The discussion is elementary but is nonetheless very helpful. In addition, the terms for elder are surveyed (pastor, elder, overseer, and bishop). There can be no misunderstanding that the terms are synonymous, a feature that seems to be misunderstood by many people.Elders are called to shepherd the flock. Therefore, they are called to:Engage in relationships with the flock.Minister with the intent of growing the flock in Christian maturity.Readers should not be surprised that elders should participate in the teaching ministry of the local church. This fact is the key factor in distinguishing between men who are called to serve as elders as opposed to deacons. The elder must be "able to teach" (1 Tim. 3:2). Rinne makes it clear that this teaching ministry is not limited to the public preaching of God's Word. It may include biblical counseling, one-on-one discipleship, classroom instruction, or small group gatherings. The important take-away is that a qualified elder is able to teach God's Word - which means he also has a good handle on God's Word.Additionally, elders are called to protect the doctrinal sideboards of a church family: "He must play both doctrinal offense and defense, 'holding to the faithful message as taught, so that he will be able both to encourage with sound teaching and to refute those who contradict it" (Titus 1:9).Elders are to pay attention to the flock and hold God's people accountable to their faith commitment as well as their membership commitment. They are charged with watching over the straying sheep. The author notes five kinds of straying sheep which include sinning sheep, wandering sheep, limping sheep, fighting sheep, and biting sheep.Elders must be humble men. Rinne adds, "The simplest and most effective thing a church can do is to develop an intentional process for screening potential elders, and then be sure to select humble men." Men must serve in plurality. There is no hint of a lone ranger eldership in the New Testament. The author rightly notes that elders always serve as a team - in plurality.Church Elders by Jeramie Rinne is a terrific introduction to the subject of biblical eldership. An excellent primer on the essence of eldership in the local church.This is just the little book on eldership that the evangelical Church needs. For years, I have searched high and low for an accessible book that introduces biblical eldership which doesn’t devolve into either a technical treatise on ecclesiology nor a how-to manual that relies on debatable insights from the world of secular organizational theory. And here it finally is!Rinne successfully avoids secondary polity and pragmatic questions while staying strongly theological and practical on both what an elder is and does. Need proof? Check out these chapter titles which edify all by themselves: “Smell Like Sheep,” “Serve Up the Word,” “Track Down the Strays,” “Lead Without Lording,” “Shepherd Together,” “Model Maturity.”Church Elders does a good job of neither glorifying the position nor denigrating the work of an elder. Rinne writes as a vocational pastor but FOR avocational elders. He understands the perspective of a man for whom being an elder is lived out in addition to all of his other responsibilities including a family and a full-time job.Rinne packs a lot into these 122 short pages, but it feels like just the right amount. His illustrations are concise but revealing and helpful. His prose is conversational and carries the reader along but isn’t trite, sentimental, or sappy. If I could write a book on church elders, I would want it to be just like this one. I’ll be asking all of our elders to read it and include it in all future elder training.

This book is a light filled summary of the biblical 'job description' for elders in the church. The base assumption is that an elder is a pastor-teacher, that is, an under shepherd of Jesus. It assumes some elders are paid by the church, but most are not. It is directly applicable in a presbyterian or congregational setting. Leaders in other denominations would need to consider if they agree with the authors view, and how to apply it in their setting. Rinne has some lovely turns of phrase eg, 'smell like a sheep'. In a book this concise there was little space to consider the contentious issue of women elders. I would have liked the author to interact with the observation that Paul seems to be happy to work with women such as Chloe and Phoebe who were by the looks of things leading.The section on prayer was outstanding and a real challenge.

Excellent resource for both development, refinement, and becoming a part of an elder team. Complete with examples and plenty of scripture, Jeramie plainly prescribes the requirements for membership and then the job description in detail. I will be basing my newly created elder team on the template God has given to us and so graciously communicated cleary through Jeramie.

Completely biblical and tremendously readable. The typical American model of church leadership is badly broken. I pray that God uses this tiny book to right the wrongs of the professionalization of church leadership. We really need a revolution in this area.I truly believe that the CEO-and-board-of-directors model of church leadership is adversely impacting everything else in the life of our local churches. If we don't care about biblical direction in the way we structure the leadership of our churches, why should we expect the rest of our church membership to consider living their lives as though the Bible is relevant, much less authoritative?Well written and brief, but also timely and extremely important. I truly wish it were required reading for every "elder board" and every paid professional pastor.What if church leadership would begin to search the scriptures, rather than the business world, to see how church leadership should lead? If God has His way with church leadership, watch Him revive whole congregations, one after the next. But are we willing to give God the reins? Do we trust Him or don't we?
